I think it's funny that Wes comments about jazz record companies were encouraging artists to do more pop recordings over doing serious jazz, then he gets up and plays "Wendy"! It's great though, because Wes can make any pop tune into some serious jazz in my opinion.
The interviewer is an arse, but you've got to understand the social climate during those times. Blacks were seen as inferior by these type of people. Hence he felt he had to totally dominate the 'interview'. I've seen many videos similar to this where great black musicians are put in such awkward situations in front of cameras to a totally white audience and a patronising interviewer.
Fuck the interviewer is coming off as disrespectful...he drags on and does not seize the opportunity here...and I would have asked Wes to play the tune...not told him!
You wouldn't have gotten alot out of him anyway even if the bald twerp shut up and let him speak. Ralph Gleason said he was uncomfortable in interviews and tended to keep his mouth shut.
Wes really seems like a lovely person but he best expresses himself through his wondrous command over the instrument and not even the interviewer can ruin that.
Glad someone finally posted this interview! It's about time Nelson Symonds gets a little more exposure...the kind words from Wes will no doubt help. Nelson is unfortunately still unknown.
Wes was far to humble. He appeared to really not know his talent. He mentioned " Nelson Symond " as someone that impressed him as an upcoming Guitar Player @ 3:18 . In particular his Fast Chord Changes. Well Wes, I have transcribed your entire " Chord Improvisation " of the tune " Stella By Starlight " In Real Time.(HD) As a Videos Reponse to this Awesome Rare Interview. Please approve this video response RareJazzVideos. It really puts to light the Humility of our Dear Wes Montgomery.
What's eerie is Wes' professional rise to stardom is but 9 years old at the time of this interview and of course he passes in a mere matter of months after this taping. Wes was like a comet that came out of nowhere blazin' a beautiful trail across the night sky and in a breath it's gone before you know it. Thanks for posting this rare interview with the man whose name defines the words jazz guitar. Wes Montgomery
Is this an INTERVIEW or a MONOLOGUE?

the first guitarist Wes montgomery notices is Joe Diorio (from Chicago he says)
I like it.
@mzkjr : conguero seems to be Candido Camero.
What is moving me in W.M. music IS NOT his technique, i don't mind about, but his deep personal soulful melody.
