For example they closed down the Tempelhof-Airport, which was used by the american planes to bring in supplies during the Soviet blockade. They obviously still had a grudge against it, because it was a symbol of success for the West. The majority of people in West Berlin were against it, but in they were in favor of closing it in East Berlin.
Personally I'm from West Berlin, and the thing that I resent is that there are still a lot of east germans who want a soviet style socialism back. In some parts of East Berlin the Linkspartei, follow-up party of the former SED who ruled the GDR, has gotten 50-60% of the votes. Thanks to this developmentn we in West Berlin are now ruled by the party of the former GDR, and they try to revert a lot of things (the term 'Ossifizierung' was coined).
I think the biggest problem in the west is the demographic crisis anyway, and in the last 20 years a lot of young people have moved from the east to the west rapidly accelerating this process there while slowing it down in west germany. But now with few young people and mainly old people remaining the economy of east germany can't really catch up.
I think you're right, the borders shouldn't have been opened clompletely immediately in 1990, this was a mistake. It should have been a gradual process, so that maybe now after 20 years both parts would have been completely reunified again, so that the industry and economy in the east would have had time to adapt. The lower wages in the east would have been an incentive for corporations from west germany to invest, similar to the one country two systems approach in China.
I agree, but first of all you forgot the other 30 million who weren't killed by the nazis, and Germany was not built up by the USA, we rebuilt the country by ourselves. The USA only helped us to get back on the track again, and that's how germany became their second most reliable ally beside Britain. We don't hate the USA, we only hated Bush and his irresponsible wars, but in the end British and Germans share the same opinions about the USA.
did and have the germans payed enough for what they did in ww2 should the germans be proud of what there military did in ww2 like we are proud of the british empire and should the world give germany credit for moving the world on with new tecknolagy
Germany will stop paying reparations in 2020, but you won't find a single literate German who will ever be proud of what happened in the name of the german Wehrmacht, though there's no historical evidence for more than 20% of war criminals.
Credit for new technology? For example Germany has become world leader of solar and wind energy without any credit, but I can send you my bank account number, if you have some money left. :-)
@Lintflas how much a year is germany paying and to what countries and you should pay if not with more lives then with more money and whats wrong with been proud of a german army beating the french nearly beating the russians almost kick the british out of north africa and almost sinking all our ships and there is no doubt that germany killed atleated 30 million people in ww2 and germany murdered 6million jews and lots of other people in europe
@Lintflas also russia and japan should pay for what they did germany should get credit for its jets and rockets and its new type of warfare and we all know germany is 1 of the best if not the best country in the world at creating green technologys along with scotland hahaha as for germany having no money how much is your economy worth and who rebuild it after ww2 thats right usa and uk and france but for some reason germany hate usa i just cant see why and i am uk and i hate usa
@Lintflas also england 5-1 germany and what sports are germany good at thats right just 1 how many sports is uk good at thats right them all because uk invented them
The unification hasn't finished yet, but we're well on the way. Though the economic differences were not easy to solve, it's much more the wall inside the heads of the people, but this will fade away with the next generation. The prosperity didn't really decrease, but it's true, many east germans moved to the west because of the major business locations. Therefore many people go on vacation to the east because of it's landscapes and coasts.
best regards to UK, and may god shave the queen :-)
Germany isnt yet unified. East Germany is still missing and people here are getting angry bout it. But the Oder-Neiße border (named after the rivers) is our enemy. Revanchism seems to become quite popular. I myself come from East-Prussia and my family was expulsed after WW2 and i hope that some day we'll get Pomerania, Silesia, Posen, West- and East-Prussia back.
