I think part of it was that the Savage Garden's popularity ultimately suffered the sophomore slump with the second album, Daniel Jones possibly also wanted to move on from Savage Garden and do other things, and that both Darren and the record label were pushing to go solo.

omg the parallels: george michael in a two-guy band (Wham) w/ a straight guy and darren hayes in a two-guy band (Savage Garden) w/ a straight guy. They both write their own music, they both go solo. Both the other band members disappear from the public eye. what are the chances?
