The best way to move out of this recession is to pursue self-business. This video is proof of that. Relying on a job to pay you is very risky. This is so true, the people who established these massive corporations were not highly educated people. And to be quite honest I am sick of hearing of buddies coming out of University..and educated to the 9's but employers say they are "over qualified" ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!! Something, for sure, went wrong in our society down the line...
The problem is as technology has made much of human life much easier the wealth of these efficiencies are only accruing to a few who have gamed the system. (Think despots in thrid world and the above the law elitists in the western Corporatocracy. When this bifurcation becomes too pronounced you get revolution.
Hypothetically, technology improvements in virtually every facet of industry should enable more leisure time and higher quality of life to accrue to all mankind.
Jim needs to worry about having too efficient of a disruptive technology advance that causes him to be the target of a variety of industry cartels that would be unduly impacted financially if he creates something too efficient.
Many inventions are suppressed to maintain a status quo in our current hegemonic political military industrial financial system. It is a values issue - we have a system that worships the "dollar" with a mentality shown in "How Much Land does One Man Need? by Tolstoy.
college is a scam, wake up people..I have my own business all without a college degree. Do what you love not what society tells you to do. All that stuff about making more it's bullshit, it's all propaganda that they use to make you believe that shit and keep you under society mind control.
I was very naive at 18 when I chose to do a degree in physics. Now, at nearly 21, I wish I had chosen something like engineering - something I'd be more likely to get a job in.
@RW00632 You're missing the point. What you're talking about is clearly graduate school material. The report is scrutinizing the standard 4 year Bachelor's degree, which is basically a glorified high school diploma. I guarantee you that a bachelor's degree's worth of information could be learned at a public library in half the time, minus about $40,000.00 worth of debt.
@DiomedesStrosMkai Definitely, it's just not practical and its wasteful in every sense of the word. The only sensible argument I keep hearing is the ulterior motive argument - just go so you can get a better job afterwards, or more vomit inducing, you can't get a good job without a degree. Not only is this dishonest, silly and cowardly (in my opinion) but it is now officially a risk in and out of itself. There is no longer a guarantee of a high paying job afterwards.
I love the line "the typical person who graduated from college is likely to earn twice as much over their lifetime". NOT if you CANT find a job after college!
Well, kids have went thru 12 grades in school, and still cant read or write, and my point is, people can do research and read materials online and in books , as in "Seft taught!! Many a great pianist have never had a piano lesson. you cant teach Creativity!
you can learn ANYTHING ONLINE. Anything you can find in a book, can be found on a web page. Youtube features thousands of instructional videos. The only problem is, none of it provides a degree Certificate to prove you are educated! I never understood online colleges, how can they prove the person enrolled is the one that is actually completeting the assignments? A person can have a genius do their assignments for them, and being dumber than rocks, and still have a Certificate or Degree!
@capitanzach I think its all about WANTING to learn and interest. You can go to Yale and party, and play in class, and not pay attention, then CRAM to pass a test, or you can go to a state school, Study, take an interest, and ect. ect. its all what you make of it regardless of where you go. ANd I always wondered, what makes the proffesors at Yale any more knowledgeable than the ones at a State school.
College is necessary to teach our youth vital things such as binge drinking, drugs, sex and unproductivity. That was what drove our economy... into this hole.
@wtf9311 He's a libertarian that looks at college through a utilitarian lens. I disagree with many of his conservative views and wish he wouldn't buy into trickle down economics. I believe the future of education might be in free online educational institutions such Khan Academy. M.I.T. even started a free online education program. I wonder what his views are on these up and coming institutions.
@scrambledpenis When you go Job hunting, you still have to sell yourself, and a degree adds to your portforlio. A college degree doesnt gaurentee a job! Sure you can Cram to pass tests at universities, BUT,does that make you an asset to a Corp? As said earlier, schools can teach basics, but you cant teach creativity, and I believe it takes Creativity to land jobs. Individualism.
@scrambledpenis Success is relative, everyone interprets it differently. Was Motzart successful? By today's standards, no, he died in poverty, but people are still listening to his music today, so I would say yes, he was. If you're just think of success in terms of monetary gain you're probably not going to be successful anyways. You need to be passionate about something and genuinely want to contribute something to the world for the sake of it.
You don't have to do to college in a normal country such as USA, where there's always someone out there who will give you a chance to prosper if you have a good idea... in my country there are numbers of talented young people who could add something special to the people and make Serbia prosper, but because of corrupt politicians could not archieve their ideas blossom.
I think he makes a valid point. My degree is no longer viable. The industry to which it applied has changed drastically, and I only graduated in 1995. I've been anxious to go to grad school to change careers—is this merely a reflex? Perhaps I don't need more education, just a better plan. (If my plan were to be a doctor, then of course college is vital; good for some but not all.)

go to your state school then, price tag: $9,000 annually... Vanderbilt: $45,000. And your opportunities are practically identical.
