I seem to recall a Pam/Herb scene where Pam was contributing to Herb's campaign and Asa walked in wasn't too happy about it. I think he must have been supporting the O'Neill family. Asa was definitely upset about the brouhaha over his contribution to Herb's governorship and Herb having to step down. I believe the stuff with Pam and Pete came later.
Why did Maggie have such a problem with Dorian? If I remember correctly, did she have a crush on Jon Russell or could it have been Herb too? Maybe she didn't like both of these men feening over Dorian! Just a thought....
Maggie had a romantic interest in Jon but she also wanted a dominate place in Herb's life as his ADA. She was ambitious. Dorian interfered on both fronts.
Wasn't Herb already District Attorney?

It was a combination of a lot of things but mainly Maggie is a competitive woman and so is Dorian. In short, they hated each other.
