I notice you didnt mention the 1980 US film Maniac. It's a very good film. Good acting and cinematography for its time. It's also extremely violent and seems like it wouldve been a good candidate for a "video nasty". I really enjoyed this lengthy but enlightening video.
@troelsjensjensen Pretty sad that you are sat at a computer watching videos of people sat in their house, and think you have some kind of high horse to sit on when it comes to watching actual films. Get a hobby yourself!
@TheDailyCranks last time I checked, videos have to be entirely your own content. Many of mine have bits of music and video clips in them, so think I would fall foul of their rules.
@SuperBully1983 not all of them are available on DVD yet, there's still a few (such as Delirium) which you can only pick up on bootleg DVDrs taken from VHS sources.
@dantastic15 think its probably the other way round.
Metal and horror tend to attract people with dark outlooks on life, but in my experience, not all horror fans like metal, but most metal fans do like horror.
I've always wondered that. It's shame that horror conventions are always largely populated by long-hairs, beards and black t-shirts. I'm a horror obsessive myself, but I find any form of hard rock or metal music intensely silly.
@blaggermouth yup, all mine. nearly all horror, though theres a few action movies on there. Many are UK releases, but there's a lot of foreign imports on there I picked up from video fairs.
@81oakridgSTF I hear what you say, however, the BBFC were never the REAL bad guys, the main problem has always been the government.
Indeed, in many ways they BBFC are more liberal than the MPAA, however at least in the US there's you can release stuff unrated, whereas in the UK we have no such option.
I can't believe the BBFC prosecuted film makers for making unorthodox horror movies. That is an atrocity. How could they do that? May James Fernan rot in hell. And that goes for Mary Whitehouse too. Censorship sucks!
@UserOfTheUnknown it wasn't the BBFC, it was the government. there was no legal requirement for these films to be submitted to the BBFC for classification, so the director of public prosecutions tried to ban them using the obscene publications act.
Might I reccomend the documentary "The Definitive Guide to Video Nasties" which is currently available from Amazon for more insight into this.
@TURBODORK2 not sure about The Fly, however I do remember the TV version of Robocop which edited out the swearing ("FLY ME" instead of "f*** me", "airehead" instead of ***hole) and Clarence swerves around the melted Emilio instead of knocking him over!
You have some really cool titles, and I can tell you have good taste in music as well. I saw Velvet revolver shirt in another video and now metallica.
Yes DarkAngel182, there was an Interview with Michael Winner, saying that James Ferman was a failed TV Director himself, because he criticized Death Wish 2, saying the Rape scenes were 'about as low as a Film director can be, using rape scenes for controversy'. The video has been removed to my knowledge.
The only reason the BBFC wanted to give Gremlins a 'HIgher Certificate' is due to the scene where the Gremlins are in the bar picking their noses and shooting guns. The BBFC is a joke, always were, always will be.
@LeninStalinCrusader well I agree about them being a joke, particulary James Ferman's continued refusal to pass Exorcist and Texas Chainsaw Masscare on video, despite passing worse films in later years. However, the BBFC were never the real bad guys, most of their work was due to to pressure from the Govt, so whenever they were critisised they could show how strict they were in cutting films.
@knockoutking1000 I'm assuming you're on about playing US discs on UK systems yes? Most DVD players will convert the signal to PAL anyway, though a few do output a RAW NTSC signal. In either case, all modern TVs can display US NTSC signal in colour. The main thing to worry about is whether the player is multi-regional, so it can get round the regional encoding.
Brought Grim Reaper aka Anthropophagus and Toolbox Murders. Great movies, but so heavily cut. All the good shit is gone. Totally ruined the film. Gonna buy the better uncut versions from amazon or ebay.
Any idea how much the pre-cert video nasties go for nowadays? I have a copy of E.T.n. The Extra Terrestrial Nastie, which was originally called Night Fright, but was re-titled to cash in on E.T. and the video nasty boom. Universal objected to the overly similar box art, threatened to sue, and the video was withdrawn and re-released with different box art. What are people willing to pay for this sort of thing?(with original withdrawn artwork)
It was only available in the "Box of the Banned" 1 & 2 UK DVD sets from Anchor Bay UK. You might have a look round YouTube and see if its been posted there, failing that see if any horror fans will trade you a DVDr copy.
just some info on the film horrible that i brought from american amazon theres old film footage with resotered footage which they got from masters there are no extras on this dvd so i would recommend waiting to see if a dvd is going to come out with extras.
Very interesting vids. I pretty much have all these excepting Jess Franco's pantheon of rubbish. If I won the lottery I'd move to a villa near Cinecitta and get some Dardano Sarchetti scripts into production. No CGI, no brand new squeaky clean film prints - just good old movie craftsmenship. Moreover, directed by cultured hacks in their 50s - young/hip directors are so keen to show off their influences rather than blaze their own trail. Viva Fulci, Deodato et al.
'young/hip directors are so keen to show off their influences rather than blaze their own trail.' - That statement pretty much sums up modern horror. Terminal fandom. As Bill Hicks said "almost a jaw breaking fucking yawn"
It's an absolute disgrace that most of these films haven't been aired on UK TV. They form an important part of movie history and as the majority of them have now been released uncut they should be broadcast. Channel 4 should do a video nasty season, hosted by Mark Kermode or someone like that, instead of all the rubbish they put out (Big Brother).
That is unfortunate. Along with "Delirium", "Frozen Scream", "Human Experiments", "I Miss You Hugs and Kisses", "Nightmare Maker" and "The Werewolf and the Yeti, "Absurd" is one of the few rare video nasties still only released on VHS.
Werewolf and the Yeti is out on an obscure Spanish label, but its not the English language print. Frozen Scream is out on a German DVD from Red Edition.
i think i saw absurd for a time on Ebay, but its dissapeared now. any chance of me getting it anywhere else or shall i just wait till it pops up again?
I've been getting a lot of requests about that, and do intend to do one. However the problem I've got is its a VERY narrow bedroom so would have to do some serious re-arraging in order to fit the camera and stuff in, as I'd like to try and do a proper job of it.
However, I do fully intend to do a video at some point in the not too distant future.
Indeed, but if I mentioned all the differant titles these films have also been released as the video would be 10 times longer (just look up all the differant titles for "Cannibal Apocalypse").
I just bought the VHS copy of Absurd under the title Zombie 6: Monster Hunter and quite liked it myself. I noticed you have a cover scan of it on your site and would you happen to know if that version is uncut?
Otherwise a great review and look forward to watching the rest as well.
A very good collection of classic and banned horror films. I'm interested to know where you searched to collect some of these films. Granted you mentioned that most where possibly obtained from the states, but what do you recommend to start searching for them.
Also, where did you purchase the metal case collection of the 'The Beyond". I believe they are quite rare to obtained and very expensive as well.
In the early 80`s British sitcom THE YOUNG ONES Mike and Vivian were trying to get their new vcr to work so they can watch a video nasty. Funny stuff.
meeting a member of the BBFC for a short interview for this college documentary im doing, its gonna be about me finding out if horror films create violent people. anything you want me to ask the BBFC for you?
Nice collection pal. The audio track on Twitch of the Death Nerve makes me angry!! I don't think I've ever had to use the volume controls so extensively while watching a movie :)
I am writing a horror script and just watched Anthropophagus. I am really pissed of. I was writing a scene with a fetus being eaten and it is so similar that I can't use it. FUUUUUCCKK!!!
Its alright. Just be subtle about how you use it so it isn't that glaring. Those hacks Tarintino and Eli Roth blatanly rip stuff all the time and call it a "tribute."
Nah man I'll figure something out without resorting to 'tributes' cause that's really starting to piss me off. Plus how do you be subtle about eating a feotus.LOL.
HA ha! I suppose you are right. I think you can use it because it isn't as obviouse as that moron Roth deciding to use the cabin from "Evil Dead" and the music from "Last House on the Left." I just want to scream "You like those movies! We get it! So make your OWN!"
You get the Anorak Oscar 2008 for exceptional endeavour in the pursuit of pointless passion ! Bring back the good old days when you had to hunt these down on fourth generation dupes from dodgy dealers at the back of exchange and mart.Ebay and a more liberal UK censor have shot our fox. Great tribute though to the genre.oooh Scala and spangles ... them were days.. Well done you're a poor man's Barry Norman.
Oh, and I agree with you about the the "good old days". Collecting was a lot more fun before we had DVD, internet shopping and liberal censors. It might be a damnsite easier now, but its sure not as fun.
No, the ORIGINAL nasties were the unclassified horror films that appeared on video in the early 80's. The films I'm on about are the ones that made it onto the Governments official hitlist back then.
Just because the press describes a film it doesn't like as a "Video Nasty" doesn't mean it was part of the original furore of the early 80's. Childs Play 3 didn't come out until the early 90's, well after the introduction of the VRA, and was classified 15. by the BBFC, so was never part of that.
I notice you didnt mention the 1980 US film Maniac. It's a very good film. Good acting and cinematography for its time. It's also extremely violent and seems like it wouldve been a good candidate for a "video nasty". I really enjoyed this lengthy but enlightening video.

Nice collection pal. The audio track on Twitch of the Death Nerve makes me angry!! I don't think I've ever had to use the volume controls so extensively while watching a movie :)

Did The Beyond - Limited Edition was included with English Subtitles? If not, I want to know.

guys selling a copy of absurd on ebay rare dvd but its in german laungage only.
w879w87w 3 years ago
I've got the standard UK version of The Beyond (if you were referring to the Vipco release).
The quality is actually pretty good - as good as you'd expect from a low budget 80s gore movie really..
But like you said, no extras (with the exception of a few trailers).
One of these days I might do a video on my zombie movie collection.. when it's grown a bit more (only got 22 at the moment..)

thats what i brought the vipco release its not a bad copy some good extras.
w879w87w 3 years ago
hmmm could it be that night of the demon might be uncut here in the uk it was shown on zone horror uncut this film was a video nasty.
w879w87w 3 years ago
There's no reason why it wouldn't pass uncut nowadays, its up to someone to re-submit it.
DarkAngel182 3 years ago
there must be a version of absurd somewhere out there.
w879w87w 3 years ago
I love the video nasties. Its a list of films, I'd probably never would have heard of otherwise, but must see!
Although, Anthropophagus does make the viewer suffer in order to get to the feutus eating scene.
radioblueheart 4 years ago
I am writing a horror script and just watched Anthropophagus. I am really pissed of. I was writing a scene with a fetus being eaten and it is so similar that I can't use it. FUUUUUCCKK!!!
MrWednesday101 4 years ago
Its alright. Just be subtle about how you use it so it isn't that glaring. Those hacks Tarintino and Eli Roth blatanly rip stuff all the time and call it a "tribute."
radioblueheart 4 years ago
Nah man I'll figure something out without resorting to 'tributes' cause that's really starting to piss me off. Plus how do you be subtle about eating a feotus.LOL.
MrWednesday101 4 years ago 2
HA ha! I suppose you are right. I think you can use it because it isn't as obviouse as that moron Roth deciding to use the cabin from "Evil Dead" and the music from "Last House on the Left." I just want to scream "You like those movies! We get it! So make your OWN!"
radioblueheart 4 years ago 2
Yeah, you're right, I'll go and do that and post it on youtube when I'm done.
Thanks man.
MrWednesday101 4 years ago 2
I would not get too upset as it is rare anyone has an original scene for horror films these days, good luck with the script.

Many thanks buddy.

I'll take that as a compliment!
DarkAngel182 4 years ago
well you should!, you have lots of passion in these videos (i can tell)

Where can I get the government video nasty list please.
MrWednesday101 4 years ago
Type "Video Nasties List" into google, there are numerous sites out there.
I have the complete list on my website, see the "About this video" section above right.
DarkAngel182 4 years ago
How do you compare those movies with movies like saw and hostel.
ironfan114 4 years ago
I'd say differant as opposed to better or worse. Difficult to compare because of the differance of age.
DarkAngel182 4 years ago
Awesome. A great lowdown on the banned list and exactly what I was looking for. Nice work. Also are you named after the band?

You get the Anorak Oscar 2008 for exceptional endeavour in the pursuit of pointless passion ! Bring back the good old days when you had to hunt these down on fourth generation dupes from dodgy dealers at the back of exchange and mart.Ebay and a more liberal UK censor have shot our fox. Great tribute though to the genre.oooh Scala and spangles ... them were days.. Well done you're a poor man's Barry Norman.
ibilly99 4 years ago
Thank you, I'll take that as a compliment!
Oh, and I agree with you about the the "good old days". Collecting was a lot more fun before we had DVD, internet shopping and liberal censors. It might be a damnsite easier now, but its sure not as fun.

i think child's play 3 was a late video nasty, it was caught in the middle 2 murder scandals, and was banned because of one them.
calaforniaman 4 years ago
No, the ORIGINAL nasties were the unclassified horror films that appeared on video in the early 80's. The films I'm on about are the ones that made it onto the Governments official hitlist back then.
Just because the press describes a film it doesn't like as a "Video Nasty" doesn't mean it was part of the original furore of the early 80's. Childs Play 3 didn't come out until the early 90's, well after the introduction of the VRA, and was classified 15. by the BBFC, so was never part of that.
