  • Pure Shawn, no frills, just the voice, the guitar, she fills the stage just with herself. If you ever get the chance to see her perform, GO!

  • Does this woman have to die before she attains superstardom??? I simply adore her work. No artist has her sense of phrasing, and few, her complete melding with her instrument. Please Shawn, keep writing and recording until your fingers drop off!

  • @FlyingHorseKnuckles I agree with you....she is an amazing artist...she sings naturally from her heart and plays music from her soul! Love her music!

  • @TrishKingMaine I wish she would make another CD soon... :-(

  • @FlyingHorseKnuckles Word is she's beginning work on a new album. Hooray! Not much definite yet, except she says she's "doesn't think" she'll be working with Leventhal, at least as producer.

Is it me or does she blow the first verse of this song, getting the "promise of" and "labor of" lines reversed? It's a little different every time she does the song, but always reversed. Oops!

  • very talented and amazing voice!

  • I really admire this great singer/songwriter. She does her thing and ignores the pressure many others seem to feel to sell sex as well as music. This makes her all the more beautiful. Love to meet Shawn & see her compete in a triathlon. What a woman!!

  • Shawn did an amazing version of this song on one of KGSR's (Austin TX) Broadcasts series back in the mid 90s. If anyone has a copy the single in file form, I'd greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, the CD is currently out of print.

  • She's great and with that Martin guitar is even better. Love her playing and singing.

  • I'm happy to report that birds talk to me now too...dogs and cats too...it's really weird...but this Austin with a hurricane coming up I-35 just in time for ACL...how weird is that? And we need the water too...

also have mastered that strumming technique...finally...all aboard for Mars...it is Mars isn't it Shawn?

  • Wow..

37 more days 'til I see her LIVE

  • the right hand technique drives me crazy...it's just so fluid...I think that's the single most distinct aspect of her playing...that driving layered rythm...it makes all the difference in this song...and others...I'll keep trying

  • She's got some special kind of pick. Do you know what it is?

  • I noticed that but thought it must be an optical illusion...it seems very very flexible almost like it lays flat against the strings...I stop framed it many times and in one frame could see that she holds it very much in the center of the pick...can't figure it out...

  • Hey, thanks. I guess I'll get a flexible pick and try it out. I agree, she is amazing on the guitar and keeps me picking it up every day.

  • you're welcome but I don't think that's the solution...it's a bit mysterious to me...at times it even seems to be something other than a conventional pick...I have progressed somewhat with the rythmic technique...but she's just so FLUID...she's the best...I love every inflection and sublty of her playing and singing and the sheer natural beauty of her voice.

  • I agree completely. I envy her her voice. Can't find a flaw! Sounds like you are as into her guitar prowess as I am, can I ask where you get access to her tabs or sheet music, or do you just figure it out? I'm not quite able to do that yet. Watching her videos helps.

  • If you give me a specific song you're interested in I might be able to help...

  • Thanks for the offer. I just thought you might have a source for tabs that I am not aware of. I don't really have a specific song in mind. I just want to have the music available when I want to play around with it. When I get into a specific song and need help I may look you up!

  • I pick them up all over the place...wherever I can. A few I figured out by ear but not necessarily the way she does it...Private universe you can figure out by watching this video...it's straight forward except for her right hand. But Neil Finn's version is very similar...try googling the title...I'm using the Finn version at the moment.

  • Thanks for the tips!

  • My guess is that it's a .38mm Dunlop nylon pick. I use them sometimes for a really bright, smooth strumming sound like she's getting here. My own D-28 sounds very similar to this whith this combination.

  • I've been watching youtubes of Shawn Colvin for like the last hour- and I never get sick of it.

For the ummteenth time, Shawn- Wow.
