Hey, grisraw. When he says that he died the first time, during the war, he only died for a little while. So, he wasn't in heaven or a second life. At the end, he does die inside of the morgue drawer. However, before he dies, he visits the future once again, (which is not a dream) and is able to see how he helped Jackie have a better life. I personally think this is one of the best movies ever made. If you like, you should see 12 monkeys too.
