  • As a Clemson fan I REALLY dislike this clip.... don't know what went on that day (heard it was at CBS"s request) but as you can see, Tiger Band hasn't even started forming the tunnels or anything when they run down the hill. As a former member, that bothers me a lot. Oh well.

  • Nice job Will!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pretty good graphics for 1989

  • @tigerray what team is it that Clemson is playing starting at 0:31?

  • @bjwilliamsnjackbauer I think that's Wake Forest.

  • "Remember, If it's isn't in CBS Stereosound, it's made by somebody else"

    *salutes*

Oh, BTW, Tina Fey's Alma Mater had THE greatest Uniforms and Logo in College Football during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Too bad they had to change them.

  • I was at this game. Even got to meet the late great Banks McFadden after this game. Hope Dabo and staff can get Clemson back to the days of the Ford era.

  • I miss these old school intros. They were simple and to the point and got you into the mood of the game before the opening kickoff. College football back then seemed to be more simple and locally and old school fun. Now its all corporate and over bloated especially on ESPN. Do we really need to know who is signing on to what school or having the university's annual spring practice games on?

  • LOL.....guess some UVA fans didn't like me saying VT and Clemson are the only two 'real' ACC teams.

    LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • VT is. Clemson? Come back when you win the ACC and are ranked.

  • Apparently, you don't realize I'm a Hokie. We finished in the top 10.

  • UVA has zero. No consensus national champion was recognized until 1936.

  • A tradition like no other, Virginia vs Clemson, only on CBS...lol

  • Sigh, I wish Virginia was respectable again like it was under Welsh.

  • True, but Clemson was the highest ranked ACC team at the end of the year.

  • duke and virgina were both the acc champs though

  • Clemson won, pushing the streak to 29.

UVA would win the following season in Charlottesville, snapping the then-longest winning stread.

  • who won?

  • Even though I was born the same year, this game was played...It's great that this is on YouTube, so people of my generation can understand how intros should be for ALL SPORTS...CBS needs to go back to this intro, but their song is still great and I hope THEY DO NOT CHANGE IT!!!!!

  • i like how cbs did the cbs sports thing with the music before the opening video starts they need to bring that back

  • I miss the guys who wore the orange Virginia uniforms like Shawn Moore, Terry Kirby, Chris Slade, Matt Blundin, Herman Moore, Ray Roberts, etc. I don't miss the uniform itself. The uniform should have stayed about where it was in 1998 with the classy number and pergola collar. They've become much less distinctive since Groh "NFL-ified" them.

  • They brought back the old U-Va. unis this past season when they played Richmond. Even though I am a Maryland fan, related to this video, I still think that Clemson has one of the best traditions in the ACC yet alone in the country. As for U-Va., I remember seeing some great players as well wearing the old Wahoo unis that included Don Majkowski, yes the guy before Brett Farve in Green Bay. The ACC needs to have a week where every team wears throwback unis. Any suugestions?

  • i agree i like the old virginia uniforms

  • I was in Tiger Band for this game. As you can see at the 4:14 mark, CBS made them fire the gun eary and the team ran down before the band made the tunnell.

  • i miss the old Virginia uniforms and logo.

BEST LOGO AND UNIFORMS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL, PERIOD.

  • Clemson is an ACC team and therefore under Mr. Swofford, I'd imagine in favor of a playoff. Therefore, go Tigers, screw the BCS this seasone and everyone thereafter until we have a playoff! Pres. Davis is cool. He e-mails me after I write to him. Clemson rocks!!!

  • The only two real ACC teams.

  • UVA and Clemson.

  • Yeah, and guess what? No one cares.

  • How many titles does UVA have and how many does Clemson have? End of story jackass.

  • I'm a Terp fan, but I still think the "Most Entertaining 25 seconds in College Football" in Death Valley is one of the best traditions in the ACC, but in the Country. Also, CBS had among the best College Football coverage back then in the 80's rivaling ABC.

  • After this game it would 27 straight games until Clemson finally lost the next year.

  • at UVA no less

  • When was this game?

Also, what were some other noteable college games CBS broadcast that year?

  • 1989

  • Does anyone have any of the Clemson-Florida St. game from 1989?

  • why do i recognize jim nantz saying "TRADITIONally" lol

  • This video makes me proud to be a TIGER!!! GO TIGERS!!!

  • If this intro does'nt get ya wanting ready for some football, nothing will.

  • i wish that they had more than the sec. but ESPN's better either way

  • Something about that CBS into just gets the blood pumping.

  • yep. very rare to find this anywhere but ESPN classic, and i don't have that

  • The War Eagle is my favorite part of the opening. Bring it back, CBS!

  • From what it sounds like, there is a good chance that both Clemson and UVA will be looking for new head coaches soon. If you go to the coacheshotseat website and click on "Coaches Ready To Move Up"(I think that is what it says), it will give you a list of 19 coaches who are doing a great job that may be ready to take the next step. Are their any coaches on that list you would like to see at Clemson or UVA?

  • uva (im a fan)- caroll, bowden, paterno (even though the last 2 are about to die ('28, '26), and neither of them would go since even i'll admit uva stinks now

  • groh needs at least a record of one above .500 in order to keep his job i think

  • I was just a sophmore in high school, but I know where I was that day... I was there.

  • I'm not even an ACC fan (Nebraska fan) and for my money, that's the best college football intro going today. ABC and ESPN can't seem to decide on anything (but hey, when have they ever gotten anything right?).

20 years, and that music still hasn't changed. Gives ya goosebumps.

Ya, I'm a Husker fan, but I'm also a college football fanatic, and I've heard that music enough to know how great it is.

  • I was at this game and CU roared 34-20!!! Damn, I miss Danny Ford!!!

  • Football music ruled in the 80's.

  • This was awesome. I miss this stuff. The 80's sports music ruled.

  • And thank goodness, as of this reply, CBS is still using that great theme for its college football coverage.

  • This theme music was first used by CBS for Super Bowl XXI (Denver vs. N.Y. Giants) in Pasadena in January, 1987.

  • I guess they quickly decided that this theme music was more suited for college football. No complaints here.

  • yeah, before it was restricted to the SEC only.

  • And Clemson would one this one too. But the very next year in 1990, the Cavs finally beat Clemson, albeit in Charlottesville. They also managed a tie in Death Valley in 1991.

  • I Love Clemson!

  • and I hate UVA!

  • My prayers and condolences go out to your friends and family...

  • great post, thanks

  • I can believe this. This is CBS SPORTS COLLEGE FOOTBALL at its best.
