The Surge was due to end originally as Bush promised-at the end of the summer of 2007 and to be assessed by benchmarks met. Those benchmarks were NOT passed to show the surge as a success.However the Dems saved Bush's arse by allowing the surge to be extended because they saw it had potential if extended. Get it! I don't think you understand. the Constitution was suspended in 2007. Bush was free to wiretap anybody until now and we'll never even know the details because there is no paper trail. So it's not about "expediency". It's about restoring as much of the 4th amendment before election season as possible so we are not in an immediate danger of a total nazi takeover.

He was elected using flowery, emotionally-loaded, falacious speech, accusing any unpopular laws and supporting any popular laws, telling each individual only what they wanted to hear (even though it may contradict what he says at a different time), and getting an extremely large vote percentage from the African American populations. About 95%of voting blacks voted for Obama, so there was definitely some race-based judgement (racism) involved.
There was probably some demagoguery there, too.

Those benchmarks were NOT passed to show the surge as a success.However the Dems saved Bush's arse by allowing the surge to be extended because they saw it had potential if extended. Get it! epic: primary for national election. He and his operatives assess the environment, taking note of 1) caucus mechanisms and 2) how delegates are awarded in voting precincts (turns out this is complicated in some places - based to some extent on how much Repub competition). They make the plan, Obama executes. When he wins, he wins big, when he loses, doesn't cost him too much. Even Clinton's people give him total cred for outfoxing them. Obama is all about getting it done.

epic: state senate. He learned all he needed to learn about the process of filing the petitions in order to be on the dem ballot. His opponents didn't do their homework, so he ends up the only dem on the ballot and then whups his opponent. learn the territory, plan, execute.

epic: the book deal at age 33 is pretty much impossible to get - he had had no political experience at all, only been elected prez of harvard law review in charge of like 80 editors. It's a beautiful book, he's a good writer. how did he get the deal? Easy, Obama is very hard to stop once he puts his mind to something - assess, plan, execute.

epic: no one can "know," but there are major clues. you can look at his personal life. he came from nothing, and has learned how to get things done. 1) his book deal, 2) state senate seat, 3) primary. what Obama does is 1) he does the homework necessary, 2) listens to input 3) comes up with a plan, 4) executes. I.e., he's a strategist who knows how to lead and inspire, but he's also a manager (extremely smooth campaign with large #'s of people).

I supported Obama in the beginning because he stood firm in his convictions. He didn't appear to participate in the "go along to get along" type of politics.
I just want to see some prosecutions. I want to see people arrested and charged with treason. I am a very, very bitter former Obama supporter who is very pissed off at his capitulation. I will not tolerate any excuses that Democrats passed unconstitutional laws based on fear. It goes against basic American Principles.

Just so my position is clear. If Obama supports this bill with Immunity, I will not vote for him.
I can understand the political expedience of him re-instituting the check the FISA Court establishes on warrant less wire taps. However to strip from the People their Constitutional Power to demand accountability is a very obscene situation. Obama's participation in this scheme is atrocious.
Just want to be 100% clear.

I don't think you understand. the Constitution was suspended in 2007. Bush was free to wiretap anybody until now and we'll never even know the details because there is no paper trail. So it's not about "expediency". It's about restoring as much of the 4th amendment before election season as possible so we are not in an immediate danger of a total nazi takeover.

Again, just so my position is clear as well. Bush is not going to sign into law anything that limits his powers unless he sees some political gain from it. It is evident that the dems base is angry about it and that it hurts the dems. that's why he's going to sign it even if it's a limitation on his powers. So in fact Obama is not supporting this because it's "expedient" but rather he is supporting it even though he will take a hit from his base. I admire him for that: both smart and brave!

In doing so, the precedence will be set that, if a rogue President sends you a letter asking you to subvert Civil Liberties on his behalf, the Congress will pass a law which will grant you immunity and conceal your participation. Or for a Congressperson, create laws which are designed to conceal your involvement in treasonous activities. We can go back later and create another law granting ourselves immunity..

In Aug 2007 Congress was blackmailed under threats of impending terr attcks against the Capitol to vote 4 extra judicial wiretapping of Americans, ie no FISA warrants & no paper trail. What Obama voted 4 was to re institute the paper trail. The telecom immunity can be rescinded by another act of Congress in the future. The consequences of warrantless wiretappings and another 911 cannot. Instead of whining learn how 2 encrypt your comm.

No, the ACLU is not an idiot. It is terrible what's happening in this country, including the immunity part of this bill. However the ACLUs job is to defend civil liberties not to assess what's politically possible. to reinstitute the FISA courts and establish a clear paper trail and get the telecoms at the same time is currently impossible with the slim majority in Congress and the current pres. so it's all a matter of priorities! right now im happy if we get 1more crack at the presidency

What's "unconstitutional" is that we lived 4 almost 1 year with a suspended constitution. You realize that there has been no FISA warrants issued since Aug of 2007! that's what's unconstitutional. Again, you worry so much about the constitution in an age of electronic gov surveillance, learn how to encrypt your communication, use anonymizer software and thus force mass surveillance to become prohibitively expensive. all this whining about Obama's vote is pathetic!
