  • Being a divorced veteran with PTSD, this song really has a crushing impact on my soul.. I can't stop listening to it. Most of the time I feel nothing, at least this song makes me feel human.

  • Matt Berninger looks like a younger brother of Julian Baratt in here

  • MY MINDS NOT RIGHT MY MINDS NOT RIGHT! the rawness and intensity reminds me of debaser by the pixies, fucking love it!

  • @93Xarxes HAHAHAHAA XD good one LMAO

  • Saw them last week in Perth, they played this which I hadn't heard before and it blew my mind. Best concert I've been to so far (which I wasn't expecting).

  • One of the best National tracks in my humble opinion. Agree with @UzeYourBrain - very Pixie-esque. A little more raw than some of the stuff of the last two albums.

  • haha Matt looks so young

  • @UzeYourBrain Adblock my friend, adblock :)

  • Beautiful.

  • My mind is no longer right.

  • My mind's not right.

  • So underrated

  • matt was so hot in this young-curly years...

  • Vevo is totally lame. Not only do the commercials suck donkey balls in hell, the sound quality is also pretty fucked up right nja!

  • baritones are yum. :)

  • what's weird al doing on the left

  • My name is Abel. No joke

  • I know a guy named Abel. He's nice.

  • Look, Vevo. I came here to see The National. If I REALLY wanted ads and commercials, I'd WATCH MY FLIPPIN' TELEVISION.

  • Not that i'm not appreciating the song, i know many enjoy this and much respect, but i just want to understand why do people like this song? is it because of the lyrics? the music? how does listening to this make you feel? what is good about it?

  • @in2universe

You sound like Anthony Fantano (which is a good thing).

  • @AllRiseForDrEvil hahahaha, i just watched his review of the national high violet album and he knows what i'm talking about :P

  • Obviously NotJesus

  • Obviously Jesus

  • I'm sad I missed out on this band for six freaking years! Seriously, this is my new favorite band!

  • Eh. It's not for me.

  • I guess you could say that this.....is a National anthem.

    YEAAAAAHHHHH

  • @TheMerrick2009 That was pretty good XD

  • first time ive heard this song....&*!$#@ amazing song by an amazing band.

  • i just saw them live last night. amazing.

  • @iamkatiehearmerawrrr No! WAY?!

  • God, they are fucking awesome. Thank you Michael from my university Radio for introducing me to them!!

  • Love it.

  • Maybe it's just me, but I feel like that this song is singing about something negative "my minds not right" etc. but that something about the combination of the music and lyrics makes it sound generally positive. as in i leave the song feeling like its saying: my minds not right but thats life and im going to figure this shit out eventually.

  • i actually dnt mind hving this song stuck in my head :)

  • seeing these guys live next month at arcade fire

  • starting to sellout

  • @wojo1127 just cause theyre becoming more and more popular, people are opening their eyes to true music, nominated for awards doesnt mean their selling out, it means people are waking up to real music

  • i really believe in the national.totally devoted to them.

  • @cosmicrider287 Well thank god, they're just humans then

  • My name is Abel :)

  • the national really have convinced us!

  • I know Abel. I love Abel.

  • This is my favorite National song. Alligator is fucking brilliant. Seen them live three times now. I think this might be their favorite too =)

  • great song

  • Dear Vevo, Let me start by sayin get your corporate asses off youtube! Ever since these big companies started paying off youtube so they could post their friggin videos we can't post ours. We are flagged for infringement evry time we include a song we like in our videos.

This is YOUtube, the place where we can post OUR videos. If we wanted to listen to music from you wed go to your damn website.

To people who want greedy corporates gone thumbs up and copy and paste this

  • @0oA13Xo0 Don't even bother, you think a silly little comment like this is going to do anything, even if you get a thousand people to comment? Not watching VEVO's is about the only constructive strategy against it, yet what would that do? Pretty much absolutely nothing. I know it all sucks very much but don't let it be bigger than you.

  • @0oA13Xo0 ya, cuz unlimited free music videos sure suck eh? we in the first world are soo hard done by

  • @0oA13Xo0 I love how you just assume the rest of us want to pay to use YouTube. I sure as hell don't. So stop wasting your damn time. VEVO gives them a great deal of money, so that we don't have too.I'd rather watch the actual music video than your crummy fail video, and you don't even have any videos uploaded. These aren't "corporate" videos, these are the ones made by the artists, and I know this way the artist also gets some money for their work so that they can keep giving us what we want.

  • f#cking awesome song!

  • Cool as hell.

  • JonnyMod, Abel is actually quite old. If you're looking for melody, check out High Violet which was on the top 2010 albums. If you're looking for rhythmically complex listen to Fake Empire for guitar and keys on Boxer album. This album is also good. The drummer has marching band rudiments which means he probably spent a hell of a long time perfecting his drumming style. The two twin brothers are classically trained SO......not sure whether you should criticize the playing.

  • I've got a feeling I'll get enough replies to answer this:

How is this music? This is terrible. I look up a Best Albums 2010 list and this was here...there is barely a vocal melody. The drums are so redundant...not one instrumentalist has contributed a real melody.

This is terrible. I am 23 years old and I can't understand my own generation.

  • @JonnyMod it follows under the category "indie"

alot of other indie bands have a similar sound and are good

i mean no disrespect but this band is probablly one of the bands around that can produce better music than most artists of the same time period as them...

  • @bassguy215

You have no idea how hard it is not to just come back at you with a 'bass player' wisecrack.

  • @JonnyMod I have to ask -- if this is terrible, what do you consider good?

Personally, I'm blown away by this song, and this band for that matter. It most certainly has melody both vocally and instrumentally. They're pretty simple melodies, but those are usually the best kind.

  • @JonnyMod its not about having an awesome bass line or an awesome drum line or whatever, its about music that cuts into your soul, thats what they do best...lyrics that bring tears to your eyes, im 22 and this is my favorite band by far

  • @JonnyMod what do you mean by the drums being "redundant"?

also im hearing a fair bit of melody here, fair enough if you dont like their music but of all bands to pick on why the national???

  • @danlikesmusicalot

There is definitely worse music out there, but I am having issues with this being critically acclaimed. The drums (in my opinion...blah blah subjective) do not serve to carry the rhythm. The snare hits are distracting and irritating, nevermind that it carries like that throughout the song. I'm for creativity and making the instrument your own, but more high-hat and less snare is what the song called for--they are scared to be obvious. The Beatles are timeless for a reason.

  • @JonnyMod perhaps you should listen to something like brainy or mistaken for starngers of their album Boxer, the drums on those songs are pretty great, the nationa are pretty typical of the indie rock style so its probably just not you're cup of tea...which is fine

i still think the national are one of the best bands of our generation

  • @JonnyMod I have to agree. If the snare wasn't so repetitive and loud, this song would be a lot better. The drums shouldn't be louder than the vocalist and guitarist, especially when it's the same beat over and over.

  • @JonnyMod i agree with you. there are lots of people out there who don't see anything special in the national. i guess the lyrics are great but the music is terrible. And those who enjoy this song only look at the lyrics. While others like me usually tend to listen the tunes of any songs.

  • God damn. I'm stunned by how addicted I am to this album and especially this song. It's not as nuanced as a good chunk of their music but there is something so gutterally satisfying about this song. I cannot leave it be. Just. Can. Not.

  • 5 dislikers are clinically insane.

  • the drummer looks like john lennon

  • With all the great songs The National have released since then, I still think this is their best song.

  • The drummers shirt switches from red to black towards the end.

  • what a lovely drumset

  • this song makes me want to strip down and jump up and down on my bed rocking out to the sound of awesome

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE=that pretty much sums it up! :)

  • Stop being so fucking good. Stop it stop it stop it they actually expect me to DO WORK HERE!

  • 25000 is 1/100000000 of what this band desrves

  • one of their crappier songs

  • @leisurelydinner I might hate you...

  • Brilliant. Forever.

  • such a awesome song! I heard this while bowling this vid came up and ever since i fucking love the national. Great song!

  • reminds me of the pixies and joy division. who gives a shit. both great bands.

  • Reminds me of Joy Division . . .ish. Nonetheless a great band

  • @yaudie what joy division song does this sound like to you? to me this sounds like born to run

  • no matter what song it is some people will love it. i like their other songs much better in fact this one sucks IMO. its not very unique. but people still talk about how great it is. i guess were all pretty different. im not bashing the people who like this song just saying im surprised every song has so many people who love it.

  • @adulby

true true.. btw, i have a serious case of the munchees. just letting you know.

  • I want to favorite this ten more times

  • How can this video only have 7000 views? it's one of their best songs, imo

  • @RJoudrey1235 Now it has 16,000 views. ;)

  • @RJoudrey1235

People avoid this vid because it's on Vevo, and we all know everyone hates Vevo

  • @drunkencomputer true that, vevo sucks ass.

  • @RJoudrey1235 There ya go - almost 25000 now.

  • @RJoudrey1235 hehe how's 75,000? :)

  • @RJoudrey1235 because you said that, it now has 80000 :)

  • @RJoudrey1235 88,000 views later... HOW CAN THIS VIDEO ONLY HAVE 95,000 VIEWS??? It deserves 10,000,000!!!

  • Abel is a pretty cool street fighter character

  • This song is excellent to an xth degree.

  • do you think they are on the shy side? just sayin.

  • @itookallthenames what do u mean?

  • @vanillaskynet "on the shy side" just means they are a shy bunch of dudes. don't get me wrong, they are one my favourite bands

  • yes alligator is probably one of the best albums
