  • No mention of Zero Mission for the GBA ? It(s a relake of this one with a major technical update, much less tedious exploration mechanics, and a few added challenges.

  • I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! I'm 23 years old and my first system was an NES bought from a yard sale and every now and then my parents would take to this local cd/music/game store where they had an entire wall of used NES games for sale.. one of those particular times I got Metroid.. I loved this game as a kid but it was much too hard (and still is) I did beat the remake on GBA but ofcourse it was a little easier to get through

  • It was also a great inspiration to the greatest platform rpgs of all time - CastleVania: Symphony of the Night !!

  • Another great review, love Metroid and I played it to death as a kid. I wonder what you think about Turrican series on Amiga, which as you already, know where highly influenced by Metroid.

  • This is a great example of a game that spawned sequels that outclassed it in every way. As much as I love it, some of its sequels are among the most incredible games that I've ever experienced.

  • Hi Matt, you know?, I have become a fan of yours since a watched your interview with John Romero, now i keep watching your videos from the very first until this for now.

I find your history videos very interesting.. :D

Also i would like you to do something about Turok, i'm a great fan of that game, and i have read in the internet that it was the very first FPS 3D game, and the others FPS before him are considered 2.5D games, could you make that more clear to me please? because i dont know why :(

  • This is just to let you know: I care about this stuff and would like to see more! ^_^

  • The intro music still makes me tingle inside :P Great video mate it really takes me back.

  • this game was about 10 years ahead of it's time

  • @charger619c I agree, way ahead of its time.. it's crazy how elaborate they could get on the NES.

  • one of the classics that I've never finished :S I need to get my ass into gear.

    Great video Matt :)

  • Get the varia suit before fighting kraid..also you should have at least 4 energy tanks...you can get a fifth right there in his lair....just bomb the shit outta him...

  • Got this game when i was about 8. Was hell difficult haha. Never got very far but was def one of the greatest games!

  • why on metroid is there a yellow sticker and a gray one?

  • Metroid!

I remember when that came out... Metroid and Kid Icarus were launched at the same time. I got Metroid, my friend got Kid Icarus... Great games, both... but Metroid always stands out to me... and I guess for many others given how one franchise took off, and the other didn't.

  • How cool! I still love Metroid to this day :) Very nice video!

  • this was da best dan game i ever played

  • Nice Video :) Kraid is even harder than the mother brain imo.

Metroid M The new Metroid game that is comming seems to me a micture of 2D perspective and 3D perspective I hope it will turn out great like the rest of the Metroid games :)

  • Just to let you know, I'm having Dungeons and Desktops, and Vintage Games coming to my local library. I may even purchase it if it's as quality as your youtube videos.

Keep up the good work Matt.

  • Though it was a great stepping stone for future games, it is by far the worst metroid I played. This game is beyond tedious. Not being able to shoot under or next to you and having no map are some of things that could of been easily fixed. Other then nostalgia, get super metroid.

  • I agree. Super Metroid took all the concepts and made them better. Still, nostalgia and historical interest are powerful motivators! :)

  • @tommyboy31885 It was a great start for the series, you must see the year when it was published and the games back then. I agree with some things you said but you must see things into context

  • Great game and a great video as well! Don't feel bad Matt. I haven't beaten that guy either. One of these days I am going to get serious and play through the whole game.

  • Hehe; well, I know I beat them all back in the day. It's not that hard once you get enough energy packs and so on. The hard part (for me, at least) was keeping track of where I was in the world.

  • i love this and super metroid and the gb titels

  • Great review! Metroid is my all-time favorite video game series! My favorite game being Metroid Fusion. I just hope that Nintendo goes back to it's roots and creates another 2D Metroid game just as Sega did with Sonic.

  • Maybe now that Mario Wii is so popular, we'll start to see more 2D games. I'd love that!

  • A true classic. One of my favorite games of all time. You did a great review of the game!

  • Thanks so much, Jeremy! Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Ah Metroid! I've only played one game and it's one of my most beloved franchises.

I discovered the series with Metroid Prime because I never had a SNES and feel in love with the immersive setting right away.

I have already picked up the 2 GBA games and as soon as I buy a NES again it's on my top 5 list.

  • I've been playing Metroid Prime Hunters on my DS a bit. Certainly an interesting control setup. I'd love to get the Metriod game for the Wii.

  • i didn't care for the Hunters controls at all :(

As a general rule I fell most of the time games would control better without the stylus.

  • awesome vids man

  • Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • Another terrific review, thanks Matt!

  • You're welcome, Richard!

  • Great video, have you tried the remake on Gameboy Advance? It's called Metroid Zero Mission and is a great remake. There is two upcoming Metroid games for Wii that you may be interested. The first is Metroid prime Trilogy, which is all of the Prime series on one disk. The second is Metroid:The other M coming in 2010 and it looks OUTSTANDING!

  • I haven't tried the remake, but would like to try it out on my DS if I get the chance. The new Metroid game definitely sounds exciting.

  • Hey Matt, these are some great video you have here. I will have to go back and see some of your previous ones. All in all, I think metroid series is good one. I hate that Nintendo has not targeted an older audience with their wii system. Here are some of my favorite games if you want to do shows on them. Final Fantasy 7 or 8. Lost Vikings Twisted Metal Zelda Shemune Powerstone panzer dragoon just to name a few classics.
  • Thanks for the suggestions! I am familiar with many of those. I have Shenmue on the Dreamcast, and love Lost Vikings.

  • Matt, I think Lost Vikings is your next review!

  • Ah, one of my favorites. We'll see, we'll see. :)

  • Another great video. I've been enjoying the series! Please keep this project going :).

  • Thanks, 6strinkmonk! I really appreciate the comments and feedback.

  • I'm inspired to play this game now

  • One of the great things about games like Metroid is that you can be up and playing them in seconds with no hassle. I love that "pick up and play" style.

  • Another cool video, Matt!

I had friends that loved Metroid, but to me, it was too much wandering around and such and finding hidden passageways. I'm too dumb for that stuff, preferring my action games to be more straight-ahead.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Yes, it is definitely hard to play without a good map. Fortunately, great maps are freely available online.

  • Which Pysgnosis game? I think I know which one you mean (futuristic, metallic goat-type hero?) but I can't for the life of me remember its name.

  • I was thinking of Shadow of the Beast primarily. :)

  • Actually, that was the one. just did an image search. My 'metallic goat-type hero' recollection was a little off! Sort of Gygaresque (Alien). If there was an influence, Nintendo definitely did one of their 'cartoonifcations' with Metroid! Thanks Matt.

  • Very Good. Thank you very much for uploading this. :)

  • You're welcome.

  • Nice one, Matt! Another excellent review. Unfortunately, not being a Nintendo owner back in the day, I missed out on all these NES exclusives. I have vowed that one day I will go back and play through all these classics: Metroid, Castlevania, MegaMan, Zelda. I might have to wait until retirement though.

  • I didn't have an NES personally, but plenty of my friends did. I wish I had had access to more systems as a kid, though. I missed out on a lot.
