  • The high note at 2:01 blew my mind!

  • crosssssssrroaddsssss

  • is side "tracked" a pun?

  • @tmoench1116 no

  • TASTE FOR DAYS!

  • i love this man.

  • britney spears movie

    lmfao

  • in memory of robert!!

  • saw this three years ago and am still in awe of the mans groove!!

  • who knew this would later become crossroads on battlestudies...

  • dang nice run at the end

  • Is that in avatar studios?

  • to me, that's music making babies.

    =

    music at it's best.

  • @00GenerationalMan00: I agree, he feels his music, which is more than you can say about most radio garbage these days. As for the ego? It's a way to keep himself entertained I'm pretty sure. Hell, I think it's hilarious... Too many people get a chub by calling a celebrity "egotistical" to make themselves feel better... Even though this "celebrity" is mocking the fact that people treat him like a celebrity.

Keep it up John, maybe one day you'll be good enough for these numbnuts.

  • looks like the 62' hot rod strat... i want it so bad it has like a heavy but pure tone which is cool

  • @bulldogsforeva its a jeff beck sig, the lighter coloured pickguard and the nut give it away

  • wow pretty amazing! I wish I could touch those guitar strings like that!

  • Beefcake with soulful eyes playing one sexaaaay geeeeetar. OMG, what more does a woman, foooking need.?

  • Where's the new music john?!

  • hey man youre an amazyng musician, god bless you!!

  • Hey guys can anyone figure out what X7 shapes hes using from 1:02 to 1:27 ?? I still can't figure it out but I do think its an interesting and catchy voicing for a dominant chord especially in this version he plays of xroads.. Any help would be appreciated

  • i like how at the ende hes like "lets try it".so he wasnt even being serious in this?it was just him messin around..damn

  • i shit myself when i heard the part that starts at 2:11

  • @Guitar1hero23 I had already shat my pants at 2:03

  • That smokin

  • i dont get the britney spears joke

  • @bjhMus1C reAD the discription

  • @seanshowtime1996 Britney spears had a movie called "crossroads".. which is what he's referring to

  • If anyone is frustrated with not been able to get the Guitar to do what you want it to, then i suggest you turn this off immediately.

  • what petal(s) are being used here?

  • i could give a crap about the critics say...this dude has more soul and groove in his playing that 95% of musicians in the mainstream media...very egotistical but that's his decision...the dude has mad chops and deserves the mad props...this tone is retardedly awesome and his groove and mastery of playing muted is what keeps me going after so many of his sounds and abilities to add to mine

  • you guys need to see this watch?v=a0xaO5AJRsc !!!!!!!!! (O.o)

  • Thats definitely becomes the "Heartbreak Warfare" Strat later. Its got the metal nut on before the headstock and its the same color. All it's missing is the Heartbreak Warfare logo that probably hasnt even been thought of in this video yet!

  • Wth, hows he get such a crackly sound like that

  • @Sqkeeky pete cornish ng2 pedal its like 900 bucks and you have to order it from pete cornish himself and he handmakes it at his house

  • @A7X514 I know John is using a NG2 for Crossroads, but when I listen the sound demo's on Pete Cornish' website, then I hear a completely different tone. More like heavy metal. Does John just have set the NG2 on other settings, or a load of other things on why the sound is so different? I'm just wondering because Crossroads is one of my favorite songs, especially when he plays it live.

  • @LeNickNL He rolls the volumeknob on his guitar down like halfway.

  • this is sick... nough said.

  • @Illzehcnaslll, I already knew but thank you anyway ;) can't wait to hear some new music from JM, want him to come back to Sydney!

  • Crossroads "served as the inspiration for a Britney Spears movie"

    lol, thats funny

  • ok to be absolutely honest at the time i posted that comment i didnt know Clapton did Crossroads :p I know ridiculous right but I've known now for a while, played a mash up of JM and Clapton's Crossroads for my final music exams

  • @elysiaaisyle Robert Johnson did Crossroad - Cream ( fix/Cover Crossroads) - John Mayer (Cover) ..

Info: for your final music exams

  • Look at Chad Franscoviak's ferocious B ed Head! haha

  • How the hell does John do 2:10-2:16?

  • @onlyonetigger I know I wish my fingers were that fast

  • that lick at 2:03 is sweet

  • @fenderdude137 Seriously one of the sickest licks I've ever heard.

  • @sgood83

Ya lk fr srsly! Wen I herd th frst 1 I wiz lk wtff??? Idk y ths didnt get pickd. Wl obvi nt ths cuz he stoped in th midl but u kno, sumping similar.

Johnny baby you're right there. Whaddafuh'supwidaaaat?

  • insane right hand rhythm..

  • i would do anything to learn his rhythmic style

  • that quick little lick he does at the very end is so awesome.

  • and the john mayer crossroads was put into formation on my birthday, what are the chances!

  • now that I've heard it without the vocals it reminds me of a Clapton song..

  • @elysiaaisyle please tell me you are joking. you are joking right?

  • I'm really surprised this jam isn't as popular as the two rock slow dancing demo

  • I want to twiddle the knobs in the background

  • JAMMIN OUT!

  • Interesting to see that way before Battle Studies he had fragments of a solo (there's a lick at the start which is in the solo) and that altered dominant chord that he uses in the chord sequence.

  • 2:11 that lick is just insane. has anyone breaken it down?

  • @davidcarr90 yeah holy crap.

  • dude it is insane..i think it looks like hes running up the minor pentatonic scale just at super human speeds..ill try to break it down.

  • It is just a minor penatonic scale,

  • but the sound is awesome.

  • hahaha my bad i hadnt watched the video all the way through. hahaha. wheres clapton at man?

  • it sounds like crossroads

  • "Here we are working out a version of "Crossroads", which you might remember served as the inspiration for a Britney Spears movie."

    Haha, brilliant:)

  • this version is waaaay better than the album cut... self-producing you'd think he would have chosen a middle ground instead of a forced solo like on Battle Studies

  • word

  • Is the fuzz pedal the only effect he is using?

  • Cornish NG-2 Fuzz

  • i hate the solo on battle studies for crossroads.

    so much.

    but i love john mayer..

    so much.

  • Crossroads.. . . ish. . .

Well, bought tickets to see you in london and in copenhagen. Take care. Hope it'll be ass good as in 08.

  • ooh you are so lucky to have tickets to the copenhagen concert... I've waited for years to have him play in Denmark, but I missed the date for the sale :(

  • He was in DK in 08 as well

  • okay... i guess i'm not that grat a fan anyway... but I really wanted to go this next time

  • what fuzz pedal is he using for that?

  • Cooler sounding than his overproduced record version

  • Exactly what I was thinking.. This version is great, but the record version, it's too clean, neat and perfect for my tastes!

  • @paldenno1 the record version wasnt overproduced at all

  • @seanshowtime1996 You think the recorded version sounds close to a live version?

  • @paldenno1 i didnt say that. i said it wasnt over produced.his live versions are much better, but thats true for all of his songs. just cause i doesnt sound like his live versions doesnt mean its overproduced. it still has its own thing.

  • @seanshowtime1996 It has it's own thing. A sound polished until it got lifeless. And that is in my opinion; an overproduced sound.

  • think it is a JM sig and not a JB !

  • It is the jb masterbuilt.

  • yep, jeff beck sig!

  • jeff beck sig?

  • why didn't they put this on the record??? besides the obvious that we've already heard this...

  • @sgood83 If you have Battle Studies, you'll realize that this is "Crossroads" and it's on the album

  • DAYUM!! I'm in heaven!!

  • i think the final outcome of crossroads on the album is awesome! great job

  • man I love to just set the drum machine on and jam to this to my hearts content.

  • Gah!! I want to know what pedals he was using!!! Crossroads!! You Sick song, you!

  • My guess is a Pete Cornish Fuzz.

  • taste, skills, and time... what else can you ask for?!

  • 1:01 = jizz

  • WOW! 1:43-1:50 is so HOT! *faints*

  • I haven't exactly placed my finger on it quite yet, but the tone didn't quite come out so awesome on the album as it did here, like I can still listen to this on repeat all day it's just so raw, and on the album it's just so soft and it just does nothing to me, the live version is awesome though !

  • I totally agree with you the new album lacks the raw tone of continuum it sounds to over produced !

  • Yeah you're right. I think one of the big differences is for the album tone it seems like he didn't use any reverb or slight delay. The tone kinda lacks depth compared to this one. This one rocks. You can hear the "room".

  • You got that right, girl!! YUM!!

  • @tissuechang I completely agree! The guitarsound on the album seems so much more narrow and boxed, and not so raw as on here...pitty..

  • anyone have an idea what chord shapes he's making at 1:04 ?

  • he does!

  • this sounds like his take on clapton's "woman tone". especially when you hear the album version. there is almost no treble in his tone. i didn't like the album version at first, but im coming around to it now. i've always liked this version though. just now noticed that the tone is very similar, he just plays the notes much more staccato-ed in the album version.

  • Crossroad :D

  • This will be a great track on "Battle Studies". Excited

  • which pedal is he using?

    i really love this sound!

  • pete cornish g2

  • fuzz!

  • yeah, i heard that ;)

but i mean which precise pedal...it might be the cornish g2...not sure

  • Jeff Beck strat?

  • way cool dirty/poppin' tone...

  • he's so groovin

  • GAHHHH the things I would do to get this tone! 1:52 on made me cream my man panties.

  • More like multiple orgasms

  • orgasm

  • That sounds Amazing

  • Anyone have any clue what kind of overdrive he is using on this? Cornish maybe? or a regular fuzz face of some kind?? I have no idea myself...

  • what a nice popcorn-like overdrive tone

  • The version you did with Clapton live in the park is ridiculous. I'm hoping there is a version of this on the new album. Kind of like how "Bold as Love" was on continuum. love listening to a change in the arrangement yet there is enough original for it to be nostalgic.

    Tour in New Zealand dammit.

  • It is going to be on there!

  • wat u mean? it looks like a studio

  • 345 yrs....is that all?

  • 2:03. Hell yes.

  • haha i thought the same thing

  • i can't stop refreshing this page, holy wow.. i want to learn this, but it will take me 345 years ... lol

  • wow thats some sick tone

  • this is crossroads lol

  • didnt see the extra info he had :X

  • I dont think the pedal does anything. Turn up a valve amp and you'll see!

  • Great, I love it! :)

  • 2:03 and on is BAD ASS

  • fuckin beast.

  • is he improvising before crossroads or is that written. i'm a beginner so i don't know what to expect.

  • He's improvising. (Wow, I know. :)

  • Fricken' Hell. Seriously? One, that's dope! Two, that's almost depressing because it makes me realize just how much farther away from that level i am. It's one thing to learn a song and master it or even take a week to write it and master it but to look like a master when you're doing it off the top of your head, well that's pretty good.

  • seriously?

  • Any tips on getting this crunchy tone?

  • buy a pete cornish NG-2 ....run you well over 500$

  • He doesn't use that does he?

  • He has the Cornish SS-3/NB-2 Duplex....Not NG-2

  • lol then why did u ask what to use to get the same sound if you knew?

  • Is that what he uses to get this sound? I just thought you got the two mixed up so i corrected you.

  • i get an identical tone from a 87 marshall jcm 800 and line 6 m13...use your fingers too

  • pete cornish...

  • Dude, let me just say: AWSOME!

  • This is so good but it's prolly just a warm up to him. What a fucking beast !!!!

  • You ain't lyin' And remember back when cats where like yeah he's crap. he sucks blah blah blah. Sure as hell shows you not to jump to conclusions

  • This right here is what makes me wish I didn't fail at playing the guitar. I don't know a whole lot about guitars, but I do know that this is incredible. Wow, I'm speechless.

  • awesome

  • 1:01 - 1:07

    I came.

  • omg me too.. for me though 1:51- 2:15

  • TOTALLY AGREE... When he slides up to like the 22nd fret on the end of the 3rd phrase... GOD DAMN!

  • just like steve himself said, "If a beat feels good you can hear a song before any other instruments are even played." that's why john said, "One thing about Steve Jordan, you never know when you're going to up and record a track."

  • 2:04!

  • FUK YEAH, That tone, I just wish I had a good electric guitar, doing everything acoustic doesn't give me that crunchy blues sound.

  • 1:42-1:50 is freakin HOT. Those are some moves...

  • this is badass man love it

  • how does he get such a crunchy sound? any guesses on what gear he might be using? if so please let me know, thanks!

  • probably some type of fuzz pedal.

  • The fuzz pedal he typically used for this song on tour is the Pete Cornish NG-2 Fuzz. I assume that's what he's using, but obviously don't know for sure.

  • Crosswords is a tune that has been composed by Robert Johnson, a bluesman that lived in the 30's. Clapton made a famous version of it in the 60's, when he played with the Cream.

  • Awesome job Mayer!

  • .."here we are working out a version of "Crossroads", which you might remember served as the inspiration for a Britney Spears movie.".. ha classic

  • CROSSROADS

  • OMG I LOVE YOU!!!! you are a genius as a person and a songwriter! LOVE YOU!!

too bad i misssed u when u came to hk :( hopeful i can catch u in toronto. :D

  • Britney.... gimme a break!! The song also inspired the 1986 movie called after the song where Ralph "Lightning Boy" Macchio (aka Karate Kid) searches for Robert Johnson's lost song. Also featuring Steve Vai. Great movie. Great song.

    Nice version John!

  • This video was posted by Mayer himself. Mayer is one of the most talented bluesplayers today. He probably watched the 1986 movie a million times. Relating this song to an utterly crappy movie starring britney spears is a little thing called humour. You should try it, it's fun.

  • Owh yea.

    This is how knowledge sounds.

  • Exactly.

  • One word: amazing.

  • It also helps when you study Jazz Guitar at Berkeley. But the man breathes guitar, regardless of his education. Every new album is a completely new journey into the world of music. It's never the same sound. He's the genius of our generation.
