  • In rough seas, it will be difficult to keep the boat's bow pointed into the wind. Most boats will fall off and lie beam to the seas. This causes the boat to roll a lot, and makes foredeck work tougher for your crew.

    When you fall off downwind to create a wind shadow, the boat will roll less, the decks become more stable and drier, and the new sail will flog less as it's hanked on and hoisted..
