Because they were forced to by the events. They expected revolution in Egypt and wanted to secure transition of power from Mubarak to Suleiman. They were somewhat prepared for a revolution and wanted to somehow manage it. But it certainly did not go according to their plans.
They had to get rid of Mubarak. If he stayed in power there was a risk of a coup done by lower level officers of Egyptian army. They preferred the generals who were their friends to stay in power.
