  • Fantastic song; good memories for good reasons...

    Thanks for sharing.

  • @Dukeofurlz

    Hey Duke

    you are welcome

    Hwaj5300

  • Before a concert at the Keswick Theater near Philly 5 or 6 years ago, Glen Campbell told me that he was one of the singers in the chorus of this song. I also know that he played a 6 string banjo on the Kingston Trio's single---------- Desert Pete. Why a 6 string and not a 5 string ?-----hey, I guess Glen can do what the heck he wants -being that he played with the BEACH BOYS------SONS OF THE PIONEERS---JIMMY WEBB------KINGSTON TRIO--ETC --ETC --ETC

  • @austingone

Don't forget the intro to Mama Tried By Merle Haggard. Done on a 12 String guitar (Or so I heard)

I did not know of all the stuff you informed me of So........

  • Harry! Just noticed the picture of the man at 1:25 looks a lot like Jim Santee when he was younger. Ha, ha!

  • @carann5

Hi Sis Love your new post by Marty although it is not my fav by him ...I have one I made called "Mr. Shorty" but never uploaded it as it is all movie clips from an old Cowboy picture....As far a looking like "Jim" you must have a picture of him that young because you or I are not old enough to remember then

    Love .....Harry

  • They don't make them like this any more... So much better than the tuneless dross on the radio these days.

  • @lizichell2

Amen....But do they still have Radios (LOL)

    Hwaj5300

  • One of the most played songs in Army Service Club #2 in Okinawa, 1962 - 63.

Great story song. Thanks for the mem'ries and the post.

  • @johnmorris008

Love story songs, and Thanks A Lot.....Means a lot to me to know others appreciate the same music I do.

    Hwaj5300

  • Believe it or not this is probably my favorite by this group, which leaned on a country flavor along with Johnny Cah above others. There was no contry station back in those days, so they played many country songs on pop radio but they didn't favoured much by us teeners at the time. This song was definetly not played in the school gym, along with the likes of Patsy, Johnny & Ned. They rode low on the local top 40 charts giving way to the maninstream rock & roll. Anyway this is a memory. THX

  • Sorry for so long in responding. Yes, Cash does good on both songs, namely Reverand Mister Black and Little Drummer Boy. I have Reverand Mister Black on a 33 record album titled, "Johnny Cash Biggest Hits.

  • This is one of your videos I must have missed, Harry! Good job with it. I have a question though. Did Johnny Cash do a version of this song or not?

  • @carann5

You know Carol..... If he did I do not know it ....as this was the hit I remember.

But i think another comment asked the same question .... or ......claims he did .

My videos pale in comparison to your as they are not that creative

    Thanks Harry

  • perfect!

  • @ERROLCUSTERFLYNN4EVR

    Thanks Errol

    Hwaj5300

  • This, this is my all time favorite Kingston Trio song!!! I first heard "The Reverend Mr. Black" song back in the 1960s on the radio. I was a teenage then. This song made an impact on how I should respond to those who might bully me. None have to date. No need to fight when words work just as well. My life has been fine for having thought this way.

I liked the video; the unicorn? not the essence of this song. You don't need mythical creatures to get through life; God's help suffices.

  • yes Hwaj 5300 this group was big with many hits like you stated mid 50's threw 65 their (dress & clothes set a big influnce & folk music) oppisite the leather jackett ducktale rock & roll image

  • this was a HUGE hit 45 for the trio & is the best version of all who recorded it CLASSIC thanks for posting

  • @willieraye

    Thanks Willie

    Agreed

    Hwaj5300

  • This spring i found an old Magnavox console stereo in the trash where i found an old beat up Kingston Trio #16 Lp inside. Ever since i listened to that Lp testing the console stereo ive been a fan!

  • Harry, that's a cool video. Those were the kind of impressions I always got when I heard that song. One of the Kingston Trio's best. Thanks for taking your time to put all that work into it!

  • i loved this song every cents i have ben a kid

  • @buddywheel1962

    Thanks... Me too.

    Hwaj5300

  • not to many people recognize john's voice here.but there he is.rip john.

  • This would have been good on GTA:SA K-Rose.

  • I'd give an arm by hearing -just hear!- "You want Chili Peppers" y this incredible group.

  • I found this song a year or two ago. I've searched and searched for it and finally found it. It may not be a gospel song as such but it gives me chills everytime I listen to it. Thank you so much for posting it!!!

  • @Loverboy721 my freind this was done by the kingston trio first then mr. cash had a big hit later , unless it just happened johnnys is not on here. im sittin here with the 45 in hand peace

  • Yeah thats right. I'm 30 years old and this song I will never forget.

I have my uncle to thank for that, for playing the *tape* while we headed up north in the great lakes to sail.

And I'm so glad he did.

  • Terrific group..RWB

  • Nice job Harry! You put a lot of work into it. Beautiful and appropriate pictures.

  • I got to walk that lonesome valley

I got to walk it by myself

oh no body else can walk it for me

I got to walk it by myself

True words of wizdom. No one will be holding your hand through life.

Take it from me i have been shot at(while in the military) yelled at punched, poor, and just had a rough life.

hey thanks for posting this song i heard it as a child.

  • @ReconAndRecovery God Bless you, these songs give me inpsiration

  • @jbdmed

Hey reconandelivery I fell I have been blessed although not rich I still feel it.

    Thanks

    Hwaj5300

  • motowngirl, I don't remember that Johnny Cash had a hit with this song. But it was a hit for theh Kingston Trio in 1963. It was one of my favorites back then.

Johnny Cash adopted all-black outfits and was known as The Man In Black but I don't remember that having any connection to this song.

  • I had this song on a 45 as a youth. It was from my parents collection and it was recorded by Johnny Cash. You can still get a copy on a collector albumn called Johnny Cash Biggest Hits. I'd sure like to see somebody post the copy on You Tube!

  • Nice job on the video! :c)

    Very best of wishes!

    GinMillBill

  • thanks ginmill bill

  • Intersting. The song I would be thinking of would have to be the 60's. I just thought it was a deeper voice than this. And I recall the background music a little different. Dang! I used to record all my songs on an old Webcor tape recorder - no longer have the recorder or the tapes.

  • Hey

Don't you just hate that..I am waiting for the version of windows come out that no longer recognizes the format of the usb memory sticks

  • This doesn't sound like the hit record I remember. Didn't Johnny Cash make a hit out of it?

  • Hi motowngirl65

I really do not know of johnny cash doing this.

This is the only version I know.

That is not to say there are no other versions it just that I don't them. This was the hit version from the early 60. it has most likely been remastered ... this usually means they have a good thing and they wish to mess it up a little

    Thanks for asking

    Hwaj5300

  • @hwaj5300 johnny cash did song called I walk the Line which had a similar beat, and john stewart's voice is reminiscent of Johnny Cash's, but Cash never did this song

  • @BLUESMANRONCHICAGO

Hey thanks blues man I try not to be too positive when answering questions as I still learn new stuff each day. I know Cash's version of I walk the line. But didn't want to lie to Motown girl.

    Appreciate the comment and thanks

    Hwaj5300

  • @hwaj5300 NO PROBLEM, I LEARN NEW STUFF EVERY DAY TOO, MUSIC IS MY PASSION, AND EVEN THOUGH MY FIRST LOVE IS THE BLUES, WHICH I SING AND PLAY, MY BEGINNINGS IN MUSIC WERE ROOTED IN FOLK SUCH AS THE KINGSTON TRIO, BROTHERS FOUR, PETER, PAUL AND MARY, AND OF COURSE, BOB DYLAN AND HIS BRITISH COUNTERPART, DONOVAN

  • @BLUESMANRONCHICAGO - Actually, Blues, Cash DID do this song - and a rockin' good slightly different version. It was around 1966 or three years after the KT - it was up on YouTube until fairly recently. I was surprised because I'd never heard JC do it, but it was unquestionably him. If it appears on YT again, I'll note that here.

  • @CompVid101 COOL, WOULD LOVE TO HEAR HIM DO IT, I ALSO GOT INTO JOHNNY'S MUSIC AROUND THE TIME I FIRST HEARD THE KT. HE ALWAYS WORE BLACK, SO DO I ON STAGE, WITH ONE EXCEPTION, A WHITE TIE. PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME I BROUGHT BACK THE BLUES BROTHERS LOOK, I APPEAR OFTEN AT MORSELAND, KINGSTON MINES, AND BUDDY GUY'S IN CHICAGO, SINGING AND PLAYING THE BLUES HARP

  • Comment removed

  • @BLUESMANRONCHICAGO

Johnny Cash covered this in 1982. You can hear a clip on iLike. Just Google "Reverend Mr Black Johnny Cash" ;)

  • @BLUESMANRONCHICAGO Johnny Cash did do this song. I have it on a record album.

  • @zinnia413

Never recognized LP cuts .......As it seems everybody did everything (if you know what I mean) Hit 45's made the album Sales This I believe was the only hit 45.....

    But I could be wrong

  • @hwaj5300-- I believe you're right. I think as well it was a hit 45, where-by Cash's was the song on an album.

  • @zinnia413

Because i like the song .....I feel I am missing out on something not hearing Cash's version..... AS I love Johnny's Sound....Best version of "little drummer boy" I can recall hearing was johnny's

    Thanks

    Hwaj5300

  • Where is here the Leadsinger?

  • The lead singer here is John Stewart (1939-2008), who replaced original member Dave Guard in 1961. This record was the third major hit by this second troupe of the Trio (Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, John Stewart - 1961-67) after "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?"(1962) and "Greenback Dollar" (1963).

  • Hi Compvid101

Is that the same "john stewart" who had a hit called "gold"?

  • Hi back hwaj - and thanks for uploading this KT classic.

Yes, it is the same john Stewart of "Gold." - He also wrote the Monkee's hit "Daydream Believer" and Roseanne Cash's hit "Runaway Train."

  • The Kingstons' first Billboard chart record was "Tom Dooley" in September 1958. They had unsuccessfully released "Scarlet Ribbons/Three Jolly Coachmen" earlier that year.

  • Thanks for that

  • Thanks--I teach Church History and this song perfectly recaptures the spirit of the Methodist and Baptist Circuit Riders, mostly dead at 29. Been called "Christian Lone Rangers" and a vital part of The Churching of America from 1800 to 1840,or The Second Great Awakening.

Texans say, "There's no one out tonight except crows and Methodist preachers." I sent this to my class so thanks very much from a lifelong Kingston Trio fan--definitely early 1960s.

  • I don't think the Kingston Trio hit until c.1960. I could be wrong, but 1955 is way too early.

  • Very nice job on the video

  • An old favorite!

  • Really great! And long live also Billy Edd Wheeler, the co-writer!

  • Very nice! It's been years since I heard anything by them. Good job with video.
