Watched this w/my dad years ago and we laughed our asses off. One scene not shown has Henry looking for available wealthy women. One rather busty one attempts to unleash her charms w/Henry screaming. What a Hoot!!!
some of the people that do not like this movie, expecially the first half, are the heirs and lottery winners, who squandered their money, i know two people personally that should be worth over a million, and they blame their parents for allowing them to spend the trust fund,,lol
Jack Richie's story is only 19 pages long but includes the murders. May's original Director's Cut was 180 minutes. Those sections of the Director Cut that survive in this 102 minute version are quite in keeping to the story. I suspect that we'll never see May's version, probably destroyed in the edit room. This is TOO BAD. Like the Venus de Milo we'll just have to content ourselves with what remains. Somewhere I'll bet the original screenplay exists though...
Oh. My. God. Funniest movie ever. Matthau has never been funnier--and that's really saying something. He is so hilariously snide and May--supremely talented writer-director and Mike Nichol's witty better half (professionally speaking)--is a wonder as the hapless, scattered but charming Henrietta. (Oh, and did I mention Jack Weston's riotous scene walking May up the aisle while desperately trying to talk her out of the marriage?) Priceless stuff. XD
I REMEMBER THIS! This had to be about the funniest thing I ever saw in my laugh and I remember going home and telling my mom and dad to see it. I thought WM was the most dispicable guy in the whole world and he was so good in this role that I didn't even like him after that. Thanks for posting such a gem. The rest of you all who have not seen this great film, get a hold of a copy (amazon) and you'll love it. Promise
I think the funniest scene, one of many, in this film is an early one in which Matthau's financial advisor, played brilliantly by William Redfield, repeatedly tries, without success, to explain to an uncomprehending Matthau that he is broke.
my mother and i have loved this movie for years and years. Its always been our #1 favorite. Thanks for this combo of scenes. "M. Davids extra heavy malaga wine with soda and limejuice"
Hi If anyone here has this movie on VHS, and would be willing to make me a copy and send it to me, I would transfer the copy on to DVD and send them the movie on DVD, it would be a quid pro quo please contact me if your interested
The scene you're thinking of has Henry fantasizing about carrying a body bag by a rope over his shoulder through the house and gets to a corner where a butler is standing there watching him. Why would they edit that out? Black humor is at the core of this film.
Thanks for posting. This is one of those movies that one could watch many times. I saw it several times years ago and bought the original short story from a used book store. The movie people took the short story and made a real gem of a movie.
There are so many terrific quotes from this film you would have to show the whole thing to get them in. "New Leaf" is one of the greatest unrecognized comedies of all time.
"In a land where every man is what he owns, he who owns very little is nobody very much"
one of the best movies ever

Could you post some of the scenes with William Redfield? He's my grandfather and I haven't seen this film in several years. He plays Beckett.

Elaine May in this flick was my first ever geek-girl crush, and Matthau's lines, and his delivery, are totally brilliant. Must. Own. This.

Great lines in this movie...
Henry Graham: The only difference between us is I am a man and you are a woman and we don't have to let that interfere if we are reasonably careful.
-----
Henry Graham: If you can't be immortal, why bother?
-----
Henry Graham: I have no mind as far as I can tell.

Unseemly?.......UNSEEMLY??!! Harold, after her behavior tonight....anything I do will be seemly.
This movie has a "gold mine" of Walter Matthau funny one-liners.
When he chastised the little girl at the wedding....and when he fired Henrietta's staff is classic stuff.
