Yes, I was there too, how cool that he wore tails but not a tie, and the black shirt in "Cavalleria" & the white shirt for "La Navarraise"... I was in the 8th row left facing the stage & I could see him waiting to come on stage, what a thrill, and even more than the "Cavalleria", I loved the duet that Elina & Roberto sang in "La Navarraise", which had so much squillo that I thought wineglasses all over NYC were shattering - what voices, what an evening!!!

Thank you, Roberto! :)
It's 2010, and anyone who was here in NYC for the Carnegie Hall "Cavalleria", knows his voice is even stronger. More range, younger, broader tones.......And he's still gorgeous!

As arisargirls so aptly put it, "Alagna is still there singing in a fantastic level all around the world" - "Carmen" in Barcelona (Sept & Oct) "La Navaraise" with Elina Garanca at Carnegie Hall (in concert) (Oct), "Don Carlo" at the Met (Nov/Dec) "Carmen" at the Met (Jan) "Francesca Da Rimini" Opera de Paris (Jan/Feb), "Aida" ROH, Covent Garden (Mar.) "Faust" Vienna (April) "Manon" Vienna (May) "Le Cid" Marseilles (June) "Faust" Opera de Paris, etc, etc. and "Tosca" at the Met 2012.
Fantastic acting. The acting by itself brings the performance to a whole new level and has a huge emotional impact. Unfortunately the singing is rather boring and across the video it was quite flat. I love watching videos of Alagna for his acting, though. He is a league above all the other tenors in terms of acting.
Qudolph -- why do you say this is awful? It is some of the best singing I've heard Alangna do. His pitch is better, his high notes purer, and his technique feels much more solid. Gorgeous and emotional interpretation.
GREAT DICTION! You can understand every word! Très près de la parole... génial! J'aime le pianissimo sur «m'enivrais». He's flat sometimes, like a lack of tonus or energy (but he's not pushing, and that's good!). I'm not sure about the forte «une chose à toi».... It works so well when it's done pianissimo with the intention (alla Kaufmann). Summary : I like it!
There are definitely some surprising issues with intonation here, but his voice and characterization are lovely nonetheless. This is definitely the kind of repertoire he should be singing. Alagna had gotten off-track with his voice for a while, but is apparently returning to form, according to recent reviews. Good for him!

And obviously you saintsaens21 don't know how to count, as there are only 2 instances of pp in the singing part (plus 1 sempre pp, which means as much as 'continue this pp'). I know only one recording where the tenor sings a pp on the high b flat, a recording by José Carreras, but even he sings this note ff in other recordings. Apparently this has become common practice.

I'm learning this in French ( having performed it in English ) so it makes sense to listen to Alagna. I do however find that extended A with the dimi on Je m'enivrais annoying. If you want to show off Roberto sing the b-flat pp as the composer intended !
don't like either. His jumps are too obvious when he aims at the high notes. He actually sings new notes, not on the score, by doing this. The device is good but the manner in which it is used is too much and coarse
oh if you click "view all comments" my mention of domingo's timbre is actually a response to the guy who compared the two. that's why i mentioned it. you have been misled by youtube!
That was the most memorable Carmen I've ever seen. During that aria you could feel the silence of the audience and at the end he received HUGE-HUGE ovations. Béatrice Uria-Monzon is the most beautiful opera singer (maybe not amongst the best mezzos out there) which made that Carmen look truly special.
I could be wrong, but I think Italia1987 may be saying that his placement is all over the place. Vowel sonority extremely uneven. In Alagna's defense, however, it's almost impossibly hard to achieve the evenness in French that comes so much more easily in Italian. Anyhow...
I think he meant all over the place "technically". I have heard him sing this much better than he sang it here. The "point" hs normally has on his sound as well as the spin is gone here. Sounds like he may have a cold. Singers DO get sick. But as usual, impecably musical.
I love to hear Alagna singing in French. He has a perfect diction although in this aria he tends to be a bit flat consistently. That doesn´t diminish the beauty of his voice and the intensity of his romantic rendition.
Alagna is one of my favorites, but in this video his pitch is all over the place. Also, that first high note with the diminuendo was anti musical. He held it so long to show he could yet he ruined the effect of the aria with it. Also, the final high Bb wasn't solid but strained and his vibrato wobbled as a result. He is lucky his breath control and his closed vowels are so darned good, cause they are the only things keeping him in the game these days.
bjoerling is the greatest tenor ever because he sang with power, control, beauty and understanding of the role he was playing. Imagine Pav's voice believing he was cavaradossi totally bereft of love and any hope... as he sang "e lucevan le stelle"
For you he is the greatest. I love him to, but it is very personal. I don't like the sound of Alagna, but he is very good. For me there are a few Tenors that go into my soul and make me cry. Pavarotti is number 1, Fritz Wunderlich is number 2, the really young Carreras is number 3.
This has to be one of my favorite Alagna clips here on YouTube. The build-up to the line "un seul désir, un seul espoir" is simply beautiful to watch and especially to hear, and what follows is just as amazing. His voice is simply magnificent.
Yes, he is cute as hell, and a good singing actor. I'd fall for him at once if he sang this to me! (and I'm not even that big a fan...) But he does scoop a lot, the high note on "je m'enivrais" is self-indlugent rather than touching, and the final phrase ("j'étais une chose à toi") audibly taxes him. Is it just me or does he sing flat most of the time?
I love Alagna and I have many of his recordings. His prononciation is perfect, he has a beautiful voice and a lots of feeling. Singing on stage is a different ball game than in a studio. This song is sang perfectly. The best French Tenor in our days,
montoyapaulo-couldn't agree more. Just because singers of the past were incredible, doesn't take anything away from great singers today. Alagna and Villazon spring to mind amongst tenors. Nice diminuendo on vrais the first Ab
This is a very good interpretation. He adds much nuance to the text and music to the dramatic benefit of the piece. E.g., the melting diminuendo at 'je m'enivrais'. For me at least it's a shame he didn't sing the B-flat pianissimo like he has in the past, and like Carreras and Vickers have. I feel sorry for those who cling on to the past singers as a way of putting down present singers and music-making. Quality must be recognised and respected, no matter the time.
Alagna in French. What could be better:)??

Domingo

I agree that he is a little bit flat - he picks up pitch during the note sometimes. Although it is bad technique, it actually has a nice effect.
Also, his forte makes his vibrato too strong...his pianissimo is superb, though.
The interaction between Alagna and Carmen - Who plays her? - is fantastic.
He is not the best I have ever heard, but still very good.

pipilbc 2 years ago
emalag999 2 years ago

Stonato,ingolato e orrendo...povero Bizet!!
zorrodelalirica 3 years ago
davidotama06 2 years ago
davidotama06 2 years ago
alepeccia 2 years ago
Saluti

If Alagna did not go to school or get any lessons it clearly did not matter because he can sing this aria better than Pav, Dom and the rest.

Its got to hurt to have an operatic tenor belting it out six inches from your ear.
bluefish990 3 years ago 2
the Ab on vrais is stunning, why shouldn't he show off a little

elsuperelegido 3 years ago
cid030271 3 years ago

melomanemorino 3 years ago 3
I am so in love with this man. He's got this sexy simpatico look and such warm musicality and temperament. Angela is so lucky to have him!
pesciolinotriste 3 years ago 4
I'm learning this in French ( having performed it in English ) so it makes sense to listen to Alagna. I do however find that extended A with the dimi on Je m'enivrais annoying. If you want to show off Roberto sing the b-flat pp as the composer intended !
meva1 3 years ago
I usually like Alagna, but his intonation is rather poor in this recording. Not the best I've heard
Edhyde24601 3 years ago
sexiest tenor alive. incredibly sexy. there's somehting about him...it's not just his looks. It's the charisma perhaps
operadonna 3 years ago 5
don't like either. His jumps are too obvious when he aims at the high notes. He actually sings new notes, not on the score, by doing this. The device is good but the manner in which it is used is too much and coarse

i don't care about the comments, he sounds too good to me, like domingo's timbre.
musiciansinorder 3 years ago
you can like it, but not even close to domingo's timbre
devastaticon 3 years ago
it shouldnt as they are both different tenors. Domingo is a dramatic tenor and Algna is a lyric tenor
Hence the timbre difference
mtenor 3 years ago
oh if you click "view all comments" my mention of domingo's timbre is actually a response to the guy who compared the two. that's why i mentioned it. you have been misled by youtube!

That was the most memorable Carmen I've ever seen. During that aria you could feel the silence of the audience and at the end he received HUGE-HUGE ovations. Béatrice Uria-Monzon is the most beautiful opera singer (maybe not amongst the best mezzos out there) which made that Carmen look truly special.
hwhap13 3 years ago
I could be wrong, but I think Italia1987 may be saying that his placement is all over the place. Vowel sonority extremely uneven. In Alagna's defense, however, it's almost impossibly hard to achieve the evenness in French that comes so much more easily in Italian. Anyhow...
erutander83 4 years ago 2
how was he all over the place?
he is french and sing french perfectly, just as he did here.
TheRealEmit 4 years ago

He is lucky his breath control and his closed vowels are so darned good, cause they are the only things keeping him in the game these days.

domingo sings this aria the best. for carmen and tosca, domingo ftw

you live in the past,
beside Bjoerling was Ice-cold I don't care how easy he could sing, I rather hear Alagna
rositaibarra 4 years ago 2
bjoerling is the greatest tenor ever because he sang with power, control, beauty and understanding of the role he was playing. Imagine Pav's voice believing he was cavaradossi totally bereft of love and any hope... as he sang "e lucevan le stelle"
zuleron 4 years ago
For you he is the greatest. I love him to, but it is very personal. I don't like the sound of Alagna, but he is very good. For me there are a few Tenors that go into my soul and make me cry. Pavarotti is number 1, Fritz Wunderlich is number 2, the really young Carreras is number 3.
franktenor 3 years ago 2
This has to be one of my favorite Alagna clips here on YouTube. The build-up to the line "un seul désir, un seul espoir" is simply beautiful to watch and especially to hear, and what follows is just as amazing. His voice is simply magnificent.
calenheniel 4 years ago 4
Yes, he is cute as hell, and a good singing actor. I'd fall for him at once if he sang this to me! (and I'm not even that big a fan...) But he does scoop a lot, the high note on "je m'enivrais" is self-indlugent rather than touching, and the final phrase ("j'étais une chose à toi") audibly taxes him. Is it just me or does he sing flat most of the time?
Matt75003 4 years ago
I love Alagna and I have many of his recordings. His prononciation is perfect, he has a beautiful voice and a lots of feeling. Singing on stage is a different ball game than in a studio. This song is sang perfectly. The best French Tenor in our days,

I love Alagna for many things, but this is grossly out of tune. Brilliant high bes though :)
martello79 4 years ago

Why on earth does he have to scoop up to the 1st note in the piece? (La-a fleur que tu m'avais jetee...)

Very good version by Alagna. But not close to old greats like Bjorling.
Still good enough to compete among todays tenors.

colliereuk 4 years ago
montoyapaulo-couldn't agree more. Just because singers of the past were incredible, doesn't take anything away from great singers today. Alagna and Villazon spring to mind amongst tenors. Nice diminuendo on vrais the first Ab

Insomma...

Quality must be recognised and respected, no matter the time.
montoyapaulo 4 years ago 3
SimSutcliff 4 years ago
