Also, if you play 5 strings, try standard tuning and B string for D note. For me, it was easier to play but of course this may change from person to person :)

@Eufratbre People who say that are stupid cunts. You use a pick for a certain sound. In some genres of music playing finger style on bass just doesn't fit tone wise. In some pick doesnt. In most slap is utterly useless. So many of the jazz fusion wankers forget how to write an actual song and focus too much on "technique" (aka musical masturbation), ignoring anything other than overly complex slap/fingerstyle lines.

@hojima disagree mate slap can be useful. how can you listen to rhcp or mark king or artists like that and say that. I understand what you mean though it is overly used to sound 'epic' and it actually often sounds shit. personally i think picking doesnt sound great in anything compared to the running man fingers :)

@ggrady87 For some random root note rock bass line? Sure. But listen to anything around noise rock, some punk variants or some types of metal and you need the attack you get with a pick. It is also a lot more ergonomic to play with a pick if you want sustained notes on multiple strings, rather than having to do up plucking, which is really uncomfortable.

I dont know, I generally think that collaboration is the best way to make good music, and when I see a musician (especially someone like mark king who is basically the center of his band) solo for minutes while everyone else stops, I question whether their goal is to make good art or to simply elevate themself.

@hojima completely agree mate. I know you can interpret music how you like, but personally i feel that sticking so Bass-ics (like what i did there?) is always the best. Listen to bands like radiohead, great bass player but nobody knows who he is, however without him you can forget thom yorke or johnny greenwood because he is holding it together. Same in reggae music etc, i feel thats where it works best. Flea is great though and shows an alternative to bass playing that appeals to some people :)
