  • Not a lot of knowledge for the traditional murder ballad here. Gen up people!

  • I love how the camera man pans over to PJ just as Cave says, "you better get down and suck mah dick" He introduces this song at another gig where he says "this is a cautionary tale" hehehehe "i'll crawl over 50 good pussies just to get to 1 fat boys asshole" hehehe cautionary bahahaha

  • Has got to be the darkest song ever written. I love it.

  • This has gotta be one of the angriest songs ever. Awesome

  • @Australian1stAndOnly, well he never said how old the "fat boys" asshole is. I just know that the dancing I saw wasn't as good as he seemed to think.

  • @davekeays BAHAHA you don't get it do you? Cave isn't saying in the song that HE'D (himself personaly) crawl over 50 good pussies just to get to 1 fat boys asshole,he's talking about Stagger Lee saying that. Fuck man can't you see/hear that?

  • @SouthernCross33 yeah I heard that. Didn't you read the sarcasm in my post? I guess I should have used a smiley. I don't remember that being in the orig lyrics so he wrote them. Most lyrics are, to some degree, a reflection of the person or their experiences.

  • @davekeays Sarcasm can get lost in print sometimes

  • @davekeays Oh yeah and the dancing bit, don't be a fuckwit,Cave has more credibility than Micheal i fuck children Jackson could've even bought, you are 1 stupid dropkick. Tell me how did you ever get onto this clip?

  • @SouthernCross33 I don't like MJ as a dancer, but he is the model of a good one. MChammer's dancing is almost as good as 2pac beats and stories or Canibus' words. If you are asking how I got to (onto) the thread for this clip; I was checking-out different interpretations of 'Stagger Lee' and didn't like this one.

  • @davekeays Are you trollin" or are you really as stupid as you seem ? I'm surprised someone hasn't doxed your silly ass.It would take me 5 minutes just from looking at your channel.

Tupac ? Ice Cube ? Michael Jackson ? Caucasian guilt much ? Ah Nick Cave actually plays instruments and writes songs that have some literary depth and meaning . Get a grip buddy.

  • @enolapayback did you ever read any of 2pac's poetry? Ice Cube is one of the biggest charity givers in that area. They are both survivors and have depth. True, some of their anti-white stuff gets to me and my Scots-Irish blood. Playing someone elses sound isn't any different than playing someone else's composition from a score? Mixing is a skill just like playing a classical instrument. I listened to rap when I learned it wasn't as bad as the stereotype. Now I'm onto country. Thats why I'm here.

  • @davekeays Yeah well sorry to jump down your throat, but the thing is Nick Cave is considered not only a great pop/rock artist but has also written highly acclaimed prose, screenplays and soundtracks.

He also enjoys a bit of the Grand Guignol every now and again, hence this track and a few others.LOL

Also you really should be more careful with the info, as Anonymous says " Teh Internets are Serious Business". : )

  • @enolapayback Thank you for the warning, but what info are you talking about? I actually take the threat of the Internet more serious than most. But Looking at my profile I don't see anything I'm not willing to reveal. What do you think shouldn't be there?

As far as Nick Cave, I don't know him so there is probably something out there that I don't see. I need to look closer one day.

  • @davekeays from being involved with Anon and the anti-$cientology thing I know how easy it is to dox someone with even the smallest scrap of personal info. People could just run a Google search on your name or basically anything and go to a free people search site and come up with your address, phone # and all kinds of stuff. .

Cave wrote the screenplay and soundtrack for "The Proposition" and the soundtrack for "Assassination of Jesse James" . There's 2 examples for you of his talent.

  • If you think using the term "motherfucker: is an attempt at shock rather than realism your truly a motherfucking idiot. Go back to enjoying your myopic view of music.

  • @56kagogo You guys are ruining a perfectly good word. When cuss words are used as an everyday adjective it loses it power to accent a message- "fuck" is going the same way "darn" did. Like the power kick, save it for when you need it and it will really help. If it is over done people will get used to it and learn to anticipate it or avoid it completely.

BTW: You realize that "fuck" is nowhere near as powerful as "God damn" which get into religious no-no's.

  • @davekeays

Guess what, when I cuss its because I'm genuinely pissed. I don't sit about over analyzing ever word that comes out of my mouth, nor do I fret about the evolution of language. Of course then again, I didn't directly experience the holocaust so such emotional intensity on my part is completely unjustified. Speaking of appearances, your just another obnoxious hipper than thou asshole who carefully tailors ever aspect of their personality in some vain attempt to stand above the herd.

  • He tried too hard to shock us. The "bad" words and sub-topics all looked forced and there just for their shock value. It ruined the emotional intensity he seemed to be going for. This way overworked song turned it into "so what ... yawn". Plus he's not the Michael Jackson he seems to think he is. His version doesn't even compare to Taj Mahal and Lloyd Price.

  • @davekeays You're a neanderthal, This Performance is Mother FUCKING epic. "the bad words ruined the emotional intensity"? that has to be one of the most FAG things i have ever heard. if you want emotional intensity with out "BAD WORDS" go watch lifetime tv for women..... Betch.

  • @vargas1700gmail, his show felt about as real as an inflatable woman. The cuss words were just part of the plastic image. Like trying to look smart by using l337 speak.

You want emotional tension then spend some time on 8th street LA (skid row), in the cancer ward in a children's hospital, or on the frontline in a war. Watching a guy jump around, pretending to have oral sex with the mic, and using words just for show is like watching a porn movie without any sex scenes.

  • @vargas1700gmail: This was the opposite of what I like about 2pac or IceCube. Their shows are real, unlike these 5 minutes that reminded me of a toddler pretending to have a tantrum just so he can get his parents attention.

  • Now THAT is a Live perfomance WHOO!!

I'd be stoked if i saw something like that live!

  • @theacidxpress, he did a lot of stupid things but he didn't stoke himself. He's like the Elton John of the 2k10s but forgot his rose colored glasses.

  • 4:03 P.J. Harvey standing there all Corpse Bride cute

  • Using the( {motherfucker} }word doesn't add anything to this song.. bullying... repulsive should be whipped with an "ugly" stick, no doubt....

  • Wow.

  • 2:59 PJ :D<3

  • @FrayJayo love !

  • CAUSE I'M A BAD MOTHERFUCKER, DON'T YOU KNOW?? AND I'LL CRAWL OVER FIFTY GOOD PUSSIES JUST TO GET TO ONE FAT BOY'S ASSHOLE!!

  • @Mzral Yeah, we all know u would, fatboy......ha...ha...ha and using the Motherfucker word doesn't make u BAD pussy face....

  • For what it's worth he had payments on his car..not the gun.

  • love the sceaming at the end, stagger sexy.

  • very good, why didnt he shoot the shop owner

  • "He had payments on that" - why the fuck didn't he just shoot the gun shop owner?

  • Bad version of this song! Boo!

  • The tradition continues with another great version of a great song. This is one BAD MOFO!!!!

  • Not the best version!

  • White Room was a cool show for allowing the filth that is this version of Stagger Lee to go out on British TV. Superb.

  • The beginning of modern dark music

  • @TheRD92 That made me giggle out loud. A+, would lol again.

  • i dont rly like this version or the greatful deads version this guy just seems to mother fuck this and mother fuck that not my cup of tea but other people like it so what ever just my oppinion

  • @milkjugs110290

This song and "Stagger Lee" by the Grateful Dead are two completely different songs, they just share the same name.

But yeah, Nick Cave's song is the darkest of all the Stagger Lee songs out there.

  • @milkjugs110290 Perhaps approach it as if you'd never heard another version of Stagger Lee. I'm sure you can't deny that this is powerful stuff, even if you don't like it.

  • Just totally fucking amazing!

  • what the fucks his looks got to do with anything you plebs hahaha

  • very nice song to play on bass!

  • ahhhhhhhhhhh fuck all of you!!!!!!!

  • He's so fuckin GOD DAMN SEXY.... My god, the way he does that little dance across the stage... And the way he curses. I love when people really spit out their curses.

  • Fuck Samuel L. Jackson.....no one does Stagger Lee like Nick Cave....PERIOD!

  • BLIXA!!!

  • "MR. MOTHERFUCKER YOU KNOW WHO I AM!?!?"

    priceless

  • Nick Cave is one of the most talented, but slept on artists ever

  • awesome..... open minded in the real beat sense.... love nick cave... and love the bass

  • FUCKing hell, Blixa knows to scream...

  • listen to his other stuff and get you hands out of your pants, the man is a genius!seen him three times now beleive me he will blow you away, but only if your cool enough!

  • This is Fuckin great and in my opinion one of the better versions to the Staggerlee story (although Lloyd Price's is my fave)

  • are you swimming with the dead fish below sealevel?

    wy crack?

i saw him on his last concert 5 days ago and he is a genius and no crackhead, do your homework before makle such an statement a.hole

  • What other versions of Stagger Lee are you talking about? Even the album version has the swearing, every bit of it, he added none for this version. Maybe you better go back to your Kidz Bop music if you find this offensive, because this is Nick Cave pal, obviously not something you are into...

  • You are aware there a lots of versions of stagger lee done by many artists, about the infamous murder. The way you wrote appears you are only aware of the Nick cave version.

  • Actually I am only aware of the Nick Cave version, what other artists are there? Would love to hear them.

But no, the other comment is more about Nick Cave, he needs to look more into Nick Cave to understand his style, and it's full of swearing, love me some Nick Cave.

  • stagger lee is like a traditontal song based around a murder, wiki it up, its been done by lots and lots of people

  • You need to calm down. Other people have different taste from you. Other people care less about gratuitous swearing.

I expect most of the people who like this song like it for almost exactly the same reasons you don't.

  • Much better versions from Mississippi John Hurt.. R.L.Burnside..Taj Mahal.. Samuel L. Jackson.. to name but a few

  • he really like emphasize his sware words

  • also, i wish i was blixa bargeld's microphone.

  • me toooooooooooooo

i can't understand why they get so good along wich each other, do you know?/

  • nope.

he's way out of her league.

    & a way better dancer !

  • PJ Harvey dancing backstage! hot!

  • NICK CAVE RULES!!

  • EVIL

  • good reinterpretation of an old song

  • polly likes it

  • Feel good song of the 20th century.

  • Totally amazing. Seen this live. It is sure scary bmf stuff

Hey, and I loved PJ Harvey's appearance.

  • love it!! I hope stagger kills all of um!!!!

  • Big Jesus traaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaash can!!

  • out of key?????? out of what key???? Stagg's got four bullets for you mofo!

  • @marxman00 Four bullets after, of course he makes you suck him off.

  • @marxman00

    hahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • then you must have a very limited music taste....

  • lets see you make as much of an impact os he does.....

  • He doesn't particularly have a vocal melody. It's more based on the lyrics than a catchy tune, and with lyrics like that you want to notice them. He can sing in tune but here he is not singing a tune he is crossing melody with recitation.

  • Nce audioi and great vid. footage. "Stagger Lee" ...- classic!

    Thank you

  • GO BLIXA!!

  • Hah, PJ Harvey at 2.58.

  • yeah nice :)

  • Has the original music video been removed from YouTube?? Where do I find it?!

  • great performance

  • anybody knows where can I find "song of joy" video?

  • one word. Testosterone

  • Nick sure knows how to own a stage

  • Oh my god the ending is amazing, Blixa is a legend!

  • Mister Motherfucker is a great way to address people you've never met before.

  • i'll try that xD

  • lol thats my favorite part of the song.

  • well, which one did you want to hear?

  • Yeah, care to elaborate?

    Oh you were finished?

    Well, allow me to retort.

  • Please do! It should be entertaining.

  • he was looking for the dead song you dumbass. its kind of like this song but it doesnt sound like shit

  • well just count the holes in the mother fuckers head

  • I listen to this song at least once a week. Holy Shit it's good.

For some reason the line, "they came to a bar called The Bucket of Blood" always reminds me of the movie From Dusk Til Dawn with Quentin Tarantino and George Clooney.

  • Ditto! I think the same thing every time. Interesting

  • Ha, yeah me too. awesome movie.

  • Love the pianos tone, and the video overall :D

  • Great song, great live version, and even a glimpse of the lovely polly jean around the 3min mark.

    top notch.

  • What year was this?

  • This show was popular about 1990 to 1992 so inbetween them im guessing.

  • it was 1996

  • GREAT SONG-CROATIA!!!!!

  • ahhh, nobody can make inhuman screeches like Blixa! I miss 'im!

  • fuck yes BLIXA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I loved this whole period when Nick Cave decided to let his rhythm section do the work. Great song.

  • ooooooooohhhhhhhh yyyyyyeeeeeeeaaaaaa

  • lovvvvveeeeeee ittttttttttttttttttttttttt!!!!!

  • I always love Nick's take on the legend of Stagger Lee. The violently homo-erotic angle makes him seem that much more terrifying than just the usual 'Baddest sonofabitch around' legend.

  • I don't get it!Suicide music-the vulture of pop.

  • great artst..

    great music..

    great band...

Cave and the bad seeds realy have their own style and they kept it all the years through!!

  • Anyone know when and where this performance was?

  • Emit :

Its off hte UK show The White Room so presumably at the studio in London.

WR is no longer on which is a shame it was a good one. There is always Later withe Jools though which might be the best UK muso show ever.

  • Murder Ballads came out in '96. I would guess that this performance was in support of its release. Obviously from 'White Room'.

  • haha I like the description "one of their darker tunes" as opposed to all those happy, light uplifting songs that the bad seeds do.

"I'd say it's quite light and undramatic" hahah

  • LOL. Yeah, lot's of "shiny happy people" Cave songs to compare it too!

  • @ih8flys You are officially amazing for using that quote

  • the end could quite possibly be the greatest thing EVER

  • Where is the music video! Argghghgfhfjl. This is still pretty damn amazing.

  • Oh My good, he`s amazing

  • One of the best interpretations of a great traditional story

  • Blixa screaming at the end....... God. The whole song is a masterpiece.

  • ... also available for Bar Mitzvah's and Birthday parties ...

  • no pun intended...

  • PJ at 2.58
