Hey, if that is your voice. In fact the only known person is able, as has been discussed is the named Bird Trill, or Triple coloratura in vocal technique.
Could this possibly qualify as the first music video? I know that there are films which were synchronized to music in the 20s and 30s but a video for a musical performer that is specifically shot to promote the individual artist singing the song?...
When I was a 3 we had a record player which would play the super slow 16 speed. My big brother used to tie me up, lock me in a dark closet, and play Chuncho. It terrified me and made me cry. Only song I've ever been scared of, haha! I love this and every other song on Inca Taqui. Great songs sung by an amazing woman! Thanks for posting this!
If you want to hear a good example of the whistle voice or register go to "MINNIE RIPERTON'S HIGH NOTES" on YOUTUBE. This video features women singing in their whistle voices register. Also, check Wikipedia for a much more detailed explanation of "whistle register" and "vibration."
A vibrato is a pulsating effect when singers hold a note. It sounds like a flutter. It is caused by a very fast fluctuation between a pitch and a pitch very close to it. The whistle voice however, is a very high pitch that can be produced way above a singers highest notes. Mariah Carey uses this alot. It is produced with a different physiology than normal singing. Little kids use this voice when they squeal. It is difficult to access the whistle voice, Yma is comfortable in this register.
I saw another version of this video where Yma Sumac is explaining that she learned to sing from imitating the birds of the Amazon. This is one of her most popular creations and I feel her best. It is not a pop tune that has words with melodies that repeat. This is a masterpiece. As a teacher of voice I am amazed with her vocal virtuosity. The intervals she chooses creates a haunting and mystical ambiance.
I am a choir director. When a person has a 3 octave range, they are admired. Yma has a range that is close to 5 octaves. She can go from an incredibly low note to one that is in the highest part of her voice with such ease and fluidity. Like Bobby McFerrin, she uses her voice in very non traditional ways. She also uses a part of the voice known as the whistle register which Mariah Carey also uses. This is a voice that is above normal human range and is difficult to access. Yma is amazing.
@SCharton1972 Wow you really are ignorant aren't you? Do you actually do ANY real research at all before you make such ignorant statements? The whole Amy Camus myth was based on a joke of Yma and her stage crew walking down the street, seeing her name on the theater sign board being reflected back through a store shop front window. Why don't you look up her videos where she is awarded the highest honor by the Peruvian government or her albums recorded BEFORE she even arrived in the U.S.?
She has a 4 and a half octave voice. from B2 to C♯7. Both extremes can be heard in this song. she sings in the low baritone register as well as above the range of an ordinary coloratura soprano
I've read about it too. She claimed that after a italian journalist told her that she could not sing as well as a opera singer, she sang the queen of the night and reached an E7. But I don't know if it's true because there never was a recording.
She claimed that after a italian journalist told her that she could not sing as well as a opera singer, she sang the queen of the night and reached an E7. But I don't know if it's true because there never was a recording.
Alas the queen of exotica, the princess of Peru , Nightingale of the Andes, wonder of music died saturday the first of november at the age of 86. May she rest in peace. I know that she is now singing to the angels and they are listenning at her in wonder. I love you Yma, you shall ever be alive in my heart.
What astonishing is the fact that she still amazes people to day with her music & performance, sooo far far ahead of her time Even after more than half century the finest artists are no match for IMA SUMAC. She is unpopular among tha masses cos of her finest quality and third world background. However, she's still descovered & remembered. Thanks x posting this beautiful clip.
I saw another video of this song and I don't know which one I like the best. This one is a little more haunting but the voice is still the same Yma. One of my favorites of hers. Her voice is unique and beautiful!
Yma Sumac me ENCANTA!
