When I try to subdivide the plane it doesn't stay a square it turns into an octagon and waves as 4 triangles what am I doing wrong?

When you say, "very very small little wave" there is an even better adjective which is "subtle" you could say "A subtle wave" same point, less words, saves time!

Very nice tutorial thank you for posting it. you can add several of these to a plane and if you add a radial and a few X axis waves at different frequencies it become very easy to animate a flag fluttering in the wind.
