People are all capable of doing something USEFUL. It might not be fun, but they can do a service while on this planet. People should be directed into their skill set earlier. For instance, if a kid is good at hands on things, like fixing a car, but they hate writing and analyzing Shakespeare, why the fuck are they stuck in a classroom til the age of 18, doing stuff they don't like and they are not good at. Get them in a hands on trade school where they can get good at something useful early.
No matter what the problem is we're falling behind other countries. Why doesn't the govt investigate this. Of course thats if they decide to act like adults and fix our deficit.
It's easy to make the teachers, education system, teachers union the scapegoats for this problem in America. Though we all know that a child's education are primarily the parent's and the child's responsibility. To equate the performance of the teacher is causal to the performance of the student is flawed. Pointing fingers at the education system is not going to solve anything if the success of students are more related to the parent's upbringing and student's own mentality.
@hosuwei10 So, I am going to take a guess here and presume your children do not attend public schools in America. Because if they did, your opinion would not be what it is. Let me so kindly inform you that most of our schools are funded by property tax. Which means poor children go to poor schools. Simply saying a parents upbringing is what causes our education system to fail is ignorant.
Teachers Union goons always have an excuse, don't they? The problems are always "too complex" to be solved. Panel discussions and BS sessions is all get from these union thugs, whereupon they immediately cry that they "need more money". But we already know that they are paid MORE THEN ADEQUATELY. These Teacher Union goons are the problem plain and simple.
It is not a movie that provides "over simplification" to a major problem. The fixes are common sense but the price is to high for the powers to be and the entrenched national NEA/AFT Unions. I live in a rural town in a small county and our school district is on watch status. My teenage child wasn't taught to memorize her multiplication tables. This Docu was an eye opening realization of all the garbage we have been fed about our children not being teachable. Its about power, money and unions

People who go into teaching are usually either (a) passionate about kids, and passionate about education or (b) don't know what else to do. If teachers were better paid and better respected, there would be more competition for jobs and only the best and most passionate teachers would be employed. As it is, people can start out keen beans but become jaded by trying to plug dam holes with their fingers. The education system (and not just in the US) is failing teachers as well as students.
@feuilletoniste your right the systen is failing teacher but you have to acknowledge a bad teacher can ruin a students chances and leaving that teachers in place for decades can ruin hundreds nah thousands of students opportunities. If more good/great teachers stood up and said the system is broken maybe it would start to change.
@SMoldie In a country where millions of teachers are required, it is unavoidable that not all of them can be inspirational and highly invested in their jobs - you couldn't expect that of any profession. Those teachers who ARE invested are too tired at the end of the day to dabble in politics. The whole system needs to be overhauled from the top. Locally-funded rather than centrally-funded schools in a country with very uneven economic development will always result in inequality of opportunity.
@feuilletoniste your apathy is apparent, I complained in the college setting when i thought somebodies teaching methods were outdated, the person was later removed. We have to start being honest with ourselves with regards not the average teachers but the clockwatchers and pension stayers. No educater would allow any of their younger family members to be taught by a poor or even average teacher. Why not start fighting for all kids education.
@SMoldie Apathetic? Try furious (with the system, not you!) There are 9 teachers in my family. Each does their best for their students - kids in rural & disadvantaged areas, kids with learning difficulties & disabilities, kids with parents who are drug addicted or in jail. They work all day, evenings, weekends, holidays. All they get for their love & dedication is a kick in the teeth from the government, from school administrators & from the public who still think teaching is a cushy gig.
@feuilletoniste I have lots of friends and family members in the profession, it a truely heart rending job sometimes that only occasionally gives you a buzz. Trust me I know that civilians would last a couple hours in the trrenches if asked to teach a group of 14 year olds.:D My point is if we all acknowledge there is a level of burn out and gentle removed those whom have done great thing but are no longer enjoying or imparting info to students; we would all be in a better head space.
@SMoldie Well, I can't disagree with you there! And even the best teachers, after 30 years or so, would be in a great position to act as mentors and consultants for younger teachers and schools in struggling areas while those still brimming with energy could carry on the fight. Wouldn't hurt to have a few on governmental education boards either ;0)

The IMPACT evaluations are BIASED and lead to FAVORITISM ! Mean-spirited and UNFAIR!
The majority of the teachers fired were OLDER, BLACK WOMEN who had a vested interest in the community. They were fully credentialled and had years of experience.
They were replaced with YOUNG, WHITE, inexperienced kids who were temporary "slumming" through the ghetto.
BLATANT DISCRIMINATION and OUTRIGHT RACISM!
Michelle Rhee has NO RESPECT for teachers, and often refers to them with disdain!
@MsJanetWood those older teachers are not mother figures they were suppose to be educating the next generation, they failed on every level for 25 years Washingtons school system was/is notorious for its drop out rates and appalling stats. How long would you have continued with a broken system.
@MsJanetWood I can feel your passion for teachers, what about the children and young people. They continued to be failed and we collectively shrug our shoulders and say," well what do you expect". We need to give them the daily affirmation that "you are worthy you can/will learn and that you will go to college", rather than the message they are getting at the moment, " you will drop and your life has no value unless you have athletic ablity or are very intelligent".
According to the Washington, DC Examiner, 2007 salaries for: Michelle Rhee, Chancellor: $275,000 Richard Nyankori, Special Assistant to the Chancellor: $140,000 Kaya Henderson, Deputy Chancellor: $200,000 Lisa Ruda, Chief of Staff: $200,000 Jesus Aguirre, Transition Assistant: $150,000 Jenny Abramson, Transition Team Leader: $140,000 John Davis, Transition Assistant (T.A.): $125,000 Anthony de Guzman,T.A.: $125,000 Billy Kearney,T.A.: $120,000 Ximena Hartsock, T.A.: $115,000
@MsJanetWood and your point? She is running a huge organisation, her opposite number in corporate america would be earning 2 or 3 times more. The question is, if your child was being taught by a awful/demotivated/depressed teacher would you say, he/she should be retrained on the job therefore given a second chance or asked to consider another more appropriate post for their particular skill set /mentality.Life long tenure shackles both school and teachers.
A huge, and undervalued, part of the problem, is student homelife and initiative. When I taught at Willingboro, NJ, the students refused to do anything. You cannot teach people like that. A teacher should not have to fight with kids or beg them to study, take notes, and have responsibility. I would get answers on tests like "ben franklin" to a question that asked "name one protection found in the first amendment."
You would get absurd answers from kids who obviously didn't care.
One problem is that a lot of performance has nothing to do with the teacher, because a teacher has little control over the product. A teacher is not a factory worker pushing a button. The machines don't say "no." They don't refuse to do their homework or outright tell you "I don't study."
I really don't understand how some teachers can sit here and type on how "biased" this movie is? If your a good teacher and you produce great results, you should keep your job. If your a bad teacher and you don't produce great results, year after year, then you should be FIRED.
@sue01234567890 Your flaw is assuming that student performance is directly caused by the teacher, rather than the students who might be too dumb/lazy.
@Castaril Growing up, I've had teachers who were so moving and all around inspiring that it makes me smile just thinking about it. Everyone, regardless of background and IQ loved the class and put effort into it. I've also had teachers who were lazy, rude, inconsiderate, and acted like they didn't care. I was an A student, and I even thought "I'm not gonna put any effort into this class because i'm not interested".
Why should both of those teachers hold the same job, let alone it's benefits?
@sue01234567890 What if you're not producing great results because you have children in your class that have parents that don't care, parents doing/dealing drugs, live in a homeless shelter, have barely any food to eat, barely any clothes to wear to school, and have poor attendance? No matter what that teacher does that child cannot benefit from school unless that child is removed from that environment. That teacher will have bad results through no fault of their own. Do we fire them too?
If a teacher has a group of children in which there impoverished/abusive backgrounds are SO detrimental that they are doomed to fail, then why are we giving tenure to a teacher that can't make a difference? If you firmly believe that some teachers, regardless of how great they are, can't get through to their kids, then aren't these teachers just place holders?
@ssny1234 We are giving amazing benefits to people whose job is to just waste their time. By taking away the responsibility teachers have on their students you take away their importance and credibilty.
Do you see how incredibly contradictory the argument becomes?
I'm in med school. I attended a "top 20" undergrad. My BEST teachers were at a community college during a post-BAC. It doesn't matter how smart you are - if you you can't teach, then you're a BAD teacher. From my experience, I prefer teachers who DON'T have a PhD.
There are many aspects as to why the school systems are failing. You can't just make one simple fix. The parents, students, and most of all politics have to be on board. The countries with higher scores promote longer school days and longer school years- which is more beneficial (teachers don't have to reteach the material lost during summer break). The main message is: the school systems need to change and help everyone.
Do you think a POLICE OFFICER working in Oakland, Compton, Watts, or East L.A. has the SAME LEVEL of STRESS and PRESSURE, as cop in Beverly Hills?
Do you think WALKING along RODEO DRIVE is EQUAL to WALKING ALONG 54TH AND CRENSHAW?
A policeman friend of mine went to his wife's Back-to-School-Night. Imagine his surprise when he realized he had PREVIOUSLY ARRESTED half of the parents in attendance!
TIP FOR NEW TEACHERS IN THE INNER-CITY: "DUCK, those aren't FIRECRACKERS!"
If Mr. Guggenheim REALLY CARED about the kids, he would DONATE all PROCEEDS from this MOVIE to the CHILDREN! He would PAY their TUITION for a PRIVATE SCHOOL?
That is if any PRIVATE SCHOOL will accept them? Most private schools are very selective on who they accept in their schools.
Blaming the TEACHERS is akin to a FAT LADY blaming her WEIGHT WATCHER'S counselor!
Kids don't pay attention and don't do their homework! Then, wonder why they fail? Duh?
@MsJanetWood He claimed he will donate all the profit from the movie to the teachers in public school. I dont know if it will be the case at the end though.
Find out about Vero Beach High School in Florida, 1987 and what our so called educators are not telling us about what can be done with computers. They have already wasted 20 years.
The school system is one big failure! This documentary comes out and everyone is up in arms. I have been telling people for years to see the 20/20 special on the american school system. That show is (rightfully so) called "stupid in america". You can find it here on Youtube. I have been with a teacher for the past 12 years and I also have family members that are teachers. I hear horrible stories about the NY school system. And I KNOW the failure comes from the parents!!!!!
People who don't want to see the schools fixed are the first to say things like "they oversimplify the solutions!" "It's more complex than how they make it! blah blah blah!
All they are really saying is "Leave the schools alone because we've got a monopoly and we're making lots of money and won't jeopardize our power!"
First- teachers need near absolute power in the classrooms!
@jellytoast12 Exactly. The film must necessarily simplify, it's not a textbook. That's no indictment on a documentary. What I would like these academics to say is, you know, exactly where did they get it wrong.
i've been teaching for 4 years in los angeles public schools. i'll tell you what goes on. in the schools where the union makes the principals powerless, the principals do nothing and teachers can do whatever they want to. so the teachers end up showing movies or whatnot, putting little effort into their teaching. in the public charter school where i work at now where the principal can hire and fire, the principal always looks at what i do, my lessons, how i interact with the students, etc.
The reason every country is ahead of us is they have discipline in the system! This is never in discussion. They wear uniforms. Disciplined children!!!! Why can children walk around all day listening to a iPod that has songs full of profanity and that's ok as we know that's a major influence...no discipline. Horrible MTV shows are ok to influence children?????
@kesaonez EXACTLY. No discipline! How can kids focus on their studies when they have the freedom to treat people the way they want. Teachers dont have the power to say anything to students without being "told off" by the parent. I used to teach at an elementary school and got a student in trouble for texting in class so I took away his phone for the day. The next day, I was confronted in a parking lot by the parent saying "You have no right to take away my kids personal property"
Surprisingly, only catholic schools in Canada require uniforms. I'm a firm believer that discipline and respect should be taught at home by the parents.
Teachers have no power and children since the dawn of time dislike school, yet they have to do it cause it is their job to learn how to function in society. In the 1950's we were not failing oh why you say? Teachers were respected and children had disciple/Respect for themselves, teachers and society!!!!! That's why.
@kesaonez AND its PARENTS who enforce this disrespect because 1) they don't like being told how to "raise their children" and 2) dont know how to discipline them themselves.
Great questions by experts in the field of education: doctors of education, no doubt. Once again, people fall for propaganda. The guy who made this film fooled us with his global warming film. Now, he's out here selling charter schools, blaming teachers and, like every other clown, never, ever, ever blaming students and parents for the baggage they carry into the classroom. Par for the course.
Fooling who? Global warming is real and the Earth is definitely warming up. Keep spreading your own 'rose glasses' propaganda and see how it works out for you. But yeah, it takes everyone to make the educational system work, just like fighting the effects of global warming will.
The current public school system doesn't work. your giving feedback and solutions that have worked up to and beyond expectations. So you think it sad that your administration isn't represented in a movie? Did you eat a well balanced meal yesterday? think about the children who eat thrown out food from dunkin donuts for dinner who are then made to take test for you to keep your boat or cabin. When a person is paid for a poor job they should give the money back.
so what it means that students in the United States are becoming more stupid. jejeje because of the union and teachers and the government greed. when i see Asian cultures and even England and the are other countries in witch we can say that are way advance in education, in technology, in everything else. this country for greed are forgetting about the education of the students and our children. because of that later on we will see the consequences of having children with lack of education.
People are all capable of doing something USEFUL. It might not be fun, but they can do a service while on this planet. People should be directed into their skill set earlier. What can PARENTS do to help their KIDS get a BETTER EDUCATION?
1.) Turn off the T.V., PlayStation, Nintendo, and Wii.
2.) Make sure your kids do their HOMEWORK!
3.) STUDY! STUDY! STUDY!
4.) Tell your kid to PAY ATTENTION in CLASS!

it's typical for people from New York to criticize things which weren't about or from New York.

Would you BLAME the POLICE OFFICER working in a HIGH CRIME AREA?
Would you BLAME the DOCTOR working in a hospital with a lot of SICK people?
Would you BLAME the LAWYER working with a lot of CRIMINALS?
Would you BLAME the BORDER PATROL AGENTS for all the ILLEGAL ALIENS that are crossing the border?
Would you BLAME the SOCIAL WORKER with a lot of WELFARE CASES?
NO? Why not?
Because there are other FACTORS beyond their control! STOP BLAMING THE TEACHERS!
DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

Google +"computers as tutors" +vero

Eliminate zero tolerance policies!
Bring back the paddle!
Restrict trail lawyers!
Throw out horrible students!
Teach!
jellytoast12 1 year ago

@kesaonez
Surprisingly, only catholic schools in Canada require uniforms. I'm a firm believer that discipline and respect should be taught at home by the parents.
leedy04 10 months ago
Teachers have no power and children since the dawn of time dislike school, yet they have to do it cause it is their job to learn how to function in society. In the 1950's we were not failing oh why you say? Teachers were respected and children had disciple/Respect for themselves, teachers and society!!!!! That's why.
kesaonez 1 year ago
@kesaonez AND its PARENTS who enforce this disrespect because 1) they don't like being told how to "raise their children" and 2) dont know how to discipline them themselves.

Great questions by experts in the field of education: doctors of education, no doubt. Once again, people fall for propaganda. The guy who made this film fooled us with his global warming film. Now, he's out here selling charter schools, blaming teachers and, like every other clown, never, ever, ever blaming students and parents for the baggage they carry into the classroom. Par for the course.

@CharmingMan27
