I came up with this last night, and thought I was a genius! Turns out I'm not. Haha. However, I came up with it less for the noise cancellation, and more for the comfort. Regular earbuds are far too uncomfortable in my ear when trying to sleep -- the harder plastic of the buds press against my hear with my head against the pillow, and it's just not an option. But replacing them with the ear plugs makes it much more comfortable -- plus, of course, the bonus noise cancellation.
good idea but i always thought that the standard rubber ear buds were part of the bass drive acting like a bass box so to speak with these noise reduction home made ones im sure thats exactly what theyd do and actually cancle the bass am i wrong or rite as ive not made a pair
@LITTLENICKSTA I found that the base was actually higher, and I had to adjust the EQ of my music accordingly to bring out the treble and turn down the bass a bit.
@NasseerBoss no you dont want to make the hole to big because it will slip out of the headphones small is good it focus the sound in one direction rather than everywhere thus limiting the amount of sound and lowering quality
THIS WORKS GREAT AND INCREASES THE BASS REALY WELL!!!!........IF YOU HAVE BEATS BY DR DRE......... OR BOSE.......... EARPHONES THEY MAKE THE BASS EVEN BETTER............
LMAO u remind me of the show Art Attack, how the guy always has one step done ebfore hand and just throws the old one and says, urs will turn out like "this" exept it never does for me =[
I tried this and it works great! Just make sure the hole you make is clean and as large as you can get it without the tip pulling out of the plug leaving the earplug in your ear. For my Skull Candy Ink'd earbuds that's about 4mm. Too small a hole or too ragged will affect sound quality very negatively. Also, get a big pack of plugs and make a few sets. You'll want to replace them at least weekly with heavy use. It's not an issue as the plugs are very cheap and can be found at any pharmacy.
@Nkristinadn Why, It improves the SQ and you can allways use the old Bud back on the earphone, Nothing changes on the earphone itself apart from the seal is much better, While we're on the subject apple in ears are not all that amazing, Check out Westone W4's they would blow your mind if you like apple buds lol :)
thank you for this! i have funny shaped ear canal..buds kept falling out all the time. this makes it a lot better..although i could make the hole better if i had the biopsy tool.
wish i'd seen this vid while on my dermatology rotation :(
OK, I tried your idea. I used a riveting tool that has a leather punch on its side to punch the hole. To speed up the inflating of the squeezed earplugs significantly, put them in a tall glass and blow hot air from a hairdryer on them until they have reached their original size.
The sound of the bass is not as good as with the original earbuds though.
@caustictruth@j0rzeh @joeelipo Foam tips including Comply Foam do not provide more isolation. They're designed for those who cannot get a good fit with normal silicone tips. In fact, because the material itself is so breathable it absorbs lows and highs leaving mids emphasized.
@Niyologist That's right. The bass APPEARS to be increased only when you use bass heavy earphones. However, if you use bass-less earphones you would want to switch to silicone tips to squeeze the last amount bass.
lol Lame, for 15$ you can get some Sentry noise canceling ear buds, and they work perfectly, unless you need Headphones or are a Rich prick who can't stand things less than 200$. :)
I have made these myself but using a slightly different technique. Instead of a cutting tool, I heated a nail over a flame and once it becomes hot enough, it will melt a perfect hole through the entire earplug. I used this setup while riding my motorcycle and can say it works extremely well. Obviously not professional grade but I was very impressed with the isolation as well as the retention in my ears. One big negative however...if these plugs get wet they are completely trashed.
Awesome. I was going to do a custom molded diy until trying this. I used a regular old paper punch to make the hole. My meelectorincs have never sounded or felt better!
Very analytical approach. I especially liked the sharpening of the mechanical pencil pusher. Brilliant. I was musing about modifying my foam earplugs for this purpose, but now it's a plan. Now the hard part -- finding the right pair of quality in-ear-headphones that don't cost a fortune. Thanks for sharing :-)
thats good but 1 thing if u remove the earbud out your ear that tip will stay in your ear & next thing you know your siting in the er room w/ the dr picking at your ear for this not to happen u would have to crazy glue the foam to the earbuds but maybe you dont want to do that either because there will be some time u will need to change the foam then you will spend time scraping the old crazy glue off to put more crazy glue on for the new tip stick with the tips & foams that came w/ your earbuds

Hi. clear video. I just have a question. When do press onto the orange ear plugs, why do you have to wait 2 weeks for it to spring back into its original shape?
Thanks for this video. I had a hard time getting a hole punched in, but used a crab fork to puncture and cuticle scissors to cut a small hole. Now I can listen to audiobooks fine on the subway without blasting my ears off.

Anyone think of anything to prevent this besides from using glue?
Actually, has anyone tried and tested this earbud thing and does this actually happen?
Thinking about it now I guess it wouldn't cause if you have to stretch the tip over the headphone then 'assuming it contracts quite tightly
