  • Bravo!!!

  • Thank you.

  • tha's a very good version, you're brilliant !

All my encoureagements for the future :)

The piece just fits perfectly to the saxophone.

    Bye bye

  • thank you very much. Merci.

  • Good Phil !!!

  • Grazi!

  • Hey Phil, where are you looking at for schools? I have a couple suggestions for you if you're interested.

  • Sure, what da ya got? I like UofMN;UofIA;UofILL;Lawrence.

  • So have you decided where you're headed?

  • Hi. Yes, I will be attending Lawrence University in Wisconsin to study with Prof. Steven Jordheim. I was accepted into the studios of Eugene Rousseau, Kenneth Tse, Debra Richtmeyer and Matthew Sintchak but will be attending Lawrence for a number of reasons.

  • is sounds like your using breathing vibrato

you should realy learn jaw virbato once u get good it will sound better

  • hahahaha

it's funny since that kid kicks ass

...and has basically mastered the french style of sax...

...and he has a mark vi...

well at least I had a laugh

  • ok hes a great player, but only an idiot would add the fact that he has a Mark VI, its not the saxophone(sure it helps, I have a mark VI) but its the player.

  • Try playing on a crapy student sax...it makes a huge difference compared to a professional.

  • FalseShihzu has a point there.

  • It depends. I knew a guy who played lead alto in the 1 O'Clock Lab Band at North Texas and he made it through school playing on an intermediate Yamaha. I played a Bundy II alto my first 2 years of college. Meanwhile, I teach 6th graders who have brand new pro Selmers (a few Mark VI's in there too). Horns can help to a certain degree, but what kind of horn a person plays is hardly indicative of their skill level.

  • good discussion! Playing on a "bad" horn of any type of instrument can be a tough to over come. I have a student flute (Armstrong) which I could just not get to go. I just struggled with it. Then one day I played a friend's med/high end flute and it was like "wow!". My flute was a POS. Unfortunately I still have the same POS flute. It's true that a good horn won't substitue for the player, but it sure helps to have quality equipment.

  • Just an odd tidbit, on the album "Jazz at Massey Hall" Charlie Parker plays on a plastic Grafton sax, and it sounds amazing anyway.

  • This is a good discussion. I myself have a cheap, obviously made in China, sax, and I must say, for a crap saxophone, it plays very well. I picked it up for $200 total, and I've gotten it repaired about 4 times now, but the tone that comes out of it is amazing.

  • To be honest, I also play on a Mark VI alto, and before that I had a student yamaha. And switching to the Selmer opened up so many doors for me. The action is more comfortable, and I don't have to fight with getting it to sound like I want it to. And ultimately, some people may be curious, and he's probably proud of the horn! I'm certainly proud of mine!

  • i love cannonball.. selmer is a great student sax but if your looking to improve, go for the higher end saxes.. i know its expensive but you get what you pay for really

  • @beaner667 Yeah true that Bro... although... the only Selmer i'll end up getting would probably be the Selmer Mark VI that thing is soooo beast... iono if you agree but it's one sweet instrument.

  • nice vibrato on the sax

  • Thanks a lot.

  • hey, first off, you blew me away! Great job. I am also an alto sax player and i prefer classical and some kontemporary music too. what type of sax do u have? less than a week ago i bought a yanigisawa 902 broze edition. i like it a lot and i also use a lot of vibrato.

  • thanks for the nice comment. The Yani 902 is an excellent horn. I play a Mark 6 (1974 with hi F#key). I like classical saxphone and am not really into jazz, although I play in lead my high school jazz ensemble. I'm now looking at colleges for studying classical sax. Good luck with your new axe. Thanks again!

  • thanks too. and im just the same. im just a freshmen at my high school and right now im a little fish in a big pond. im trying to make my way to the top but anyway, keep up the great playing!

  • This is a secret so don't tell anyone:If you want to succeed, be the guy that practices the most.

  • i like it phil. just try to emphasize less vibrato and more straight played notes on the jazzier pieces, but great solos on all your posts!

  • Thanks for commenting. Yeah, I'm not much of a jazz player. I prefer classic saxophone so I use french vibrato. But thanks for commenting and I'll keep that in mind.

  • May I ask what grade you are in?

    Either way it was AMAZING!

  • Thanks for commenting. I was a junior in highschool when we did that concert. I played it with my highschool band.

  • Wow. Not even a senior. lol.

I think my band director is hinting for me to go with this by playing the solo part in wind ensemble next year.

    Cheers, Tabby

  • How have you recieved so many opportunities to play Solo pieces with your Ensemble? Its so great, I wish I could have played some of the things you have.

    -Josh

  • Thanks. The videos posted are from several different wind ensembles I play in.I won concerto competitions to perform the pieces. It was a really great experience because unlike playing a recital to a few people, the concertos I played with the wind ensembles were done in full theaters. Thanks for listening and commenting.

  • I really like your timbre ^^ great performance. May I ask which is your sax?

What do you recommend trainning to achieve that kind of sound? The ensemble was also pretty great.

  • Thanks for watching. I play a Selmer Mark 6. all i can say is to listen to recordings of your favorite saxophone artists. Don't try to copy their sound, but instead try to emulate their sound while keeping it unique and your own.

  • Hehe I do, which is why I like asking for tips so i can use this and that one to achieve what I really want ^.^.

Thanks for the info ^^. Anyway, never tried the Buffet prestige? If you didnt, then you should, you'd love it.

    Cheers

    Cheers
