im just starting middle school but i want one thats under 900 bucks (Saw hp envy gaming edition for $850). So Im not a serious pc gamer, but i want something that runs pretty fast and can handle most games
I'm surprised that Mac fans are not going nuts right now, especially about the looks. When you put it side by side, I honestly think it looks tottally different. The envy looks way better. Mac fans always resort to the looks and price. Personally, I can't see the similarities. as for the price, if you want to spend more money for the logo( because that's all your paying extra for), it's your money. Face it mac, there are other companies besides apple and they are buildig better machines as well

@dhoomeslice96 Macs have sandy bridge now, and the Intel graphics work pretty damn well. Considering I'm not a gamer of course, but I am MUCH more happier with my MacBook Pro than I ever did with ANY PC in the past 10 years.

@HiMyNameIsMaria Incredibly good. With a fast dual core or quad core, 4-6-8gb od DDR3 RAM, and a GDDR3 1gb Graphics card, it will have no problem with any games you throw at it.

I am a lifelong windows user, but I am considering whether to buy this or the macbook pro for several reasons. And besides, macs can run windows, and don't say that I have to pay, I dont care, I can afford it.
lol cpu whine? it's the fan... cpu's can't make that sound... trust me if you get the desktop version of your processor it's not gonna make that sound unless you also have a shitty fan that whines at low speed... i have high cfm fans in my case and they make all kinda weird sounds at low rpm's.
@Helldiv3rr or buy the macbook for its superior build quality, keyboard, trackpad, battery life, os, looks, customer support and accessories. the performance boost of the envy is sort of nullified by the fact windows isn't as resource efficient as osx. you pay a premium for the best product, although i would agree apple can be very lavish with their product branding.
@MrPrivatewiggles I'll give you keyboard and OS, but that's all Macbook has OVER the HP Envy.
The performance boost is far from nulified, sure Windows is a lot less efficient (yes Microsoft, stop making crap and get your heads together) but really, quad-core i7 vs duo core? That's a pretty one-sided comparison. Even more so in the graphics department where Envy 14 and 15 and 17 beat their Macbook competition, if you want the same performance from the MB be prepared to pay $500-600 more.
@Helldiv3rr Furthermore, if you look at the new 13" its now got one of the new i5s at 2.3 as standard. And the intel 3000 graphics are surprisingly powerful. Yes, the envy is still a better performer, but the margin may be smaller than you perhaps think. Oh yeah, and the trackpads way better on the macbook, at least in my experience. And I would agree macbooks do have a stupidly expensive premium, but for me its worth it.
@MrPrivatewiggles The build quality is same, and I'll criticize HP here a bit because they copied a bit of the MB design, this just gives Apple fanboys something else to rant on about. Battery life wise, just like for the HP envy 15 I'm sure that HP will be releasing a slim-fit battery for the 14, extending battery life up to a total 7-8 hours. Speculations only but definitely a possibility. What Apple states on their website about 7 hours battery life, sure, if you have it running no programs
@Helldiv3rr This is excellent. For once my deliberately controversial comments haven't led to a fanboy flame war, and for that I thank you. In many cases I would genuinely agree with your statements, but there are perhaps a few weak points. Firstly, I guess you could get an increased capacity battery, but that's not standard, and will push the price up. And apple put the battery life down to make it more realistic. Simply just internet browsing with low brightness I can easily get 10 hours.
@MrPrivatewiggles Battery always seems to be an issue with Windows laptops. It's the price you pay for picking an open operating system, but to me, its worth it ;)
Honestly, in Envy vs MB the main factor will be personal preference not computer specs, I just went for envy because to me being an open system is THE most important part of devices, exactly the reason why I went for a Galaxy S instead of iPhone 4. And let's not forget that plenty of people have tight budgets on PCs.

I've got a gaming pc with windows 7 on, and a macbook pro with osx on, and both perform well, although it seems to me the macbook is faster, even if the specs say otherwise. And yes, the fact that windows is more open is excellent, and i do miss some of the software and games which are not to be found on osx. i'm fortunate to have the best of both worlds. oh yeah i used to have a nexus one, but ended up preferring the iphone 4. i'm going apple crazy haha
@doomtomb3 buy the new mac book pros. they have the new i5 chips in them which the envy 14 doesnt have. if i remember correctly, only the 17" envy have the new "i" chips. hopefully hp updates their envy 14 line with the 2nd gen if chips soon

The next thing is I will admit Apple's prices suck! but their product is superb. My MBP was supposed to be 1500 dollars but I got it for 850 because it was an open box deal at best buy. If your gonna get an apple don't buy it brand new but even though Apple's prices aren't great HP did not have to copy their product, that is my only issue.

i have a dv6t, which is designed like the envy. another build issue it the top has a gap and that the bottom top cover is uneven with the bottom. but either way, these computers rock.

could you tell me if the mini DispayPort on your Envy 14 still works fine, mine never worked, The HP helpdesk in The Netherlands as well in the US, told me there are issues known with the mDP, but no one can tell me how long it will take to resolve it.

You probably figured this out already... but right click the desktop>click screen resolution>click on the display labeled "2">then change the resolution to 1080.
@cml4456 yes I have figured it out more than 2 months ago, but it not like you said, I've already set the display in 1080p. I have to config the scaling option on the Catalyst setting on max level, by default it just set on about 2/3.
@kalibrador I firgured it out long ago, you have to go to catalyst control center (right click on desktop, Graphics Properties) while you are connect to the external monitor, on the top left menu, chose Desktop and Display, on the lower screen that have a icon for your monitor, press the down arror, chose Confirgure, next you chose Scaling Options and move the scale to get your screen display all over your monitor :)
does it have lightscribe? i'm not sure because the hp dm4 did not specify it had lightscribe, and it actually had it. i think all new hp laptops have it. also, how does the weight feel compared to that macbook u have there...

@Helldiv3rr or buy the macbook for its superior build quality, keyboard, trackpad, battery life, os, looks, customer support and accessories. the performance boost of the envy is sort of nullified by the fact windows isn't as resource efficient as osx. you pay a premium for the best product, although i would agree apple can be very lavish with their product branding.

@MrPrivatewiggles I'll give you keyboard and OS, but that's all Macbook has OVER the HP Envy.
The performance boost is far from nulified, sure Windows is a lot less efficient (yes Microsoft, stop making crap and get your heads together) but really, quad-core i7 vs duo core? That's a pretty one-sided comparison. Even more so in the graphics department where Envy 14 and 15 and 17 beat their Macbook competition, if you want the same performance from the MB be prepared to pay $500-600 more.

@Helldiv3rr Furthermore, if you look at the new 13" its now got one of the new i5s at 2.3 as standard. And the intel 3000 graphics are surprisingly powerful. Yes, the envy is still a better performer, but the margin may be smaller than you perhaps think. Oh yeah, and the trackpads way better on the macbook, at least in my experience. And I would agree macbooks do have a stupidly expensive premium, but for me its worth it.

@MrPrivatewiggles The build quality is same, and I'll criticize HP here a bit because they copied a bit of the MB design, this just gives Apple fanboys something else to rant on about. Battery life wise, just like for the HP envy 15 I'm sure that HP will be releasing a slim-fit battery for the 14, extending battery life up to a total 7-8 hours. Speculations only but definitely a possibility. What Apple states on their website about 7 hours battery life, sure, if you have it running no programs

@Helldiv3rr This is excellent. For once my deliberately controversial comments haven't led to a fanboy flame war, and for that I thank you. In many cases I would genuinely agree with your statements, but there are perhaps a few weak points. Firstly, I guess you could get an increased capacity battery, but that's not standard, and will push the price up. And apple put the battery life down to make it more realistic. Simply just internet browsing with low brightness I can easily get 10 hours.

@MrPrivatewiggles Battery always seems to be an issue with Windows laptops. It's the price you pay for picking an open operating system, but to me, its worth it ;)
Honestly, in Envy vs MB the main factor will be personal preference not computer specs, I just went for envy because to me being an open system is THE most important part of devices, exactly the reason why I went for a Galaxy S instead of iPhone 4. And let's not forget that plenty of people have tight budgets on PCs.

I've got a gaming pc with windows 7 on, and a macbook pro with osx on, and both perform well, although it seems to me the macbook is faster, even if the specs say otherwise. And yes, the fact that windows is more open is excellent, and i do miss some of the software and games which are not to be found on osx. i'm fortunate to have the best of both worlds. oh yeah i used to have a nexus one, but ended up preferring the iphone 4. i'm going apple crazy haha

@doomtomb3 buy the new mac book pros. they have the new i5 chips in them which the envy 14 doesnt have. if i remember correctly, only the 17" envy have the new "i" chips. hopefully hp updates their envy 14 line with the 2nd gen if chips soon

Hello Sir. I noticed you like to get down on SC II... Do you think this Envy 14 runs Starcraft 2 at a high level? I also play on a 23in external display via HDMI. Would I be able to use this Envy 14 on my 1080p display at Ultra settings with the baseline core i5 processor? Or maybe just high settings? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

I can't stand this stupid envy 14, because it is a cheap wannabe copy of the macbook pro. Like I said though it is CHEAP! minidisplay? glossy screen? Unibody type structure? This computer is just a sad excuse for a macbook pro. Get an apple they will treat you better!!!

@kevinmsft I totally understand bro. But my main issue is that, hp didn't have to go and copy Apple and there is no denying that copied apple so bad. The next thing is I will admit Apple's prices suck! but their product is superb. My MBP was supposed to be 1500 dollars but I got it for 850 because it was an open box deal at best buy. If your gonna get an apple don't buy it brand new but even though Apple's prices aren't great HP did not have to copy their product, that is my only issue.

i enjoy seeing the mac users trying to explain how much better mac is.....in reality....PC is technically better (not being biased)....i will admit that the mac OS is better but u guys fail to see that the OS can be put into PC's too (not too hard).... lets not forget how overpriced macs are...my sisters paid $1200(+tax) for the cheapest mac with a core 2 duo..i bought a PC with i7 and the exact same graphics card as them,....i paid $800(+tax)..i put mac OS into my PC..BAM suck it mac lovers =)

i have a dv6t, which is designed like the envy. another build issue it the top has a gap and that the bottom top cover is uneven with the bottom. but either way, these computers rock.

could you tell me if the mini DispayPort on your Envy 14 still works fine, mine never worked, The HP helpdesk in The Netherlands as well in the US, told me there are issues known with the mDP, but no one can tell me how long it will take to resolve it.
I have been in contact with HP for more than 3 months, and they still don't have a solution..:(

I've connect my envy 14 to my 22" LCD throught HDMI oport on envy.
althought I setup the monitor it native res (1920 x 1080), it doesn't display fullscreen of my monitor (only a square at center, like 720p).

You probably figured this out already... but right click the desktop>click screen resolution>click on the display labeled "2">then change the resolution to 1080.

@cml4456 yes I have figured it out more than 2 months ago, but it not like you said, I've already set the display in 1080p. I have to config the scaling option on the Catalyst setting on max level, by default it just set on about 2/3.

@kalibrador I firgured it out long ago, you have to go to catalyst control center (right click on desktop, Graphics Properties) while you are connect to the external monitor, on the top left menu, chose Desktop and Display, on the lower screen that have a icon for your monitor, press the down arror, chose Confirgure, next you chose Scaling Options and move the scale to get your screen display all over your monitor :)

@kianswarehouse have you ever owned a macbook pro? If you have not i can understand the ignorance, they are truly enjoyable machines. Ive owned multiple PCs running win/linux/bsd and my mac is far more enjoyable than any of my PCs. You can show me all the impressive specs about your machine if you want... but i loooove my macbook and it suites my programming needs very well. You should give it a try for a laptop, for a desktop, PC all day.
