  • The climax is almost erotic!

  • Great recording of a great peice. Happy memories of singing this in Bath Abbey

  • hey Austreneland, if u get into Brown, try St Stephens - it's on edge of Brown campus. High church, they do all the Tudor/early renaissance latin masses, 20th cent cathedral stuff, 4-part Anglican chant every week etc

  • it's so camp you can only sing it drunk, he must have been when it was written for a bit, sung it many times and fun but.....

  • We sang this in Providence RI a few times, S.Stephens under James Busby, and if I'm not mistaken, also at Grace Episcopal.

  • @ricub1 I'm applying to brown lol

  • great choir, great version. I've sang with a few of those chaps ;)

  • The Madeleine School Choir, I'm a student, is far better in my opinion. Type the school name in the search bar above and find the title, "The Madeleine Choir School Perform In Rome." They are singing Salve Regina on a tour to Italy.

  • I sang this at King's College RSCM in Wilkes-Barre, PA a few years ago. I adore this Magnificat. <3

  • @TravisBensonMusic do you know john brooks?

  • And Percy Weasley at 1'28

  • @gaililes I'm sure I already said that... :P

  • we just sang this at lincoln cathedral. its awsome.

  • Omg laughinglots who are you because it's me Samantha from RSCM St.Louis!

  • This is great stuff! Harry Potter at 0:58, also.

  • @mlevitt and Percy Weasley at 1:30 on the left there...

  • My fave magnificat by one of my fav choirs. We took this to every major location in Europe. I miss the choral music - ;' ( not much room for agnostosism in many churches though :P

  • I've been a longtime fan of this mag and just found out that I'll be singing this at the RSCM Nat'l Cathedral course at the end of the month. I was super excited that it was on the music list....until I tried to sing it and learned just how apt "Dyson in Death" is. >.< kudos to Kings for making it sound so effortless!

  • @jennywren413 We just sang this at RSCM St. Louis. So amazing. You will love it. :)

  • Dyson in D - fucking epic!

The nunc sounds like a hollywood film

  • wonderful organ.

love the 1st tenor part at the end

  • I think we did this once or twice in my time at Trinity Hall. Universally known as the Star Wars Mag.

  • @Schnorbs Also known as Dyson-with-death!

  • @1976howard Wow, he wrote all that music and had time to reinvent the hoover and hand-drier as well!..

  • We used to call this 'The Dyson in Death' when I was in the cathedral choir. It was an absolute MONSTER to perform and required some real vocal dexterity.

  • @mtheadedwally - which cathedral were you at? Sang this at my Oxford college and we called it exactly the same thing...

  • @Timbul53525253 I was at Portsmouth Cathedral.

  • @mtheadedwally Yes, it's an absolute bitch for the tenors as well....but it's worth it!

  • Is this available for download?

  • bravissimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  • brings back memories ...

but isn't that a SUPER amen?!

  • That is one Mother and Father of all A-Mens...

  • Hmmm. If you think thats something then you should hear howells-st john's service...

  • Yep. And the Amen for the Nunc is more developed, with a sustained F# to torture (and thrill) the tenors!

  • @CrystalPalace1990 Too true - am I the only person that thinks there is a desperate absence of Mr Howells from YouTube?

And agreed on St John's - to use a football analogy, surely that is Premier league to this Division Two..

Though this Amen does bring back some amazing memories.. Singing this at St Paul's Cathedral for one...

    Ahhhh.....

  • We sang this at my leaving Evensong in Canterbury Cathedral in 1989. Quite Maginificat indeed! So many memories...

  • i have heard

that Kings College Choir is very strict with the way the students sing.... a crack in one persons voise could mean he is not allowed to sing again in the choir.... is this true????

  • I heard Cleobury was mellowing with age.

  • Disappointing despite the beautiful treble sound.

I don't think much effort is made to follow Dyson's dynamic marks (the beginning is only mf marcato, not f legato for example) where are mp express;, poco a pôco crescendo, f with accents, (what an effeminate tenor high G "for be hold"), ff.

Then a very vukgar final organ chord...

    pfft

  • What would you know?

  • I sang in cathedral choirs as a boy, alto and baritone.

    I am an organist.

    I have directed choirs professionally.

    I have the score.

    What would you know?

  • which choirs have you directed?

  • why did you write "be hold" are you foreign

  • My keyboard is notoriously dyslexic!

  • now i just gave you a thumbs up...

    but.

i have to take you up on your mistake: it's behold. not be hold. :P

  • i sung this on my last day, of being head choirister in bath abbey choir. i love this piece of music

  • Is it hard to get into Kings College choir??

are they very strick about the notes you sing???

  • what do you mean, strick?

you sing the notes on the page... end of

  • I have sung at kings collee cambridge! it was awesome, we didnt sing this tho!

    Love it! Top Bb

  • I was head chorister in a choir from 1999-2002. I was lucky enough to hang onto the post for a while before the inevitable voice break. Good times.

Used to love singing this, a close 2nd to the Stanford Magnificat in B-Flat. Most beautiful church music was always in the anthems, 19th century Hymns, and the Magnificat + Nunc. I preferred evensong to the morning services.

  • which choir?

  • difficult piece

  • not really.... only for the organist...

  • I have the cd, and I sing than with the cd, this one is not so difficult

  • Aaah music banter...

  • oh ignore me, it's darke in f not dyson

  • i've just sung this today at evensong. i love it! but does anyone know if there is a video of dyson's service in f? i need to get some inspiration for the soprano solo

  • Whoa, whoa, what's with all the Decani loving? Cantoris do all the work! And I've been on Decani for 3 years and Cantoris for 3, so I'm not biased! I'm Head Chorister now and its my last year in my choir, gonna miss it!

  • Is there a best side in general?

Do the strongest voices get put in Cantoris, or is it well-balanced?

  • Generally it should be well balanced, but personally I think Cantoris do more work as they usually sing the harmony and Decani sing the tune when the sides split

  • I constantly got moved around from decani to cantoris.. haha, God I wish i was like 13 again.

    How gay am I?

  • sweetie you GO girl----be as gay as you want!

    This is fantastic singing!

    Martin

    The Queen of Sheba

  • hahahaha

  • @ilovegeorgebelding Know the feeling - I started on Cantoris, but was moved over to Decani, which I was very excited about as we were due to sing Parry's I Was Glad - but Cantoris was short, so I got shunted back over for the service.. Very disappointed, but at least we're versatile! lol

  • i wanna be a treble again!!

  • I was the headchorister of Decani back in the day...I hear ya

  • woot woot go decani!

  • Lol Decani rule i was headchoirister at Bangor Cathedral in North wales a few years ago...do miss the place =[

  • i want my balls back

  • LOVED the Amen!

  • One of the best Amens I've heard composed... Gives me chills every time we sing it in church choir.

  • @bassrob2 Any Amen that has Altos Flying high on a High D for the last note is OK by me! lol

  • @cdlaing

Agreed. He knew exactly what to do with EVERY voice part.

  • I love this too! its sucha joy to sing, i remember every time we were told we were singing it at St Pauls Cath my friends and i would all smile at each other! fantastic ending too!

  • Grade A-

  • stunning - that has to be the best "Amen" in the Anglican repertoire!

  • Ever sung "Lo, the Full Final Sacrifice" by Finzi?

  • yeah, ok, you win - the Finzi is damn good

  • We sang the Dyson when my college choir was Choir in Residence at the Yorkminster Cathedral for a week! Glorious!!!!!!!!

  • Love it! Its a good old scream at the end! I think the nunc is on here, click on more from DonRaphel and its under there. 5 Stars!

  • dyson was my favourite when i sang in st patricks cathedral, in dublin!

  • I love this! Used to sing it when I sang as a Chorister! Brings back memories!

  • I loved singing it too, especially the top B flat at the start. Where were you a Chorister? I was at Exeter Cathedral.

  • <3 this. You can't quite get the glory of it just by listening. Singing it is incredible. Nunc is cool too.

  • i totally agree!!!!

  • A good example of Victorian Cheese! Pity there isn't the Nunc too, as the gloria in that is sublime.

  • If you click on More from Donraphel, the nunc is in there :) yeah, the gloria *is* awesome. I've sung a Dyson mag and Nunc before, but not these... I can't remember which now...

  • I know - thanks. Don't think it was up initially.

Perhaps Dyson in F? That is also well-known.

I too remember the soaring top notes as a treble - for the last time this time last year...

  • The end of this piece is superb. All the voices soaring to that awesome climax - and then that roaring pedal-stop on the organ coming in on the last chord. Awesome :)

  • Wow this is so beautyful!!!

  • It is.

  • I'd be careful if I were you. Opus Arte has a YouTube presence.

  • YouTube has other presences as well. The police forces of the globe who have nothing better to do than divide society are constantly reviewing all web sites and all email users.
