@KatherineXIX - Simply because Schiotz and certain other singers could make their interpretations WORK, even at quick tempos. Every inflection and tone is secure, and the entire aria benefits from NOT taken at a languid pace .. using the discipline of Schiotz and orchestra in the best manner/way, possible. .. Opinions only.
@jhb134 It's NOT really an opinion thing, though - Mozart wanted this "andante cantabile," and this is at least allegretto. It just sounds rushed, like they want to get the aria over with as quickly as possible. I'm all for avoiding "languid" tempi, but not this far in the other direction. It's a shame, because he has a beautiful voice and most likely the breath control to take it at the tempo Mozart specified.
@KatherineXIX - I see your point, Katherine ... but I don't think a slower tempo would've gained anything. Possibly, Schiotz's bright, sharp intonation might seem too drawn-out, at the slower tempo. I'm just glad to have this example of the Dane, in anything! He's still sorely missed, after half a century.
I have only just discovered this amazing man and his wonderful voice. Superb rendition of this lovely aria. My favorite as well as Luigi Alva. Thanks for posting.
No one phrases this aria as elegantly as Shiotz. He embodies the Mozartian ideal. He doesn't hang on high notes with Italian bravado. He lets the beauty of the music come through him (instead of the opposite). This is a byproduct of his lied singing (which was his forte).
This was a very modern singing in the 30-ies! (no wonder Britten took him to his opera company.)Isn´t he cute too? That mischiveous look in his eyes! (Danes generally have a lot of humour.) They ought to translate his memoirs into English! (only Scandinavians can read them.)
I grew up listening to Schiotz singing Schubert lieder but I'd never heard him in any other music so this is a delight for me. Refined, unforced, elegant production and phrasing. Thank you. I also just enjoyed his Un aura amorosa-it was exquisite.
Beautiful, but too fast!

Tempo is too fast...this piece needs to breathe, to unfold like a flower.
