Thanks for the information! I'm car shopping now, and wondered why these cars are so inexpensive. This is a car dealerships special! Glad I read more about it after watching the video
Chevy Cobalt's are the worst car ever! I had a 2006 LT2 and had it for three years it was in the shop multiple times for the sunroof and other issues. One day while driving home from college on a two lane curvy mountain road the power steering went out in the middle of a steep curve. I found myself having to slam on my breaks from not colliding head on with a mountain luckily there was no one behind me. I got the car repaired and traded for a 08 Volvo S40 the next week best decision ever!
@wezlee1982 are you not strong enough to turn a tiny car without power steering? thats really really sad. I bet a computer does your job for you too. Remember when there was no power steering? probably not, but there was a time.
It sure would be nice if chevy did a recall on the control arm bushings... All my friends that have/had a cobalt got their bushings replaced before 70k miles. Bad control arm bushings can make a car very unstable on the highway. GM knows about the plethora of suspension problems on these cars. Come on chevy, you're making a lot of your loyal customers very unhappy with these cars.
Thank you for this video. We called this morning. My son had his whole car shut down late Tues. night and had to veer off the road. Luckily he was not hurt but I was not aware before looking up all of this that there was a problem. I was shocked at how many stories are out there Hundreds!!!It Seems that the bottom line for GM of more important than anyone's safety.I will not let up until we get a resolution .
A few years ago I bought a Saturn Vue. It has been the typical American lemon car. Such a car could only be produced by people who take no pride in their work, have no idea how to engineer, have no clue when it comes to administration, use shabby parts, are unskilled/uneducated, don't practice quality control, needlessly rush production, have no loyalty to customers & show up to work on drugs. In other words, it was produced by typical American management & labor.
Thanks for this, I just got my power steering fixed on my 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt at 59,000 miles. The steering doesn't go out completely like implied by this video, but you do lose power steering assistance which can still be very dangerous, since it can go out at anytime, which may make it very difficult to compensate for if it happens in the middle of a turn.
my car is 2005, they did check but didnt found something wrong, afer a year , yesterday I was close to have an accident after the power stering light show up, a toll truck drive my car to a GM dealer and they didnt found anything againg and they dont want to chage the power stering becouse the lights of power stering is off now, it looks like they are waitting to me have an accident and die them they will change my power stering, this company really suck, I dont know what to do.
@MusicKrazy2011 It is unsafe, the power steering randomly goes out at anytime. It can catch you off guard and go out while you are turning, creating an unsafe situation.

Thanks for Posting the Video, I Have 2 Recalls on my 07 Cobalt, The Power Steering as mentioned in the Video and Also The Fuel Pump Module. My Car Stinks like gas when it shuts off, Inside and Out . Brought Mine in First thing this morning at the Dealer, and When i Asked How Much They said $0....
If you wanted your son to have a safe and reliable vehical, dont purchase a GM. Your at risk in any car or truck from GM, fact one, like it or not. And this will not be the only trouble with this mechanical rectum, trust me, I used to have their inferior products, that they will not stand behind, let alone, make them right.
I work for GM and just for your information you do not!!!! loose steering only power assist also you can cut veh off and restart the power assist will returne. I'm not saying they should not have an open campaign on this problem just the hype is way too much futher more GM does not make the steering assist motors a little German co you may have herd of makes them Bosch would be the name and I think they did address the problem quickly and did not hesitate. Proud to work for them. I'm just say n
@wheelnredneck HEY I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ON A 2010 CHEVY MALIBU I HAVE HAD A PARTIAL STEERING LOSS AND A COMPLETE STEERING LOSS HERES A VIDEO LINK TO A PARTIAL STEERING LOSS U CAN TURN THE WHEEL BUT VERY DIFFICULT TO. AND TO ANYONE THAT SAY U DONT HAVE A COMPLETE STEERING LOSS WELL THEY R WRONG BECAUSE I HAD ON ON MY 2010 CHEVY MALIBU AND MY WIFE,7 MONTH OLD BABY AND I NEARLY CAUSE A WRECK DUE TO A TOTAL STEERING LOSS
I brought my daughter's '09 Cobalt into the Chev dealer today to fix the intermittant loss of power steering problem. The car would still steer but with great effort required to turn the steering wheel. Polar Chev did the repair while I waited. Took less than one hour to replace the power assist electric motor.
Chevy did a recall on the power steering . So I took my cobalt in and when I got it back I noticed it handled better, lol...guess I was use to the bad steering.
The Chevy Cruze is far superior to the Cobalt. The new GM seems to have their act together far more than the old, bankrupt one that designed the Cobalt.
@Lazascar that's plain ignorance. the cruz is meant for gas mileage and parents the cobalt is for teenagers and young adults jackass. that's why the ss cobalt is fast and the turbo cruz is slow as piss. try not to talk out of your ass.
@srtallday At least I can post on YouTube without being rude and offensive. You should be ashamed of yourself. You can disagree without being disagreeable. I wonder if your bluster would be so vigorous if you had to post your real name instead of hiding behind an alias. Your name-calling was completely uncalled for.
i got more problam then a nuff with my 2006 chevy cobalt the anti theft light came on and now the dang thing wont start so this car is very shitty if you ask me.
@David12King listen buster it does not matter about the price it matters about the reliability and guess what japanese cars are top reliable cars in the car industry general motors is always losing money and cutting jobs because their cars are not selling well enough. Stop talking about the price!
@asgher786 dont be an ignorant reatard please. i know domesitcs aren't "as good as imports" but they almost always aren't imports. acura and honda have factorys in the states and those are the cars we get. built by americansin america. just as domestic as a chevy. and import car makers don't have to cut jobs because THEY'RE GOVERNMENT SUPPORTED shit for brains. unlike our free-market dealers honda and etc don't have to worry about bankruptsy. don't talk if you don't know anyithng.
@David12King cutting jobs and the amount of sales is related to reliability bitch, consumers noticed that gm's cars are not reliable thats why their not making good business therefore gm cant pay their employees so that why cutting jobs. You dont even watch the news you little fucker.
@David12King Too bad GM, laid off more then 30,000 employees in 2010, and most Toyota's are made more in the US, then GMs junk. Which also supports American workers and thousands of American part suppliers.
@David12King That's just for their employees to assemble the vehicles. Think of all the American part suppliers Toyota is using...with a higher US part content rating then any of the big 3
@David12King if you have never had power steering go out on you...i can assure you its like you turning a wheel without assist....hence you are trying to turn a 3,000 pound vehicle......you must be some super human eh?
@David12King yes...but those are only light weight cars like a ford festiva and old civic hatch's...we are talking about a cobalt that weighs around 3,000 lbs...not a festiva they weighs 2000lbs or less probably...either way no power steering is not a good thing on any vehicle regardless of weight and size
@David12King dumb question....i already stated its not even a good idea for lightweight cars....why would it be any good on older heavier cars?......and the older cars probably didn't have power steering because it wasn't available yet...otherwise i would think car companys would insist on using it...why wouldn't they?...who wants to pilot a tank every day?
@David12King well, how about this, you go disconnect the power steering on your present car then go take it out on the highway and do some dodging and weaving ...then get back to me on the results, eh?....then tell me if it's not a "big deal" or not..fair?
I have a 2004 Chevy Malibu and I have the exact problem with my vehicle. I have to disagree with some comments. I have a 6 year old and a 1 year old. Doing the speed limit at 55 around a bend, my power steering went and it sent me across the median (thank god there was no cars coming in the opposite direction. It is very dangerous and my vehicle should have been recalled years ago. I guess they are waiting for me and my children along with millions of others to die first before they recall it

I just got mine fixed. I got a letter in the mail that addressed this problem. They fixed it for free. It took 40 min. to get it fixed. The dealers are ready for you.
thats why new cars suck id rather drive an older heavy metal death trap where i know shits gonna work versus some fancy plastic toy with all that flash that breaks so easily
@classicrock4ev3r Buy Japanese they are made more in the US, then most of GMs junk and were always rated higher. Most of the big 3 uses Mexican junk parts and assembly.
@classicrock4ev3r Are you stupid, or just trying to sound like it?? If you knew anything about cars,or did some research, you would know newer cars are about ten times more reliable than "older heavy metal DEATH traps"IDIOT!!
man all you got to do is look at the resale value on a toyota and a chevy vehicle in the same class wid the same miles and you will see they simply dont stack up. And i aint spreading slander . Gm holds there dealerships to no kind of standards as far as the cars the can sell on there lots under the chevy name.In other words if a chevy dealer wants to take a car strips it of all the good parts and replace it with crap they can do it. Chevy doesnt regulate or track what they do.
I bought a 2007 chevy cobalt 2 weeks ago and have had the power steering worked on twice. Dont buy a gm they have made no kind of new commitment to custumer satisfaction like they claim. When they did this recall first off it didint fix the problem. second they tied all the wiring behind me steering column in knots when they did the recall. Buy a toyota or a honda at 100000 miles you will still have more life on the car then you will have if you buy a brand new gm car . SAD BUT TRUE
@tdubngvegas dont spread that shit. Every car has its problems. If people knew how to drive, losing power steering in a Cobalt or even having your Prius take off on you wouldn't be safety issues because one would know how to safely bring the car to a stop. Care to slander Japanese pickup trucks that tear the frame apart when you tow 3/4 their rated capacities?
You are totally wrong my colbolt locked up completely while on an s turn and this is after I had it repaired under recall. I was totally sideways in the road in the middle of the s turn no steering at all. So think before you judge and call someone names. My Grandaughter and I could have been killed. And Gm is doing nothing about it. They are trying to say it is not their responsibility
@MyMotherIsAwesome My daughter is right this minute sitting 0n the side of the highway! This same thing just happened to her! He's not a moron!!!
she called me crying hysterically because her car just made alot of noise and then she couldn't steer anymore. She almost hit another car, the median and then finally came to a stop facing traffic on a busy interstate! had I known about this i wouldn't have bought this car for her!
This has been a serious problem with the new Malibu's too, the power stering pump is not belt driven in these cars its a electric motor under the dash. The motors are way under power and burn up easily my wifes car is a 08 malibu and has had two done already.
people always think just because a car is "new"...its gonna be less problematic then an older car.....my 90 honda accord has been a great car at 250,000 miles........why buy new?...
This is one reason to never buy a Chevrolet. Buick or Cadillac are very fine cars and I've had cars from both brands with almost no problems at all, but Chevrolet cuts corners on their cars and as a result they don't last much longer than a Kia or Hyundai might. Their trucks, larger SUVs and the Corvette are all fine, but I'd avoid anything else with a Chevrolet badge.
I never buy imports but if I was buying a car in the tiny class it would be a Civic.
@jdo1288 its under recall i already had mine done mine was really bad since i had it before the recall went out all i had was power steering flash on the screen
just watching this video is making me mad, you have some valid points BUT the steering does not go out, the POWER steering will go out, anybody with arms thicker than a can of redbull will still be able to turn the wheel, and drive just fine, no vehicles used to have power steering, and people still drove them,
I just wanted to write and tell you thank you for posting this because my steering have been messin up on my car and i didnt know the problem im calln asap ......thanks alot
@jennyroseo wow thats so dumb because mine went out as well and i got in an accident! and the judge was like no your steering didnt go out because that only happens going under like 15 mph, and i lost my liscence, i knew it could go out over 15mph.
My boyfriend just replaced his power-steering motor on his 2006 Chevy cobalt...am so happy I took the time out to check out online action taking regarding this...he's never done any type of mechanic work in his life but it was so easy for him after reading up on it...he only had to change the motor and not the whole unit; as he was once told by his mechanic at a local Chevy dealer her in the Bahamas...we got it for less than $200 via international/shipping
so my power steering was fixed yesterday by gm. I obviously didnt have to pay for it. took about 2 hours. Works perfect now. Its so much fun to drive with power steering now. I have to get used to not having to wrestle with the steering wheel.
This is kind of smart, but over exaggerated. Yes the power steering goes out on chance, but you can still steer the car. It is a bit tougher to steer, but not really hard to steer unless your driving super slow 15 mph or less. If this happens in a case like that you brake, and will stop within a few feet(most likely will be in a parking lot). Drive smart. In the video he says you loose steering completely which is just untrue. Good video though, smart idea. Good video though.
@tywoerner from what have heard, this electric power steering doesn't give the possibility to the driver to turn the wheel manually because when the power steering shut off it locks the steering.
No you can still steer the car. I just pretty much gave my 06 cobalt away. The steering was going to cost over a grand to fix. I just bought another car... with a v8.
so im sepose to get my chev cobalt 2006 this week my dad got it and i didnt know about these problems, the car has just come off a lease and there getting it safed an stuff like all new cars do you think this is something that will be checked?
In reponse to some saying people are "mentally ill" about making a big deal about it. Some cars are VERY dangerous mine being one. My steering goes all COMPLETELY whether im going 15mph or 50mph and the only was to turn the wheel is to turn the car off and restart, and it just does it again. So get your fatcs straight before you criticize people.
Most of these comments must be written by people with no personal experience with the problem, or with very little experience as a driver. The problem of a complete loss of the power steering just isn't that big of a deal. All the driver would need to do is apply greater steering pressure, and drive to a dealership. The cobalt's a great little car, recall or not..
@ReallySantaClaus Exactly!!! People like honestly no ones life is a risk if your steering goes out!! The car is still movable, it might be a slight harder but nothing life threating.. Only if your mentally ill like this guy and his son making this video who think its sooooooo life threating....
@ReallySantaClaus Yeah, like I said, I had it happen, all it did was make steering a little harder at parking speeds. At highway speeds, steering felt fine. My local Chevy guys even replaced it for free, even though my car's warranty expired almost to years ago.
I had it happen. But all it does is make steering harder at low speeds. Got it fixed, and it turned out my steering system wasn't built by GM but by another company. It's because people panic. They feel the steering get harder and they panic. I still love my Cobalt, and will never get rid of it. 78,000+ miles later, 5 year old clutch, and still runs and drives as good as new!
@FoxGTR34Nismo1 your just not to smart was a gm mechanic for years. they will never fix there problems. you want a good car by a honda, this is the best advice you will ever get
@dirtymexican3 If you're going to try to make me feel bad, at least use proper English. You're instead of your, Their instead of there, too instead of to and for the love of God, punctuation please. Until you learn that, I will not listen to you, thank you. By the way, I also own a Saab, pre GM, and I will never own another Honda, not after my Civic's brand new engine blew up for no reason.
DOES anyone know what I should do since they claim my V number is not under recall? I have a 2007 cobalt lt coupe and I can not drive without the steering going out and the power steering light coming on. This happens not only when I go 15 and under, but also when Im on the freeway! It wont go away till I turn off car and restart...then it happens again! WHO WILL LISTEN?!!?!
a little late for me :-( i was in a wreck because of this about a month ago...if you have a Pontiac g5 (as well) take it to your dealership you guys should be getting a recall notice...unfortunately i got mine after the accident.
Be on the LOOKOUT Tho i own a 2006 Cobalt that is definatly covered by the recall and when i called GM today there Response was that NO it in fact wasnt Covered but that they would schedule me an appointment to have it "Looked at" which will Still cost ME money and then theres a chance that they still WILL NOT fix my steering!! im callig the NTSB now! Thanks to you for the VID!
The EXACT same thing happened to my 05 cobalt! Oh my gosh! I'm so glad you said something! I live in Cypress, Texas and I was just so upset when my car started power steering last October, I thought it would be too expensive to repair so I just dealt with it. Ahahahaha, I'm so glad for the recall!!!! woohoo!
@britstew213 When my son and I filmed the video our hope was to reach the people that were frustrated with GMs lack of response to its Cobalt customers. The Internet now gives us the power to find each other and work as a force together to solve problems.Companies can no longer ignore their customers, The force be with us . Will in The Woodlands
My neighbore had a black two door Cobalt, and it was the only car that leaked oil in the parking lot, and one of the newest. LOL, My 95 Honda Prelude dosen't leak like those new cars. LOL, thats the truth!
I'm not coming here to say I told you so or anything but you shouldn't have bought a Cobalt! It was listed in Consumer Reports least recommended section and the fit & finish in them is horrid. Almost like Dodge.
you deserve it for buying your son a piece of crap like a cobalt. Get him a real car before he kills him self from all the high school kids making fun of him.
@Rlnthndr He doesn't "deserve it" for buying his son a piece of "crap". He bought what he thought would be a good car for his son. At least GM knows exactly what's wrong with it so it can be fixed properly. Toyota can't quite say the same for their stuck gas pedals.
@auaiao9 a kid driving a peice of crap small car like that. At least get something that has an engine thats more powerful than my lawn tractor. slowbalt is for loosers. Get a real american car like a mustang, or a truck
@Rlnthndr by the way I have a 1996 Cavalier with 177,000 miles on it and believe it or not the car has been excellent. It had 12,000 miles on it when I bought it in '96 and it still has the original clutch!!. It has a few squeaks and rattles, with some of that being due to getting broadsided 4 years ago. I'm sure Cavaliers back then got low ratings in Consumer Reports but my old car has held up.
I have a 2006 Cobalt LS, the power steering problem happened to me yesterday. I bought mine used almost exactly a year ago, now it has 49k mi. and my warranty just expired. Vin #'s in the recall should not matter, if the power steering goes out they better take it back and fix it.
GM started the investigation back in 2007 for the steering issue. And yes Gm is recalling it but no further details yet, like the Vins that are included in the recall, till now its pending.
2006 Chevy Cobalt LS here. "Power Steering" message just appeared not 30 minutes ago while I was driving home, and the steering column made steering VERY difficult. Thank God enough people contacted to force GM to recall the cars for this problem! (Especially since my warranty expired 2K miles ago!!)
my power steering has gone out twice now, first time I had no idea about other drivers having this problem. Luckily second time I was just pulling out of my neighborhood and could pull in a driveway; turn the car off wait a few mins. then turn it back on. This does work, I know a temp. fix, but until they send out the recall notices (sometime in June) this will work.
my friends 06 ss sc did the same thing, his went out he hit a ditch, on of his axles broke then he rolled the car, didnt get hurt though but totaled the car, i think he said they gave it 65 points and 23 points is totaled
the steering in a cobalt isnt totally electronic, you can still turn the wheels with the engine off! the problem is people become so panicked when the steering becomes more difficult that they swerve and crash, or just freeze with fear. just like when the throttle sticks on a toyota nobody ever seems to think of shifting into neutral ad stopping, instead they freak out and try to jam the brake pedal down which is useless.
true and not true at the same time my shit fucked up on the high way on the off ramp and i got hit by a car on the side it took me and my girl to turn the wheel just not to wreck ... and i get stuck with the bill btw lol but all is good cuz im suing the shit out of gm 4 hopefully i put the bitch out 4 good or get a new car
Hi Im Will Mattern the guy in the video . Since my son and I posted this video 7months ago over 1100 people with the same problem have reported their problem to THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY SAFETY AND TRANSPORTATION ADMINISTRATION RESULTING IN A RECALL OF I.3 MILLION CARS and a savings to their owners of possibly 1.3 BILLION DOLLARS I love being part of the Brady Bunch!
I don't care how many cars GM, Ford, Chrysler recalled their cars. Toyota is facing a major cover-up. They were dishonest. and now it's biting them in the ass.
And where were the parts that caused the gas pedal problem for Toyota's made? Here, in the US. The Toyota's in Japan are fine, and the ones here that were built in Japan are fine, too.
Column-mounted electric power steering systems from JTEKT, a Toyota spin-off supplier which has done a brisk business in these fun-eliminating steering systems. the same coloum is used in all imports as well.
you were in a ditch because you dont know how to drive i think that is the problem. You can still drive the vehicle there is just reduced power assist a low speeds.
do anyone of you even know how a gm electric steering works in the cobalt. I know I do and you cannot believe the media they are blowing it apart. They dont even know how the electric steering works.
Thanks for the information! I'm car shopping now, and wondered why these cars are so inexpensive. This is a car dealerships special! Glad I read more about it after watching the video

The car would still steer but with great effort required to turn the steering wheel. Polar Chev did the repair while I waited. Took less than one hour to replace the power assist electric motor.

The Chevy Cruze is far superior to the Cobalt. The new GM seems to have their act together far more than the old, bankrupt one that designed the Cobalt.

@Lazascar that's plain ignorance. the cruz is meant for gas mileage and parents the cobalt is for teenagers and young adults jackass. that's why the ss cobalt is fast and the turbo cruz is slow as piss. try not to talk out of your ass.

man all you got to do is look at the resale value on a toyota and a chevy vehicle in the same class wid the same miles and you will see they simply dont stack up. And i aint spreading slander . Gm holds there dealerships to no kind of standards as far as the cars the can sell on there lots under the chevy name.In other words if a chevy dealer wants to take a car strips it of all the good parts and replace it with crap they can do it. Chevy doesnt regulate or track what they do.
tdubngvegas 1 year ago
I bought a 2007 chevy cobalt 2 weeks ago and have had the power steering worked on twice. Dont buy a gm they have made no kind of new commitment to custumer satisfaction like they claim. When they did this recall first off it didint fix the problem. second they tied all the wiring behind me steering column in knots when they did the recall. Buy a toyota or a honda at 100000 miles you will still have more life on the car then you will have if you buy a brand new gm car . SAD BUT TRUE
tdubngvegas 1 year ago
@tdubngvegas dont spread that shit. Every car has its problems. If people knew how to drive, losing power steering in a Cobalt or even having your Prius take off on you wouldn't be safety issues because one would know how to safely bring the car to a stop. Care to slander Japanese pickup trucks that tear the frame apart when you tow 3/4 their rated capacities?

This is one reason to never buy a Chevrolet. Buick or Cadillac are very fine cars and I've had cars from both brands with almost no problems at all, but Chevrolet cuts corners on their cars and as a result they don't last much longer than a Kia or Hyundai might. Their trucks, larger SUVs and the Corvette are all fine, but I'd avoid anything else with a Chevrolet badge.
I never buy imports but if I was buying a car in the tiny class it would be a Civic.

yeah my power steering just went out this week on our 2008 cobalt. We have about 30k miles on it right now.
zcxvasdfqwer1234 1 year ago
This is kind of smart, but over exaggerated. Yes the power steering goes out on chance, but you can still steer the car. It is a bit tougher to steer, but not really hard to steer unless your driving super slow 15 mph or less. If this happens in a case like that you brake, and will stop within a few feet(most likely will be in a parking lot). Drive smart. In the video he says you loose steering completely which is just untrue. Good video though, smart idea. Good video though.
tywoerner 1 year ago
@tywoerner from what have heard, this electric power steering doesn't give the possibility to the driver to turn the wheel manually because when the power steering shut off it locks the steering.

0purple0oranges0 1 year ago
In reponse to some saying people are "mentally ill" about making a big deal about it. Some cars are VERY dangerous mine being one. My steering goes all COMPLETELY whether im going 15mph or 50mph and the only was to turn the wheel is to turn the car off and restart, and it just does it again. So get your fatcs straight before you criticize people.
1AshleyAnne 1 year ago
Most of these comments must be written by people with no personal experience with the problem, or with very little experience as a driver. The problem of a complete loss of the power steering just isn't that big of a deal. All the driver would need to do is apply greater steering pressure, and drive to a dealership. The cobalt's a great little car, recall or not..
ReallySantaClaus 1 year ago
@ReallySantaClaus Exactly!!! People like honestly no ones life is a risk if your steering goes out!! The car is still movable, it might be a slight harder but nothing life threating.. Only if your mentally ill like this guy and his son making this video who think its sooooooo life threating....
YonkersBoi69 1 year ago
@ReallySantaClaus Yeah, like I said, I had it happen, all it did was make steering a little harder at parking speeds. At highway speeds, steering felt fine. My local Chevy guys even replaced it for free, even though my car's warranty expired almost to years ago.
FoxGTR34Nismo 1 year ago
I had it happen. But all it does is make steering harder at low speeds. Got it fixed, and it turned out my steering system wasn't built by GM but by another company. It's because people panic. They feel the steering get harder and they panic. I still love my Cobalt, and will never get rid of it. 78,000+ miles later, 5 year old clutch, and still runs and drives as good as new!

the steering in a cobalt isnt totally electronic, you can still turn the wheels with the engine off! the problem is people become so panicked when the steering becomes more difficult that they swerve and crash, or just freeze with fear. just like when the throttle sticks on a toyota nobody ever seems to think of shifting into neutral ad stopping, instead they freak out and try to jam the brake pedal down which is useless.

The GM power steering is sourced from a Toyota owned company.
The recalled GM Power Steering Pumps are made by JTEKT which was created by the merger of two companies: Koyo Seiko Co. and Toyoda Machine Works.
TMW is a part of Toyota
GM vehicles have caused 14 crashes and one injury out of 1,100 complaints.
That doesn't hold a candle to Toyota's 52 fatalities and 38 injuries
