It's no insult to fans, to say their 'character names' at shows because that's their working name...Sometimes, creative writers invent curve-balls in order to keep the viewer's guessing and talking just as we are here now...really, they're doing what they set out to...Piper saying 'Terry' to hulk makes it personal, therefore if the fans believe that it's real, and Hogan still plays bad, they'll despise him even more more... hence the phrase 'heel'.
The only question I have is why was the belt not put on Roddy considering his obvious popularity at the time and the fact he had never been a world champion...would've been something WCW could've capitalized on that WWF never did!
I was thinking last night how Roddy piper would have went over in both world class and memphis. I think he would have ended up a great face in texas with the von erichs and a great heel in Memphis mocking lawler.

1. Piper felt he had nothing left to prove, and Hogan wanted to prove he could beat him after losing to Piper at Starrcade.
2. I think it was supposed to be PIper's farewell, so he brought his son.
3. Piper didn't want anything to escalate with his son standing right there.
