this is realy inspiring , i have recnetly ruptured both my achillies and im contemplating on whether to go back to gymnastics or not . This has realy helped
I also hope Alyia Mustafina and Rebecca Bross get better for 2012 too. Gymnastics is such a dangerous sport that the greater difficulty elements come with greater risks! =S I just hope more athletes know when to say they need a break and need time to heal, otherwise it could be unfortunate =(
Rebecca Bross fractured her foot earlier this year, and she was making her comeback at the Visa Championships, and on her Day 2 vault she dislocated her knee cap. :( I really hope she can pull it together and be injury-free for London 2012!
Nastia liukin broke her ankle, had a year where she just sucked to be honest. But she kept going she didn't stop training. She went for the olympics and won the AA gold medal.
i hate it in life u love something and u loose it... but they didnt loose it. its like ppl who dont wanna baby get one, or u want a baby but u cant cuz the doctor says.................., u know?
I remember thinking how amazing it was for Jason Gatson to come back after tearing his ACL twice! I even mentioned that to him when I met him at the 2004 TJ Maxx tour, he's truly in an inspiration.
@conidi1 There was Memmel's shoulder injury after bars, but a lot of the girls became injured off-camera, Memmel's second injury that limited her to bars in 2008 wasn't long after the team left the plane and was thus off-camera.
I have broken my back, torn my ACL, had a hernia and now my frigging ankle is going on me. I have healed all of these but the ankle, but I will figure it out... I always do. Like the video because it inspires injured people. It does not feel good to think you can no longer do something you love and have put a great deal of work into.
@tmwalkerm Thanks. The ankle has an anterior impingement which interferes with drop stances and sweeps in Wushu. The injury is the result of a bad spain 4 years ago that did not heal properly. I must boot it and get cortisone injections and if that does not work, I need to shave down the tendon or get bone spurs debrided. When you get a sprain, use the RICE method and boot it. Do not ever take a chance. It is like having a permanent sprain.
@tmwalkerm Remember, stretch thoroughly, use good form, wear soft braces or protection on ankles, knees and problem spots. When you get a sprain, do not be tough, do not mess around.
I have been reassured by my doctor that athletes have full recoveries and continue to progress after this injury. The real battle is prevention of arthritis as this does not have a good prognosis.
@zigzigerblat absolutely, my cousin is a competitive gymnast in Alberta Canada, level 5 mens, and he's had a couple bad sprains and muscle tears. Luckily he has a great coach who makes sure he gets proper medical care when he is injured. I know too many athletes, not just in gymnastics, who try to ignore major injuries and suffer longlasting pain and permanent damage. Best of luck to you :).
@tmwalkerm If I was in Canada I would have access to healthcare. I cannot afford health insurance and have practiced Wushu for 10 years (very close to gymnastics) not to mention I was a little over weight while doing it.
@zigzigerblat we're definitely fortunate here, although the waiting lists for surgeries that aren't considered emergency are unbelievably long. Lots of Canadians are going to the US for treatments and are willing to pay the bucks for it. The Mayo clinic in MN sees a lot of us, especially for cancer surgeries and second opinions. My mom went to Costa Rica to have that liberation treatment for MS, out of her own pocket, and thankfully it worked well for her. Not everyone is that fortunate, sadly.
@tmwalkerm I would be happy to wait a year for my surgery. If I saved up it would take me 10 years to afford it. I had a hernia surgery and went a year until it became life threatening and then I was rated to get the surgery for free. The surgeon immediately sent it to collections in a month. People WITH insurance are dying here because they are turned down and even when it is covered they have to pay 20% of $100,000. I would take anything over this.
@tmwalkerm The good news that many people don't know, is that since the insurance companies depend on people being "rated" to get their surgeries after they are denied or cannot afford the 20%; I can just get rated without insurance to eventually get the surgery. Because it is not life threatening, I will need to go on disability or prove that I cannot work or something to get it.
One of the best montages that I see. You capture the essence of sport, the essence of the olimpic spirit: Surmount and just surmount yourself.Good job and really really congrats!!!!
that last guy is so amazing! i really like this montage. so many ppl just ike to show just the falls and the scary breaks. you point out that ppl heal and the dream isnt over yet. thank you for that!
do i realy have to say what is gay about this sport? I think it is gay for men to dress in tight condom suits then swagger around a pole or on a floor in front of thousands of people
You haven't seen still rings! Another key thing is that breakdancers STEAL moves from pommel horse and floor! I'm sure you'd swagger around a pole yourself in your own tight condom suit instead of doing somersaults that you're too scared to do, and they're called LEOTARDS.
I can't do half this stuff, but I don't call gymnastics a gay sport.
Gymnastics also includes Rhythmic gymnastics and trampolining (which was introduced to the Olympics in 2000). Rhythmics requires more coordination than American football, and flexibility above all else. Trampolining is like diving, but instead of 1 really cool move it's ten really cool moves.
American football isn't even an Olympic sport, football/fútbol/soccer funding is being cut in Brazil and is being funded into Gymnastics while Brazilians are coming in.
If it wasn't a sport, why has it been in the Olympic program since 1904 and hasn't been removed since? All properties of gymnastics are among the most popular sports in the Olympics above soccer. If you want to see a "sport" see curling.
Hockey is a great sport though, but gymnastics in general is better for body development even though it might not show at first as most women's gymnastics careers are short, but men's can go on for 1-2 decades (also see Jovtchev and Hamm on Ninja Warrior).
that is so mean!! The sport of gymnastics is not gay at all! It is a sport that tests strength, flexability, and mental toughness. I'd like to see a lot of other athletes try to do what these men and woman do everyday. And if this sport is so "gay" then why are you watching videos about it...?
