It's a shame most virtuoso ngoni players aren't on youtube. Moriba Koïta for instance, he's the most amazing ngoni player I've ever seen and his album Sorotoumou is a major classic. I wish more people outside of Mali and the Westaf diaspora could hear him.
@Zvabaz It is part of a family from which the banjo is derived. The banjo, however, more resembles a similar instrument called "akonting." (I have a link on my channel page in favorites.)
Can anyone tell me if the number of strings on this xalam is traditional or is this a modern innovation? I've only ever seen 2 long (fretted) strings. Is there ever a fourth long string on a traditional xalam? Thanx. I absolutely love this. Post more xalam music please.

@malfini1 in fact, this one have a close relationship withing the modern banjo. the modern guitars have more similarities with akonting. take a look.

It has about 4 or 5 strings, yes, it is traditional.
