Outstanding video! I love it. Virginia O'Brien was so beautiful and had a great voice. She really had a unique delivery and could be very funny with that deadpan humor! Thanks for posting. ;-)
Oh my God!!!!!!!!! Thank you very very very much for posting this! I am such a huge La O'Brien and I LOVE this song! She is so perfect and so fabulous in this clip that I've now watched it 6 times back to back. :)
Great to see Virginia in color. I have a reel to reel of out takes and never seen or heard songs from MGM films..a gal sings this same song..never have placed the voice.
One other note - Abe Minsky's, which was on 14th Street around the corner from where I live, had a show called "Minsky University" where at the end of their turns, all the girls - in caps and gowns - were awarded diplomas during a curtain-call bit. It was very popular and the show went on the road to many American cities, so adults in the audience would be pretty familiar with the reference.
Can someone please explain the line "Yes, this box office Minksy gives them a diplomy"? I assume its some kind of double-entendre, but I don't get it.
Yes, she moved off that deadpan gimmick quick and actually uses the close up really expressively. She is my favorite swing singer, master of self parody, and what a big voice.
@MrJnobianchi I absolutely agree she was a completely overlooked (not even underrated) jazz vocalist. I fell in love with her the first time I saw "The Big Store" (Marx Bros) and had a ball seeking out her every musical clip for many years before YouTube brought most of them to light. The only ones that remain unseen here can be found at the Paley Media Center (formerly the Museum of Television), where many of her TV appearances from the 50's can still be viewed.

My God. A beautiful woman who didn't get a nose job, fat lips, double DD titts or tummy tuck. Imagine someone who actually looks natural. Amazing.

@jazmaan The "Minsky", I believe, refers to one of the biggest theaters of the time.'
Remember a movie called "The Night They Raided Minsky's"? It might be... "YouTube-able".
professortheremin 1 year ago
@jazmaan You're combining two sentences.
1 - "Yes, it's box office."
2-"Minsky gives them a diplomy, but no matter..."
"Box office" refers to anything in the entertainment industry that makes money.
"Minsky" is the last name of brothers who had a successful burlesque house from the 1910s-1930s.
"Diplomy" is a colloquial way of saying "diploma."

@Kinemacolour Thank You! Now it makes sense! Basically the morale of the story is sex sells and it all dates back to Salome.
