It's official. I've fallen in love. This song is absolutely amazing. I especially love the way he rolls his r's when he says "grenadine" and "straining". It's those little things that enhance this already fantastic masterpiece.
This song Is Donovan's master piece. He had many. But if his record label would have pulled their head out and gave us this song other then mellow yellow.
Donovan would be the most cherished musician ever. His body of work is just amazing.
This was originally aired on Belguim TV in the SECAM format and in Black and White only...making its way on old format VHS transferred from SECAM to NTSC it ended up in blue-ish tone, I have never seen a NON blue copy...and Live Concerts on video of Donovan from this period are extremely rare.
One of his best, get goosebumps every time I hear it. I love the sad story too. Cool to know that even though Donovan could and did get the hottest girls in the world, he was still capable of some damsel breaking his heart.
In a way, the poor picture quality makes it seem like this was beamed to us from some bluish paradise dimension where godlike beings once weaved pure magic in the form of divine musical sound and poetry. A dimension, might I add, that is now far, far, FAR away and gets farther every passing year.
Absolutely amazing vintage movies. Definitely should be archived somewhere. I was one of the lucky ones who saw him perform in Toronto Canada in 1969. Thinking about it still sends chills down my spine. One amazing man and performer. Sometimes I think he inhabits a plain we just might one day reach. Definitely going to be his last time through this existence.
My favorite folks songs are "Sand and Foam" by Donovan and "Pancho & Lefty" by Townes Van Zandt. Great, great song. The best song on the "Mellow Yellow" album.
Fantastic song and mood - his honesty throughout his life is unsurpassed; he beckoned ridicule and dared them to bring it on - meeting it with love, love, love! Queen Mab more like!
There's no way to describe how beautiful this song is or how much it means to me. This is an extraordinarily gorgeous video. What a gift to be able to see rarities like this and what a crime it will be if y-t takes them all down. THANK YOU for posting!
this tune popped my dono-cherry and that was it....my all time favorite donovan song and the quest to hear everything from this man from then on...great post!

John Mellencamp just ripped off this song for his "new" song "Someday the Rains Will Fall." At least he stole from the best.
