I think everyone plays Civilization IV differently. I myself play mostly on "Settler" because I'm more focused on research. When I trade techs with other civilizations, I always trade the low-tech ones. I'm also more of a peace-bringer than a warmonger. And I don't automate my citizens.

I play much differently than you. I LOVE trading technologies with people. I learn science and military technologies so fast but I bypass things like animal husbandry and others like that. Then I trade my low level technologies with them for the ones I bypassed. So they are still behind me, but I have got the rest ov the technologies. Make sense? It works for me

No food, no production, no coin... absolutely nothing to help out ur city what-so-ever. Just a blank worthless space, the desert. If you're ever gonna settle even close to a desert, make sure you have some rich squares like say.. Flood plains or somethings to make up for it.
