  • This ship was truly the Titanic of the United States. They just dont make ships the way they used to. Compare this to the.. blasphemous floating sky scrapers of today and.. theres just no comparison, I wish wed go back to the way these ships were made, modernize the engines but keep the old looks. Its a pitty these old steamers arnt used anymore and are just sold for scrap like theyre nothing

  • @MrBlackdemon90 You said everything for me! Go see about the MS Augustus too!

    She's curently getting scrapped :(

Long live the old Ocean Liners!

  • My parents came over to the United States on the SS United States! Watch their video at LadyRider2007 - Gertrude Sandor's life Story - Thank you :)

  • Although she is a beautiful ship, I very much doubt the SS United States is "the crowning maritime achievement of the twentieth century".

  • When my Dad came back from Korea, he was stationed at Ft. Eustis, VA and we WATCHED the United States being built. When we came back from his deployment in Germany in '56, we came home on her, first class. VERY impressive!! I hope she's saved for future travel. I for one, would be on her.

  • Tugboat??? Are you kidding me?

  • Should be fully restored and docked in NYC. It'd be nice to have the United States on the East Coast and the Queen Mary on the West Coast.

  • Remember that $1.4 or $1.41 Trillion we printed a couple of years ago? Why couldn't a few mil. go to the SS UNITED STATES. That is who we are! We don't need another road to anywhere! The SS United States is 2nd only to the Bill Of Rights.

  • Screw jackvid ! She should be restored and put back in service I would love to work on her.

  • i reckon scrap it get a few coke cans outta it

  • I LOVE SHIPS >> But sadly I think it's to big a job to undertake on a no budget income.. It would take millions of dollars to clean it and paint it..

It would also have to be dry docked --unless you want to refurbish it from the waterline up and leave the bottom to rust.. Replacing the lifeboats would cost alot.. AND even if you get it painted ,the interior has been gutted .. Is to big a job with no money...

  • shes safe in the Delaware River <3, just saw her yesterday...so beautiful

  • I worked in a high rise from Detroits Glory days. They sold it for what it cost to build in 58 and gutted it even though my dad and eventualy me kept it mint

  • hey her sister has sunk shes had a good history reuse her as a state of the art cruise ship or a museum she is not junk shes only like thta because people left her to rot she won the blue riband for crying out loud SAVE HER SAVE HER I AGREE WITH kattsmarie thankyou her siater the ss america or americain star broke free of her tow ropes years ago and was left to rot she finally sank and her memory lives on

  • hey her sister has sunk shes had a good history reuse her as a state of the art cruise ship or a museum she is not junk shes only like thta because people left her to rot she won the blue riband for crying out loud SAVE HER SAVE HER I AGREE WITH kattsmarie thankyou

  • When I was a trainee at US Lines in 1984, this ship was right outside my window at the Norfolk International Terminal in Norfolk Va. This was before Philadelphia. this ship deserves better, but I am afraid nobody will ever pony up the money to do much with her.

  • I saw this amazing ship today when i went down to philly with my family. My brother complained how i obsessed over a stupid ship like this. But to me she is the most beautiful ship i have ever seen. A shame how not many know who she is. I would love to go see her again soon.

  • i picked up a load right under it once. such a beautiful, yet sad site.

  • be proud of their nation and not to be concerned with their facebook or twitter status and to actually care about the largest democratic nation in the world. as much as it pains me to say it greed corruption and cultural collapse has made the mighty US of A a shadow, of our once glorious self may you all understand what I have sadi and maybe do your part to restore our lost glory.

  • this once great titan is like a protector a legacy forgotten by her people modern americans don't care about things like this. people today think of ships as cruise ships and the only famous ocean liner everyone knows is titanic if only because she sank on her first voyage. america needs to wake up and reclaim it's lost history and so that we can be the nation everyone once turned to for help because they knew we would because are children and our childrens children where taught to

  • @RapidFyrez i agree

  • they are thinking about putting a restraunt on her

  • One has to wonder what, besides ignorance, fuels the SS US preservation movement. This ship was never, ever a great liner, her sole claim to fame was her speed, and her looks were only skin deep. Inside she was all metal and so dreadfully mid-century that she barely had a career. When this ship was struggling, the second Ile de France was hot property.

Today, the last of the truly great liners, the Queen Mary--with all her elegance struggles. The SS US hasn't got a chance.

  • @Gryphonalia and yet many wealthy people chose her over the queens and their was a reason for the metal. she was designed to be capable of being changed to a troop transport and the metal was meant to keep the ship as safe as can be from a shipboard fire it is so sad to see americans not know about their legacy and let so much great history of innovation and hardwork just die

  • this country once was. This ship reminds us of who and what we once were. Skilled, proud, fearless and strong.......the strength of a nation. Greed must destroy this ship, the Wealthy have no need of that memory. I look at her and it hurts me to remember. For the propagadist that pain makes his work easy.

  • willing swallow from the propagandist. This ship no longer serves the Bussines Class it once served so well. To them, she is the enemy. This great ship is a memory of a partnership between the Working Class and the Wealthy. Greed killed this ship. Why pay a living wage in America when any 3rd world worker can be paid next to nothing for the same labor. This ship says to me when I pass her "I am great, I am you, don't let me die." I have the book and the vid, I will never forget how great

  • This great ship must die. It is a memory of what a great nation at one time could build. A nation that once built everything it needed and after that built everything the world needed. This ship is symbolic of a nations manufacturing strength. That strength is gone now, sold to other countrys for profit. A Skilled Working Class Army was needed to turn raw steel into art you see before you. That Army is gone now, a memory. This Ship, this history of us, does not serve the propaganda we so

  • They should restore this and RMS Queen Mary to their former glory and let them sail the seas once again. It couldn't be that hard, as for the RMS Queen Mary at least. Just do some fixing, reattach propellors in her and get new engines for her. And ready to sail. I don't know what the SS United States has been stripped off, so I don't know what besides new engines and fixing her to seaworthy condition she will need, but those two are greay ships, that need to be restored immediately!

  • @ARSA525 The Queen Mary i doubt it but c'mon the SS United States was a beautiful ship the pride of the nation fastest in 1952 is lucky she still afloat till these days it should be preserved like a treasure invest money in her put it back to the glorious days when she won the blue riband dont use it as an hotel or let her rott put her back in service it can be done even if it cost a lot is totally worth it

  • @Sticktallic There is no way she will see service again. That time has passed and the cost would be insane! Unless she was completely retrofitted to modern specifications, she would not even pass her first sea trial. Plus the lack of individuals today interested in a vintage voyage would never be profitable enough to run her. Insurance alone kills that hope. A Queen Mary future is the best you can hope for. Simple fact. And it would be luck if and money if even that happens. But I hope so. ;)

  • would look fantastic all fixed up and painted. very American. this is one of the very last transatlantic passenger liners in existence , to junk her would be a crime, she should be a museum of the era of transatlantic voyages among other things.

    @restomanas

those ships were scrapped decades ago. olympic was scrapped in the 30s. they are well and truly gone, but the SSUS is not yet.

  • In case anyone has not been watching... The SS United States Conservancy has purchased the ship. She has been saved from the breakers.

  • @devildoc225 PLEASE understand that while the Conservancy has taken title to the ship, she is BY NO MEANS saved. She remains very much in PERIL. The Lenfest Grant provides for only 20 months of maintenance and dockage, so now is the time when a workable future must be secured. This will obviously take money. To learn how you can help, please visit ssunitedstatesconservancyDOTorg.

  • why they not save a R.M.S Olympic or aquitania. very sad.

  • @beenthere1run And we say you have no sense of history!

  • @bigshipfilms Thanks for posting this video! It was great! I hear if we don't do anything she will go to Arab, India for another scrapping attempt.

  • @beenthere1run FUCK YOU.

  • @beenthere1run that ship is your nations most important ship!

  • @beenthere1run D: Its not Junk

  • @beenthere1run you do realize this ship was the pride of the US merchant fleet and still holds the legendary blue ribbon for being an incredibly fast ship.

  • @beenthere1run wow, you must be messed up in the head if you want to scrap this piece of history.

  • This ship is called the SS UNITED STATES, to let her rot is like the burning of the American Flag! My Mother and Father came over from Europe in 1955 to Start a new life in N.J. my mother traveled back on the SS America to europe to bring back my Grandparents after 2 yrs and sailed once again on the SS UNITED STATES , after looking to see where the SS AMERICA is today i sadly found videos of her on youtube rotting on the beach off the coast of Africa ! That ship was also part of the U.s lines!

  • too bad she wasnt a wall street bankers ship or barack would have bailed her out too

  • Bring her to ireland we will look after her.

  • @XXXXXPegasusXXXXX Thanks! But you guys are as BROKE over there as we are from the trouncing at the hands of the criminal banksters! Seriously this is a grand ship but she was completely gutted back in the 80s and she's just a hulk now with turbine engines that burn THOUSANDS of gallons of fuel per day. It was built with financing by the U.S. Gov't as a possible fast troop carrier. America has had its greatness STOLEN from her by World Bank hijackers just like Ireland, Greece, Iceland, etc.

  • u get me emot

ional about the ss america, don let her end up in india like the ss norway

  • News broke last week about finances in regards to restoring this ship as a floating casino in South Philly in partnership with the Foxwoods casino. After losing the Spectrum this week, I hope this plan comes together. With USS New Jersey across the river in Camden, and this Gem sitting just a few hundred yards away fully restored, it would be truly amazing.

  • Why do you not ask the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation for helping saving this greatest ship of all?

    Main Office

    PO Box 23350

    Seattle, WA 98102

    (206) 709-3100

  • Please please dont scrap this world unique naval monument!!!

I am german but I hope and pray that you

the great american people are able to collect some money for saving and restoring this

lady. Remember JFK, try to achieve the hard goals, not the easy ones!

If possible make some kind of Big U restoration foundation.

    I will give some money!!

  • i would like to shout im the king of the world on that ship

  • I saw this ship on a field trip to Philadelphia in 8th grade. I didn't know who she was at the time but she made such an impression on me driving by at the time, I was only able to take one picture. Only yesterday did I find out her name and who she was and is. I am saddened to see her like this, knowing that her sister ship is gone as well. It would be a national shame to watch her sink to the bottom because of neglect.

  • The American Star was the SS America. Sadly, she is gone. Wrecked off the Canary Islands after breaking tow and, as of 2008 nothing visible is left of her. At least a more fitting end to see her given up to the sea rather than broken on a beach in India.

  • i have seen her the first time when she was in norfolk in the late 1980's. well, i'm german but to see her in such condition now makes me cry. everything possible and impossible should be done to save this piece of art and history!

  • It would be a great idea for a volunteer organization to form and get the word out nationally. Out of 310 million people, at least a couple thousand would sign up to contribute to her restoration.

  • I also would like them to save the SS America and the SS American Star.. one of which was shipwrecked (when?)

  • damnn i remember the first time i saw this shit just cruising around now its like wtf?

  • My grandpas friend bought that ship in the 90s and later sold all the valubales inside.....ya he was Canadian and got around 16 m.

My aunt got a tour and said it was amazing

    She said

  • It would be great to see her sail again, but with all the asbestos and lead paint on her to clean up, before she could be restored, the cost would be great.

  • what an amazing ship. hope the u.s. restore this trans-atlantic liner I've liked this ship sinds I first heard about it on the Discovery channel and I'm from Aruba. So sad

  • my dad was third mate on her. they called him the whale killer because they hit a whale when he was on duty . my sister has the galley chopping block-one of only two wooden objects on board.we had a lot of postcards and photo serrated edged glue up leetergrams as well at home.he used to get the chef to put aside 2 lobsters from the catch at cobh for him .

  • I came to this country aboard her when I was around 3 years old. My parents crossed the ocean on her 3 times. My father was very proud to have been a passenger. This fine ocean liner is a national treasure. It is a shame to see it rusting away. It should be preserved for sake of history. Talk about a shovel ready project.

OBAMA.... RESTORE THE PRIDE OF AMERICA

RESTORE THE SS UNITED STATES !!!

  • too bad obama is totally ignoring this and prefers to spend money trying to "change" things which isn't working too well for him

  • We had family that rode this ship

  • our ss roterdam is already bin saved now the beyoutiful ss united states!

  • our ss roterdam is already bin saved now the beyoutiful ss united states, dont forget her america, she deserves respect!

  • our ss roterdam is already bin saved now the beyoutiful ss united states, dont forget her america, she deserves respect!

  • our ss roterdam is already bin saved now the beyoutiful ss united states, dont forget her america, she deserves respect!

  • If they opened her up to the public as a tourist attraction, the SS United States could become a major draw to the Philadelphia waterfront, in the way that the USS New Jersey has established herself across the river in Camden. Imagine a fine restaurant or a hotel on board. If the authorities in Philly had a little more foresight, they would raise the funds to restore her and reap the benefits of having such a beautiful piece of maritime history alongside Philadelphia's other historic treasures.

  • I'm curious. Just rough gussing, would anyone reading this care to estimate much would it take to reactivate the United States? Would the ship be able to accomodate 21st century technology such as computer systems and engine upgrades? We put men on the moon before the end of the 60's, I don't see any reason why the United States can't sail again before the end of the 2010's!

  • I think if she was moved to New York then people would notice her more if u guys know wat i mean

  • My parents came to this country on this ship!

  • It was reported in March 2010 that scrapping bids for the ship are being collected. Norwegian Cruise Lines, in a press release, noted that there are large costs associated with keeping United States afloat in her current state—around $800,000 a year—and that, as the SS United States Conservancy has not been able to tender an offer for the ship, the company was actively seeking a "suitable buyer

  • I managed to get a ship's large Bath Towel and Chrome Towel Hanger from 1st Class SS America.

  • I have contacted the White House with a long message, I hope they get involved to save this ship!

  • Wonder what sort of condition it is in inside?

  • It's completely gutted.

  • It is too late :(

I heard already they going to sell the ship like Titanic's sistership Olympic for scrap. We must save this ship now!

  • According to Maritime Matters the ship is being inspected by scrap merchants and the current owner is collecting bids from scrappers. I wonder if this time a ship can be saved from the scrappers, as recently many preservation efforts (SS Norway, GTS Finnjet) have failed and the ships have been scrapped.

  • The first time I saw this magnificent ship was in in 1971 when she was docked in Norfolk, VA. I fell in love with her at first sight and always will be in love with her. I've never set foot about but if she is ever recommissioned I would take the opportunity to sail with her. She is not forgotten, but a waiting.

  • this is a forgotten ship, this is why it won't be restored or made into a hotel, it was americas best attempt at an ocean liner and apart from being the fastest it wasn't the biggest and it wasn't the best, there is no worldwide interest in this ship unlike the queen mary and QE2, If they could make money in any way with this ship someone would have done so already.

I do hope it doesn't get scrapped though and it is good that it still survives to this day.

  • I think that the S.S. United States is a trruuee example of a real ocean liner. If you would like sleekless and performance of a cruise ship, her existance alone fits those descriptions. I would love to see her restored again. It would be a pleasure seeing something beautiful rather than seeing bunch of boxed-up hotels called cruise ships of today.

  • Beautiful thanks for sharing

  • I want to buY her, and fix her up! Dream on GPA

  • its just sitting on Columbus blv

  • Putting her back to sea is a pipe-dream and has been for years. SOLAS regulations have become so strict that the Big U would have to undergo massive structural changes that would render her all but unrecognizable, and what would be the point of that, then? The best one can hope for, (and it's something everyone should get behind rather than relying on NCL or some other line to put her back to sea) is to convert her in essentially the same way as the Queen Mary, stationary museum/hotel ship.

  • oh it make's you want to cry ,how could they neglect her like that,I hope and pray ,she will be saved

  • @kattsmarie, I just read the USS conservancy bought her and it will be restored. Most likely to a hotel/resort with restaurants and a casino. It also said it could be moved to NY or Miami. Lets hope it stays in Philly=)

  • @kattsmarie, PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SHIP HAS NOT BEEN SAVED. Her future is by no means secure at this point. The Lenfest grant only provides enough funds to dock and maintain the vessel for 20 months--less than two years--during which time the funding must be raised to ensure that the Big U is in fact saved for posterity. Please visit ssunitedstatesconservancyDOTorg to learn how you can help preserve this irreplaceable national treasure.

  • @kattsmarie she has been saved :)

  • @kattsmarie

    Well look at SS America.

  • The Ship is Beautiful ,if i lived there ,i'd be involved like everyone else trying to Save her

  • ame to all the comments ans amen totally,

the United states should have a commitee to bring her back and redo her into her origianl splendor like she once was,

    we cant

ALOW HER TO JUST DECAY Away and forget her like some others thast have had that poor history,

I thought there wasa a comittee to save her and get all the asbestos out of her and then redo her like she was, and to let people see the last of the great liners as shes supposwed to look,

  • how many bajillions of dollars would it take to restore this thing? It used to creep me out when I would see it from the road next to it leaving Phila, so depressing to see a big old ship just dying in a dock that people seem to have forgotten about

  • they sure don't make them like that anymore. i hope she's not scrapped.

  • I live in Thailand and i know more about SS United States than most americans. Dont let this great ship go to waste. Atleast restore her and make her into a hotell in New York or something.

Fastest cruise ship to this date and one of the most beautiful ever built.

  • idk y we treat the queen mary like royalty and we treat the ss united states like crap the ss united states is our ship and will always be our ship, we cant just let it sit there and rot

  • This was the first love of my life. I was a passenger on her in 1962 and will never forget the joy she brought to a young child's heart. We went from New York to La Harve France in 5 days. I love you baby, come back to us.

  • @PcolaSteve4234 Are you by chance part of the foundation or conservancy?

  • This is the first lady I ever loved. I was a passenger on her from New York to La Harve France in 1962; that is where I fell in love. I have a cast iron model of her in my living room which I got aboard her. I love you baby and will never forget the happiness you brought to me as a child.

  • What really annoys me is that, the Queen Mary was British, but now she's taken care of by America. The United States is every bit as beautiful & worthy of respect, so why just let her sit & rust? (I'm British by the way), but this is just wrong!!!

  • I AGREE!!!

  • SS United States should be fully restored and moored permenently somewhere. It will provide many jobs. It can never be scrapped. Along with RMS Queen Mary, it's a symbol of a golden age of transport. It's heartbreaking to see SS United States rusting away doing nothing.

  • A foreigner opinion:

America is made of emblems. Its a nation built above idealistic principles which have been the fuel of this american dream. And the SS United States is a symbol of how great America once was.

It cannot go away. It doesn't deserve this ungrateful fate, mainly also because it carries the country's name.

    WAKE UP AMERICA!

Don't allow your symbols to die. Please!

  • One of my favorite documentaries!

  • The ship is sinds 2004 property of Norwegian Cruise Line.

  • she must be saved!

  • maybe it can turn into a ship like the word where people can buy cabines an then the ship can drive around the world. such a great ship have to save!

  • Too bad they cant put her in the Smithsonian and use the interiors as exihibit/museum space.

  • Sister ship of the S.S American star, look it up.

  • to bad they dont float a bond and turn her in into a hotel like the queen mary

  • I was the youngest passenger on the maiden voyage from Southampton to New york. I still have the menu! We waited outside of the Statue of Liberty in international waters for one day waiting to be let ashore. I hope she gets put back into service again.

  • Apparently this is getting aired on some PBS stations. It needs to get aired in the pacific northwest. If not, then it needs to be made available on Netflix

  • Beautiful shippp......WHYDO PEOPLE FORGET THAT THIS SHIP WAS THE ONLY SHIP IN THE WORLD TO HAVE LASTEST SAFETY FEATURE IN THE 50S AND WON THE FASTEST SHIPS IN THE WORLD SAVE THE SHIIIIPPPP!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • slim, fast and beautiful-and not as fat and ugly as todays cruise ships.this ship deserves to be saved.

  • relly sad and norwegian cruise lines own her and i think it should be put back in service

  • what is teh name of the song i want to make a tribute to our pride our nations flagship.

  • SAVE HER!!!!!!!!! The loss of the Norway was so saddening, I hate to see it happen to our nation's great flagship. If I were one of the guys in DC, just seeing this trailer would make me want to get he government to save her.

    Restore her, maybe?

  • "It look like a lil tug boat" Had me laughing on the floor in tears.

  • my great grandma and granpa were on that ship when they came to America

  • See its stories like yours that make the big U more than just a ship sher has stories about her and the embodiment of the American spirit. We must preserve her to keep that feeling of our pride in being Americans.

  • The SS should be saved for her historical value to us Americans. She is one of the most wonderful ships in the world. I would hate for them to scrap her or she ends up like the American Star.

If f anyone would like to know there is a conservancy to save the SS united states. They take donations.

  • where can I watch this movie?

  • She needs to be saved! Tallshipdreamer makes a great point of it. People spend billions on stupid stuff! Americas Proudest Maritime Achievement Needs To Be Saved!!!

  • We truly only still have the QM1, Nomadic, QEII, ans Unites States lets with us, half of thoose are in danger of being lost.

    SAVE THEM!!!

  • I have a triang minic ship model of her, and that caused em to investigate more into her. I love the design of her. I wish she would be saved. So much sleeker and more beautiful than the big tub like the QM2 today.

  • if we can pay millions to see what Cow flatulence does to global warming. We can come up for some tax money to buy her back and restore her.

  • I would like to see her preserved as a museum. We have preserved many of our great and beautiful warships, we need to do the same for our last remaining ocean liner and the last example of Mr. Gibbs work.

  • hopefully she will sail again.

  • hopefully i will make a ship in honor of the ss united states in fact i will bring her back

  • A ship like this is too good for the scrapyards. We lost the SS NORWAY, let's not lose this lovely liner of the past.

  • we lost the s.s. independence to

  • on a ship youre with god if she sinks you sink

  • good job

  • I hope this documentary will lead to her preservation. There are so few ocean liners left today, she shouldn't be lost

  • I really hope this movie will make people more aware of how important it is to save this beautiful ship. I hope people will pay more attention to this great ocean liner and that she will be saved and turned into a hotel or museum. I know NCL is not going to do that, because of what they've done with the Norway and Independence. But I still hope someone else will. It would be terrible if she is lost. It's so sad. She deserves so much better

  • I hope she is either returned to service or better yet becomes a musuem. She deserves much better.

  • WOW, what a great ship !!

  • One can Dream, one can Dream

I pray that at the very very least, she remains laid up longer. I would rather she be laid up for another 20 years then scrapped.

Congress seems to have little interest, their busy spending money in Iraq

What really needs to happen is some one who cares about the ship needs to hit the lotto, or convince Bill Gates or Donald Trump to save and operate her

  • The problem is, as will107 demonstrates so clearly, is a clear understanding as to what is involved in bringing a ship like this back into service. How wonderful to bitch and complain and hang your hopes onto a pipedream like Trump. Of course will107 continues to hang his litany of complaints against NCL ont he lack of interest. The project, active or stagnant, is a massive financial undertaking. Even more so in this fossil fuel/materials cost enviroment.

  • I hoping this film will get the attention of Congress and all the people of the United States and be restored to her formal glory and National pride.
