  • Very bad... Karate Shotokan is a sport, the traditional Karate true is Shorin Ryu

  • woo

  • i love the sound of punch by master kenji .. so powerful..

  • Por que hay tanto idiota que le gusta criticar como si ellos fueran verdaderos maestros jajja

  • 30 years ago I started training because I believed this was something I could not Master - and I was right. Even the simplest technique can never be mastered.

  • @ThisIsDCOg 30 years and you still belive that, quit doubting yourself, you do better then the people who dsont try and make an attempt

  • Don't blame people with black belts, blame those who are their masters. There is no bad student, only bad master - Karate kid (orginal)

  • they all seem to be "muscling" their punches. its all in the technique. this is a real karate master teaching real karate technique. OSU

  • its amazing the amount of knowledge and practice it takes to execute a proper punch. real karate. OSU!

  • Comment removed

  • omg..

  • ARE THIS BLACK BELTS??? IF THEY ARE WOW!!!

  • American Karatecas lokk like idiots. They can not puch properly. The master shows many times and they can not understand. Fool people.

  • ..? i typed in the an it toook me to this?

  • That master has some crazy power in him. The other guys not so much.

  • Really displays the problem with modern karate. A bunch of "black belts" punching the air with a large majority of obviously bad technique. Are we supposed to fear these "martial" artists. This is just sad..

  • @bwconklin The biggest problem with modern karate is were people practice, its best to be outside.

  • Wow this is awesome. I'm only a yellow belt in Kempo Karate so I don't know that much yet. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks to me that he's using his shoulders in order to generate more power into his punches? My sensei is having us focus on technique more than power right now, which is good, but I was just wondering...wouldn't twisting your hips like they seem to be doing here throw your center of balance off?

  • @Kempokaratefan Hi you are correct in a way that Sensei is generating power from the rotation of his shoulder,in shotokan we generate power not only from the hips but from the Dan Tien,(mid point)or your centre of balance. You twist using the lats in your back, droping the shoulder slightly then punch using the whole body rotation,it looks like it just comes from the shoulder but its generated through the whole body, balance is not effected due to your XYZ axis being aligned

  • I think karate teaches more than physical movements. It teaches discipline, mental harmony, and it's for all ages.

  • What state this dojo's in?

  • why is it that the instructor is correcting a black belt on the way that he punches??? if that is really a black belt , then shouldnt he have already known how to punch correctly in the way that he is being taught?

  • This Kenji Yano is really something else. There are so many Japanese "masters" like him, floating around who are so under-rated. Many are not into the poltics of karate. They just quietly teach pure karate. We owe a great deal to these types of people. We need to be mindful of how special it is that these guys share this with westerners. A Japanese way of training is truly special, and it can bring out the best in people. We should be thankful to men like Kenji Yano. God bless USA and Japan

  • Wow, these "black belts" really need some work. Its ashame to see this kind of talent with the letters JKA anywhere near it !!

I'm thinking these are recreational students at best.

  • @YodanSensei I agree with what you are saying, about these students, but everybody's got to start somewhere. Even though these students are "black belts", they have likely never seen anything like this. They likely have a strong foundation based on their knowledge of the kata techniques, and basics. The problem is that they don't know HOW to do techniques. Karate is still evolving in the USA, and it has been dealt a major blow by MMA. Hopefully JKA karate will continue to evolve. Let's hope

  • the students are very diciplined. that's what makes them good fighters.

  • Holy crap when he punches it makes a sound! D:

  • you gotta be kidding that all of them are black belts ?!

i think some belts were bought otherwise i cant explain

  • @xMOONxKNIGHTx says headquarters on the description so im guessing this is full of many other dojos sensei in that association.

  • the people doing this are in their 30's and maybe even 40's...

that's probably why they are slow at it...

  • Ha you know what i hate, when you join a new Dojo and everyone but you sucks and the master/sensi is AMAZING! XD

  • @icheatin but why exactly do you hate that? shouldn't you feel good that you are more proficient than the other students?

  • @jurgenbono Well ya but i just wish that i had competition you know except 4 black belts there good

  • VERY GOOD MASTER!!

    Oss

  • it´s better to practice the Karate do, because you help to controller the character, honesty, discipline and the important attitude in the life: the spirit of the personality

  • Memories! Those starchy snapping ghi's!

My father was karate trained back in the early fifties until the seventies. Lesson learned

    by me when punching my brother in anger;

my father clasped my upper lip between his forefinger and middle finger and "towed" me upstairs for a private lesson in self-control!

  • boh....i am an italian instructor, and far from me to criticize a master....but....i see a class for yellow belts, if i see a black belt performing as those guys,i would start to think about my teaching.

    real poor.sorry

  • show!!!!!!!

  • The master taking this class was good but the students showed poor technique and where black belts! & still had to be shown basic techniques that they have obviously been graded on being black belts & all So is this another case of students showing up paying there fee and being given there grade on that basis, instead of grading when they have actually learned and demonstrated proper traditional technique gust like there master from Japan who obviously has learned and been graded proper fashion

  • i just love this

  • thier not getting it what he is talking about. the hip snap of the punch and power that comes with the punch

  • @edlo123 He's also generating alot of that power naturally by pulling the arm back into the chamber just as hard as the thrown punch. starting at 4:03 you can see him just reefing the arm back into the chamber.... i think this helps with the shoulders and hips. Its really tough to understand these sensei with the language barrier...

  • he reminds me of my sifu frank yee of hung ga

  • i dont like when people want to learn karate to kick other asses, a true martial artist seeks inner peace, and compassion with others, karate should be used to protect people and used as an art like gongfu

  • @HappyBuddha100 karate is only to fight for the sake of justice its an ar..t not that ufc crap where they fight to kick ass .true peace my fellow martial artist

  • yes, i think karate was used also for the samurai's for their honor, and now adays people dont respect that honor

  • @HappyBuddha100 You are way off with your history.

Okinawans "created" karate to defend themselves against the Japanese samurais.

The Japanese samurais only knew jujitsu at the time, Karate spread to Japan throughout the late 1800's.

  • I think you can clearly see the point in the sensei's face when he becomes frustrated with their technique in punching - they're all black belts - they should have punching technique down by first dan

  • classic demonstration of water downed poorly executed American karate. most of them seem to be black belts...ha

  • @tropicof exactly His instruction is good but he is not correcting the students not doing it or punishing them for repeating bad technique. I teach and take, and bad technique gets a shinai to the back or leg or knocking out pushups. Teaching is useless if it isnt applied. But I will say this he seems to be punching to instead of just being a count caller like most bad instructors.

  • @Bigant55 yes i agree very much!

  • most of the students in the class dnt have power in their punches. best way for them to realize that is to watch their punch as opposed to the master.

  • @15madara yes they do....if you dont belive...fight them and see..

  • wheres the hip thrust......

  • I think the reason the sensei spent so long on a basic technique is that he realized they didn't even have that, so had to take them back to the beginning.

  • you can get knocked out by the right boxer. and you can get knocked out by the right karate practitioner. it's all about the man performing the technique, where and how he learned; much, much more than it is a fight. styles don't win fights. people win fights. they may happen to train in one discipline, or cross train in many. prepare yourself to handle all situations, free your mind, master yourself, and then you will face death with a smile.

  • Words are beautiful, aren't they?

  • sport is sport. it's never illegal in the street to get kicked in the nuts. gouged in the eyes. hit above the waist. kneed while you're down. hit in the back of the head. etc. all sports, even mma where it's closer to quote un quote "real" fighting. but it still is a sport where certain techniques that would be learned for real war combat are illegal. just study hard, choose your own personal goal and work hard to attain it. everyone isn't, will not be, and does not want to be a warrior.

  • That would result in a draw. If you gotta choose between Prison/electrocution or hospital/death by gun shot. I think that's a lose/lose situation. lol.

  • I agree with Brickshooter...no one do what the sensei tell them...anyway...the kata is NOT kumite, self defence, etc etc...bla bla...kata is the chance to pratice the karate alone.(Behind the house...backward in the garden) Kata is a kind of dictionary of the correct technics of the karate and made for practising alone...

  • I think Yano's limited English is screwing up the lesson.

He's telling everyone to use more hips and be explosive at the end of each technique.

Everyone nods. But no one is doing it.

    Where is the Japanese-to-English translator?

  • Just a hunch but...

I think he is trying to make up for that by beating the hell out of them, they might not learn the proper technique but they will learn something by being physically pushed.

  • He's beating somebody in this video? Whom, I didn't see it?? THIS you calling "being physically pushed" ??? This is a very mild training session, but these guys (all of them, no exception) should go back to white belts. NONE of them does the Zuki correctly! This is pathetic. They all wear black belts, and are not ashamed of their miserable techniques. In any self-respecting Shotokan Dojo these guys would never get a green belt. I think he sees that he can't make nothing out of them.

  • brickshooter, I would agree with you if this were a bunch of beginners... but this is a bunch of people who all wear black belts. If they're still not familiar with japanese terminology and principles of using hip rotation in katate techniques, may be they should reconcider their reasons for practicing karate.

  • this is traditional shotokan form karate, so you don't get that actual fight knowledge.

  • JKA karate rocks. Yano is one tough karate instructor. 1000 techniques over and over again. You want to learn how to punch or kick? Repetition. To develop power and speed repetition. There is no short cut.

  • retards standing there punching the air all day won't make you a good fighter.

  • We punch like this to train our "basics" "kihon". YOu must master basics to be able to move in the style of karate..this type of "air training" is just a training method. and all these people who are doing it know they will nto use that in a fight but when applied appropriately to freestyle; the basic training shows up and becomes a whooole different story ;) its like magic :P

  • making dumb comments on YouTube won't either! It part of traditional training, and yes it will make you a better fighter by having strong punches!

  • yes well, whether or not it's a dumb comment is debatable. put an average guy who's been doing boxing for a year against an average karate black belt and 9 out of 10 times the karateka will lose. i earned my black belt in shotokan, i spent a lot of time practicing stupid katas that aren't practical and doing sparring that's unrealistic. i would be a better fighter today if i had spent that time doing mma training right from the start instead of later.

  • I agree that most martial artist will loose in a fight not because their training is unrealistic. Most time they will lose because they will get hit. Now a days martial art are watered down and training is less brutal.

Take a martial artist that trains "old school" that is use to getting hit and place them in a ring with a boxer, I would put money on the martial artist.

I have been training in the martial arts for 20 years and the most valuable training is the katas.

    That is my opinion!

  • the whole boxer vs a martial artist has been proven i do believe it was in the 20's and the karateka won. i dont believe that its watered down or less brutal it cant be to brutal or you wouldnt have anyone that would want to train cuz of injury. and i do agree bout the kata its good exercise and there are (bunkai) hidden techniquesin the kata. what style do u train in and whos ur sensei

  • so let me get this straight. you're talking about some bullshit experiment in the 20s that proved karate is better than boxing. lol. yeah whatever. just admit it, karate guys can't take a punch. as soon as they get a solid punch in the face they want the ref to stop the fight and their whole world crumbles. karate has been terribly diluted and to say it hasn't is ignorant. my teacher was ok he was a 5th dan, and the reason people do martial arts is to learn how to fight and protect themselves.

  • i think it really has to do with the individual and finding the right teachers.

  • Judo user?? LOL!!

  • Comment removed

  • well if you spent all that time traing and got your black belt and think that some of the stuff u did was stupid you either did have a good teacher or you were doing it for the whole wrong reason. do you fight mma now.

  • how long did it take you to get ur black belt? A good traditional school takes 5-6 yrs of hard work to master the basics and that is not an easy task. hear in america their are only a handfull of schools that acually have a traditional basis. Its alot different than going to a school for a yr and becuase you paid for and happen to break a board or to within a yr to get a black belt which is really only the begining of a martial arts journey.

  • Pocketbanana, you are wrong my freind. I do understand what you say though. Kumite (sparring) is the sport versiion of karate and its style and application is derived from its rule set. It is not about trading blows with your opponent like boxing. Tradional kumite and self defence are not necessarily the same thing. Yes there is a degree of overlap. Kata are not stupid. If you think so this isnt your fault but your senseis!! Ive been doing boxing for 3 years AND teach karate.

  • Kata contains movements for self defence. The problem is the modern day application of these movements isnt often taught in karate. Its a shame, theyre there! Take a right cross for eg. is it really that diff from a gyakuzuki? Ok the guard, and the heel comes up in boxing and it doesnt in kata but the similarities are more than the differences. Karate is not scoring points but understanding the modern day application of the kata moves and applying them effectively. This is down to the sensei!

  • You do have a point but more like where and how the arts are practiced

    Shotokan is certainly civilised.

Aimed at people who just want to train and think they would never get in to a fight

  • both karate and kung fu suck. if you want to do something good try mma, muay thai, kickboxing or boxing.

  • **Kung Fu has all Martial Arts in it.

  • **Kung Fu keeps you well balanced.

  • Karate and Kung Fu are of the same cloth...

  • Kung fu is way more better /beyond than karate.

Kung fu acts/thinks like an animal .

karate thinks like a human .

  • Karate came in part came from some of the chinese arts so wtf are you talking about?

  • o vovo é uma arma mortal!!!

  • this is far from traditional karate, and is the predominant problem with most karate schools around the world.

BTW - tsuki waza does have a purpose both in class and the real world, shame it is far from reflected here.

  • dont use the strenght, use the qi.

  • chi = energy flowing from somone

ki = awareness of that energy

    put very simply

  • chi = energy doesnt mean flowing from some one.

    ki= same f#ckin thing numb f#ck

  • i had to put it very simply but people who are as stupid as you still can't understand

  • Stupid eh?

lets see your bunkia for tekki?

    This should be interesting.

  • Tekki , naihanchi. Dude you are so stupid I bet you cant even work out one or two techniques from the kata that some pratt broke in to 3 katas.

    Lets hear them?

Here is a clue. One specific technique is hidden in the kata tekki shodan but forget the foot stamping part that is a shotokan add on..

  • Masatoshi Nakayamas karate is nothing like some versions of modern shotokan.

    At least his version works.

  • dude have you ever even done shotokan?

or did you go for 3 lessons as a 12 year old then get kicked out for aggression problems?

don't speak about what you don't know about

  • Dude I was putting 1st to 5th dans on their arses in free fighting before your father f#cked your mother so stfup.

Although I must admit on the way up I took some beatings. indomitable spirit ever heard of it?

You one of these candy assed f#ckers that plays around?

Eonada had the right idea and as I said so did Masatoshi Nakayamas.

Now I regular sparr boxers mma types so what the f#ck do you do to 80 percent prove what you have works?

  • don't speak about what you don't know about

    I once did shotokan.

You guys cant use your own kata. It took a Westerner to work some of them out.

  • you "once" did shotokan?

who is the grandmaster of shotokan karate?

oh wait your just going to google it so hmm trying to think of sumit a stupid child like you can't google..so here it is. why will somebody who truly does karate never get in a fight? if you can't answer that then gtfo you have no valid opinion

  • Try this

Why will somebody who truly does karate never intentionaly get in to a street fight?

    Let me see

kyokushin is a style of karate and they fight.

I use to fight full contact karate.

    Boxers fight

    MMA guys fight

You dont know anything about fighting so you live in cuckoo land eh?

  • Why will somebody who truly does karate never get in a fight?

    Answer

    Aint you the stupid one

  • You def have no valid opinion.

So to my question numb nuts I bet you cant even work out one or two techniques from the kata that some pratt broke in to 3 katas. Tekki.

Where is your posting of some techniques?

    Post them or stfup

  • SHOTOKAN ! OSS!!!!! :]

  • spelt osu <3

  • Lyoto Machida has risen to the top of the UFC he is a practioner of traditional shotokan karate as you have watched in this video. Dose traditional karate work on the street? Dose it work in the ring? you be the judge.

  • Machida is freaking awesome, i knew it was a matter of time before someone like him took out the rest of the people. He wins because people are so used to wild swinging punches, and not having focus behind their attacks, when he hits them with that straight punch, it rocks them because they aren't prepared for it. That is the power of shotokan :)

  • Oss!

  • indeed!

  • ITs not the style its the person. The ability to apply your art to real world and sport senarios is what makes a true martial artist

  • traditional(not sport karate it is a joke) Karate it is very realistic martial art and the more effective martal art in "hard" situations. On the other hand, sometimes do serious harm to student's health.

  • ya karate is a martial art every counter move in it is either to break a bone knock out or kill somone

  • Agreed.Based in moral values and the principle of surviving Karate is maybe the absolute martial art, but some "merchants" try to convert it to a game.

  • i have been doing karate for 7 years now and am a blue belt. Our style has 10 ranks you must go through before you reach black belt. I also had to get 4 stripes at orange (4th rank) and 2 stripes at red (5th rank).

  • Thats why I could neve do this. They look very silly. I tried a karate classs once, and they told us to do this weird stance...I think its called a horse stance..and I just couldn't do it. I felt like such a dunce.

  • lollipopfop go fuck urself u nerd u have no life go fuck off dumbasshole it isnt wierd ur just a stupid assfucking prettyboy fag.

  • Dude, you're aren't going to get a stance (or any other technique for that matter just from your first class) It takes years of practice. Why do you think it takes at least a couple of years just earn your black belt?

  • You can do most the basics like this on your own, their not delving into anything deep here

  • I strongly say, traditional Karate is stronger than today's Karate.

  • classic example why I gave up Karate - but if they enjoy it good luck to them.,

  • Well, what is Dan level? Anyone gets the Dan... "earning" a Dan is not what it used to be.

  • Well i have to say that this "techings" are not the best.

The master low his head in the zuki and seems not that relaxed.

In my opinion Masters like Kaze are more Traditional and usefuller.

And also the pupils in this vid......don´t know why but it seems they´re not really at Dan level

  • The old guy has some bad habits. Opening his hand just a bit prior to the retraction of his guard hand, the over twisting and slight lean, and his punches arent straight, they have a slight uplift to them.

  • You obviously have absolutely no idea of JKA Karate, right? ;-)

  • he is 8th dan, show some respect please.

  • 1000 techniques could have been better trained against some form of resistance.

One of the instructors should have done all the techniques with the class as a modal of inspiration and technique.

  • they do that to get power from the hips to throw their punches. these are just basics of karate, quite different than when in active sparring.

  • Have you ever noticed that a karate punch doesn't exactly come from where you think it comes from?

  • in theory the other hand is returning to the hip elbowin an attacker from behind him, thats the theory, god bless

  • Lots of respect for Karate-Do, however the JKA; which is this dojo; is still not teaching the inner workings of body mechanics. I know I was a member of this dojo for 15 years! When I broke away I joined the ITKF... Very different and teaches the true understanding of basics. Sorry but the JKA is just a big money machine.

  • he like my master.

  • This is Shotokan Karate.Good.

  • This is shotokan karate not that good.

What is the point of having no resistance other than air?

At the beggining it is basics against air.

Time would be better spent doing basics at least against a pad.

    At best something harder.

The technique they are using isnt that bad.

Believe it or not Old time boxers including world champs used a simular method.

  • Master Yano made a great point. Not a lot of the students were using there waists as much as they should have been when punching. Lots of arm strength and speed! Though too stiff in the waist.

  • wow, this guy's amazing! Just let me say three things:

1.: The repeating of such "simple" technics as Oi Zuki is essentially. How could you be able to harm your opponent in a real fight (I don't talk about championships etc) if your oi zuki is weak or whatever.

2.: Look at the dojo: It's not very big. If they started to do their ushiro-mawashi-geri and stuff they would just get in each other's way.

3.: The ones that want to do sports are definetely wrong in a training of a real japanese sensei

  • EXCEPT OI ZUKI IS A STEPPING PUNCH

  • no its not Oi Tzuki is a straight punch with the leading side (right leg = right fist) as oposed to gyaku tzuki (right leg = left fist) ofcourse in a hachi dachi it doesn't mather since there is no leading leg. So it can be don stationary in hachidachi or kibadachi.

  • Oi zuki IS a stepping punch. Kizama zuki is a punch off front fist.

  • ok guess you guys are right. My japanese isn't THAT perfect ;) I teach in Flemish...

  • most correct to use is sonobazuki or chokuzuki I guess. sonobazuki is to stay at the same spot, chokuzuki means straight punch. I don't know what "oi" means as I do wado and we call in junzuki. Jun is from jujutsu that means same leg as arm..

  • oi means lunging.

  • che fifata anche io anche iooooo

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Wow. Look at all these basics. This is old school real awesome stuff. Again, tomasleeman domo arigato.

  • One of my all time favorite Sensei,he is one REAL tough JKA Master!!

  • Man talk about powerful punching...

  • holy crap i found my katate teeacher at 7:10 wow lol i i do shotokan karate

  • How Do i Do

    1.Rear Snap Kick

    2.Rear Kick--F.S

    3.Front Snap Kick

    4.Step Snap Kick

  • yawn

  • wow ..one count 10 punches

  • wow

  • It's footage like this that gives me the bias to Kara-te over TKD.

  • which taekwon-do? ITF or WTF? they are different martial arts.

  • I used to do ITF. I have nothing against it, I'm sure other people enjoy it. But on a more personal note I believe Karate is more practicle.

  • this is how karate SHOULD be taught

  • so your a karate teacher AND a star wars fan ?

  • awesome class.I take taekwondo, but i like karate as well.I took it when i was younger.

  • Watching this is as good as driving to and observing a class.

  • The sensei has power that is very similar to tai ji quan, sudden hip power. Such punches, supposedly, cause ripples through the water that the human body is made of. Try punching water, and then do it with paper floating on it. If your power is sudden enough, the paper may break. Internal bleeding, can be, however, done with any punch of any martial art, just needs a lot of power.

  • OO i wonder where this was My sensi sensi was taught by this guy. Hes amazing this guy comes to St. Paul every year. at lease for the last 2 years.
