Mel's a great speaker and a brave advocate of civil disobedience for what she believes in. Respect to her. She answers all the points put to her, which is more than can be said for the inane ramblings of davidbrown303.
These people should watch the excellent documentary called The Great Global Warming Swindle also on youtube which debunks the theory that global warming is caused by human produced CO2 emissions.
Mel comes across well, but it's environmental protesters that seem to be leading the objections to renewables in my area: Severn Barrage, the would-be local wind farm ("sensitive area") and bio-fuel investment by a local company
not if we significantly cut our horribly wasteful use of energy. Becoming energy efficient is not sexy - but it is the cheapest, easiest and fastest way of combating Climate Change right now.
This needs to be coupled with massive investment in renewables (and ending subsidies to oil and coal).
Just because we don't like Climate Change, doesn't mean it's going to go away.
If you want to fill the energy gap the loss of coal and nuclear would produce with renewables you've only got a v. few years to do it. We would need to run the equivalent of a wartime economy and need massive effort and sacrifes from everybody (inc. personal carbon allowances).
Walk around your local area & have a good look at folk. Think they're up to it?
Brown has just said he wants the UK to spend £100bn (!!) to boost renewable energy to 15% by 2020 (noting that this will mean household bills will go up by £300).
Even that v limited ambition is a pipe dream, the UK is (arguable) the most indebted country in the world. And voters are squealing they can't take any more price rises. The Tories will be in power in 2010 and they are hinting at tax cuts and an ending of the petrol tax escalator.
Long live Kingsnorth!!! Bring on the coal!!! I'm gonna need all the extra lekky i can get to run my new turbo size 60" Plasma screen....get over it you crusty green weirdo's, and get a proper job...
