I went to California Adventure and saw the Adverts for Repo Men... and I instantly thought of watching Repo the Genetic Opera again.
They are way similar, in ways. But it's just the same KIND of movie, just like Star Trek, and Star Wars were both set in space, Repo Men, and Repo Opera are both about futuristic transplant organs.

Nope. Sorry. You're wrong there. Unless Repo took chunks of dialogue and borrowed characters from RTGO, there's no legal action that anyone can take. Even Terrence Zdunich ( one of the creators of RTGO) said himself that RTGO and Repo Men do not have much in common in plot. And for one, Repo Men is not a musical like RTGO.

Aliens Invading, boy meets girl, zombies are alive, the "one" main character that will save them all, and even giving and taking back organs, ALL ideas.
But any how, I'm still going to go see this movie.

I know what you're saying, but the story lines in Avatar and Star Wars are a bit more universal if you know what I mean (both are extremely basic plots, when it comes down it, that cared more about special effects than novel plot twists or techniques). This is a pretty specific idea - repo men repossessing genetically modified organs in a futuristic action-thriller? I'm sorry. But that's kind of a bit too similar for me to be entirely forgiving. Sorry, but people crying foul because it has the same idea as Repo! The Genetic Opera need to do a bit more research. The creators of RTGO can not sue or do anything because Repo Men has no characters, singing, or lines from their movie. Now, if Repo Men did have a character from RTGO with the same name, and sang, then there would be a problem, but there isn't. You can not sue over "ideas". Oh great, a Holywood interpretation of Repo. It can only end up with cheap action, cars, bullets, and a happy ending. "Repo! The genetic opera" had guts, was something refreshing. But, of course, the "Repo men" will be more succesful only because it is more into maistream. Crap, crap, crap.
Despite all of this, the concept of this film is still an extremely good and scary one. A single corporation holding supreme power over life and death. And what happens when that corporation's most dangerous servant ends up at the other end of the gun, and what they must do to survive. After all, it's said that "The only thing more powerful than the system, is the one who will destroy it." Besides, Nightbringer777 was right; R:tGO was boring and I couldn't really care about any characters in it.
It looks decent enough. I'll catch it later on DVD. I PROBABLY won't support it by seeing it in theaters. If it gets some buzz maybe. I too also saw it as a BLATANT rip off. But maybe it will be good enough to stand on its own.

For you info, Universal wanted to buy the rights to repo but wanted to get rid of the music. Zdunich (creator of Repo) said no and brought his business elsewhere (lionsgate). Being the prissy Primadonnas they are Universal made this movie to spite them and show Zdunich there better. The only reason this isn't a lawsuit is because Zdunich and Co. don't have the financial support 4good lawyers. In simpler terms: Zdunich is poor, Universal is the Hollwood Mafia.
The trailer makes it clear that the overall feel of the movie and, as far as I can tell, the plot, are both different from that of R:tGO. However, I'll be the first to tell you that the title, the premise, and most of all, the summaries, are far too close for comfort. It's walking a dangerous line that I don't like having to notice.
i don't think the point was to come up with anything 'creatively' new ... but simply a different representation that will appeal to a different crowd, with the same story in tact. I fail to see what the big deal is all about. Those who enjoyed the 'opera', great! but many would not enjoy it, and i am such a person, but will definitely go see this version. No different than a book being turned into a movie. Two different representations of the same topic.
crap is crap. this is not a "new" version of the opera. this is an old plot consept, guy comes in with not the best of intentions and leaves with a hot girl and new out look on life. this is crap given special efects and resembles a non-crappy movie.
@ljmarkum It's an Issue of give the right people their due. Universal hasn't give Zdunich a dime for what is truly his idea. Yet they sue the suit out of a 13 year old that download a movie.
I know this has been said but this is a total Repo the genetic opera ripoff! They could have used this idea but they should have tried to be a little more original with the concept ... the whole bar code in the title thing makes me so mad... and i don't like Jude Law.

like star wars and star treck are similar because they live in space, but they have completely different societies and different laws of nature. in one theres the force and in the other theres alot more science.

Nope. Sorry. You're wrong there. Unless Repo took chunks of dialogue and borrowed characters from RTGO, there's no legal action that anyone can take. Even Terrence Zdunich ( one of the creators of RTGO) said himself that RTGO and Repo Men do not have much in common in plot. And for one, Repo Men is not a musical like RTGO.

This movies also share the same "ideas" but don't exactly share the same plot. 2012/ The Day After Tomorrow, Turner and Hooch/ K-9, Armaggedon/ Deep Impact, and even though it isn't a movie I see similarities between The Matrix and .hack Sign even though it's an anime.
Aliens Invading, boy meets girl, zombies are alive, the "one" main character that will save them all, and even giving and taking back organs, ALL ideas.
But any how, I'm still going to go see this movie.

@BWaygal117 well i never said it was legally wrong, i just think its kinda... idk i Love RTGO, and that really was a creative idea. and now a big company is going to make a movie extremely similar. idk it just kinda rubs me the wrong way. maybe its because im such a large fan but i dont think that i would like the movie. It took the elements that i enjoy( the music/gothic styles) and turned it into a more "action/explosion badass man" movie.

Eh, I look at it this way, I don't enjoy musicals, so if I can get something similar that still has some integrity plotwise, I'm all the more happy for it.
Don't suppose we could just revel in the different flavors of Repo?
Anywho, just saw it and I enjoyed the realistic, if nihilistic approach to the movie.

for a monthly payment plan, and if you dont pay your payments, then the company sends in special "repo men" to reposses the organ. this creates a sort of superpower in the company. one of the repo men ends up turning against and fighting the company after he refuses to reposses a female's organ.
now, this movie follows that exactly. even with the female. sure they took out the father daughter conflict and replaced with with friend vs friend. but isnt that she same as taking someone elses cont

I know what you're saying, but the story lines in Avatar and Star Wars are a bit more universal if you know what I mean (both are extremely basic plots, when it comes down it, that cared more about special effects than novel plot twists or techniques). This is a pretty specific idea - repo men repossessing genetically modified organs in a futuristic action-thriller? I'm sorry. But that's kind of a bit too similar for me to be entirely forgiving. It's conceptual plagiarism.

Sorry, but people crying foul because it has the same idea as Repo! The Genetic Opera need to do a bit more research. The creators of RTGO can not sue or do anything because Repo Men has no characters, singing, or lines from their movie. Now, if Repo Men did have a character from RTGO with the same name, and sang, then there would be a problem, but there isn't. You can not sue over "ideas". If you could, then wouldn't you think people would be suing James Cameron over Avatar?..cont..

@JenMariApa this movie is about a company -The Union- making artificial organs for people and if that person cannot pay for the the organ, "repo" men will come and claim what is theirs. the main character ends up with a artificial heart and the union tries to repossess it so he is on the run.

I'm a hardcore fan of Repo! The Genetic Opera and I can't even be mad about this.
Mainly because I'm also love action and I get to watch Jude law run around being bad ass and hot, and (hopefully/most likely) undressing at some point. I have no room to complain.

Oh great, a Holywood interpretation of Repo. It can only end up with cheap action, cars, bullets, and a happy ending. "Repo! The genetic opera" had guts, was something refreshing. But, of course, the "Repo men" will be more succesful only because it is more into maistream. Crap, crap, crap.

Despite all of this, the concept of this film is still an extremely good and scary one. A single corporation holding supreme power over life and death. And what happens when that corporation's most dangerous servant ends up at the other end of the gun, and what they must do to survive. After all, it's said that "The only thing more powerful than the system, is the one who will destroy it." Besides, Nightbringer777 was right; R:tGO was boring and I couldn't really care about any characters in it.

It looks decent enough. I'll catch it later on DVD. I PROBABLY won't support it by seeing it in theaters. If it gets some buzz maybe. I too also saw it as a BLATANT rip off. But maybe it will be good enough to stand on its own.

For you info, Universal wanted to buy the rights to repo but wanted to get rid of the music. Zdunich (creator of Repo) said no and brought his business elsewhere (lionsgate). Being the prissy Primadonnas they are Universal made this movie to spite them and show Zdunich there better. The only reason this isn't a lawsuit is because Zdunich and Co. don't have the financial support 4good lawyers. In simpler terms: Zdunich is poor, Universal is the Hollwood Mafia.

The trailer makes it clear that the overall feel of the movie and, as far as I can tell, the plot, are both different from that of R:tGO. However, I'll be the first to tell you that the title, the premise, and most of all, the summaries, are far too close for comfort. It's walking a dangerous line that I don't like having to notice.

Hollywood quite often produces remakes of international films - French, Spanish or Asian
"Repo Men" even isn't a remake.
For example Martin Scorseses "The Departed" is a total remake of the great Hongkong movie "Infernal Affairs". And both movies are great.

i don't think the point was to come up with anything 'creatively' new ... but simply a different representation that will appeal to a different crowd, with the same story in tact. I fail to see what the big deal is all about. Those who enjoyed the 'opera', great! but many would not enjoy it, and i am such a person, but will definitely go see this version. No different than a book being turned into a movie. Two different representations of the same topic.
