I like the way fire chiefs think they can make money doing transports. Like you said, 911 only averages 38% collection. I've seen a couple do this in Texas and within six months they're back in front of the city council telling them they mis-judged the collections and need more money to operate. Patient care, in my opinion, sucks. The troops don't really want to do EMS, they want to fight fire. Private EMS is more care oriented since that is their only function. Hope they see the reality.
very well said, great points. we have had the same thing come up several times in my area with the county FD wanting to take over transport but thankfully the other smaller FDs have stood against the idea and the county medical director is a great supporter of private EMS versus FD based EMS. So my job i safe at least for the next 2 years when our contract is up for review again.
There are FD's here that would love to kick Acadian out of there area but the fact of the matter is, unless they find a magic budget to absorb the cost of manpower and supplies they will not have a chance of giving the same care we can provide. Well said Scott.
