When I saw it in '84 the band was about 25 pieces. They started out being directed by a little humped over old man & playing classical music. I checked my ticket stub thinking I was in the wrong place. After about 5 to 10 minutes the bass player hit one of those pure Motown licks. The little old man grabbed a trumpet & all h*** broke loose. 20 minutes later both bands came on stage, after 2 hours non stop they ended the show. They came back out when after 20 minutes the crowd was still cheering.
The show in 84 was at The Spartanburg,s.c., Memorial Auditorium, We had isle seats 10 rows backfrom the stage. Total seating is a bit more now but in 84 1,000. Great acoustics so the speakers weren't blairing it was just good and loud enough to party without distorion. Every note was clear. The encore lasted almost an hour, so it was basicly 15 mintes together, 45 temps, 15 together, 45 tops and a 30 finale with both. The encore was WELL un F****** real. They pretty much just sang on the fly.
@carguy1996 i bet that was great :D i so would of loved to born round that time so i could of see them live. but am 17 and am the only in my college who likes mowtown and proud to like it cz this sort of music coms the soul and heart from the peolpe who sing this type of songs. i think am so wish i round when they was :)
It's a real shame Motown didn't do this sooner.. Could you imagine this with a classic snakepit production? Motown's sound lost most of it's magic when they lost Holland/Dozier and went to California. The Tempts had the greatest bass and tenor, but the 4 Tops had the greatest soul lead in my opinion. Hard to chose a favorite
@lilajsky Original 5? You mean before David Ruffin joined? Sorry but it wasn't until Ruffin joined that the Temps became an awesome group. Even when he left later on, Dennis Edwards was a worthy replacement. I can't imagine anyone besides Dennis singing on "Shakey Ground" "Ball of Confusion" "Can't get next to you" "Cloud 9" and "Papa was a Rolling Stone" all of which are some of their best songs.
I once asked Hank Wiley an Exec. At Motown why they didn't make a video of this song. He said they were thinking of it. Shortly after that Hank died and it was never done. This is truly one of the groups best collabrative efforts. God bless Hank and all the Temps & Tops
We're family, you guys. There is something very special about you who appreciate this friendly competion, and the sound of the times, It doesn't matter how young or old you are....this music gets to you soul. Peace, Family.
I love Melvin's voice...man i wish i could have met him...i'm 16 years old and all i listen to is music from the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's...i love real music...
I made the video because I'm a huge fan of the groups. I put together videos at people's request, but this one is not authorized or endorsed by The Temptations or Four Tops. I'd hate to be slapped with a lawsuit by the guys that I love. Not for sale.
O u did it, this video needs to be on B.E.T., over and over again, so these ignorant groups out here today can see what real music sounds like, its GREAT---- from Bill Blow of Stratford,Ct
I must say this video was the greatest, I just discovered it yesterday July 11,08 and I can't stop watching it GGGGGreat Job on this Bill Blow from Stratford,Ct
This song is featured on the Tempts 1983 album Back To Basics. Berry Gordy co-wrote this song and it was produced by Willie Hutch. The album featued five songs written and produced by Norman Whitfield and the album's single Sail Away was Ron Tyson's debut on a single. It also featured Ali-Ollie Woodson on the track Stop The World Right Here I Wanna Get Off because Dennis was put out due to drinking and personal problems. This song should have been released as a single since both groups toured
I have this album and loving O you did a OUTSTANDING job on this video! Awesome! Its so great I will actually recommend people to log on to in during my radio show! Excellent Excellent!! Keep up the good work!
Me too. I brought it in 1989 and I was impressed with it. Motown should have released this as a single though since both groups started touring together at that time. That would have been a great theme song.
This song is from the Back 2 Basic album which was produced by Norman Whitfield & Willie Hutch. Sadly this album saw Dennis Edwards leave and Ollie Woodson arrive, In fact its the only album they both appear on. Ollie Woodson sung "Stop The World Right Here I want to get off" . Harvey Fuqua was also involved in the album. A true collectors item.
the temptations and the four tops the battle goes on they are both good but the temptations are always my favorite with five lead singers simply the best and they're bad real true legends of all time nuff said
