What happened to the film where the diver comes up, starts stripping off his gear and then starts running down the hull/dock trying to get away from the scene? He looked terrified and was running in a dead heat.
I did not know about this until I found a postcard in my mom's photos from her Uncle in Chicago who saw the Eastland. It is a postcard of a family of 6 being loaded in coffins onto a wagon. Pretty morbid. The warehouse where they housed the bodies became Harpo (Oprah's) studios. Her employees claim the building is haunted. I have that postcard and will keep it for historical value.
i have to do a paper on this disaster, if anyone has any other good videos or anything, can you please send them to me? thanks, it would be alot of help
1:30 this building in the background is still there, on the north side of the river between Clark and LaSalle Streets. I used to pass by it everyday when I worked in downtown Chicago.
Also the morgue where the bodies were taken is now Oprah Winfrey's studio, which is said to be haunted by the ghosts of the Eastland.
They also had far too many people on board. They, the authorities, had removed people who were over balancing the ship several times that day, only to have them come on.
Wow, the photographs used in this video are of such hi-quality that they appear like a window into the past. Obviously, somebody knew how to use a camera with film in it back then. It's a well done video and thank you for sharing.
My grandmother and her sister were on this steamer. Her sister did not survive. My grandfather was engaged to Hedwig at the time but married Anna who survived.
The ship was top-heavy due to many modifications and the ballast tanks were not filling properly to counter the passenger shifts. The ship was also found unsafe for use, but was still used on that day... it is a true tragedy that so many lost their lives so close to safety....
Most people dont know about this one just like my school fire video. My Grandfather was at the dock that day. He said it rolled because as the ship was pulling away all, the excited passengers ran to the other side to get a good spot to look out. The balast tanks were filled the wrong way and the ship rolled over
