  • in the desert, they wash with sand.

  • Smoke baths only work with dried herbs and certain cacti.

  • @1Joyeux not true wood smoke kills most all germs if done right think of it as wood curing meat lol

  • why not use a shovel to dig a elimination hole?

  • Im just back from a 3 days survival camp trip. Sir, to hear your voice again teaching the skills of the wild makes my pulse go quicker and Im so thankful for what you are doing.

  • Does anyone know if you can get cryptosperidiom (spelling?) from rinsing your mouth with water from a river or stream? without drinking it on purpose of course.

  • aniamls can smell the meat in your piss. so to aniamls it means predators and smart aniamls are afraid of meat eaters. thats why deer dont live near wolf dens or coyotes they can smell thier piss and know its danger.

  • LONG LIVE DAVE CANTERBURY!!!!!

  • wouldn't there be a possibility of gettin any microorganisms inhabiting that pool in your eyes by just dipping that towel? or does its microfiberness come into play here somehow?

  • 85 degrees being hot? Man, in southern california hot is 100 degrees. I would love 85 degree weather in the summer

  • @ToddIngram1000 I grew up in the Midwest (Kansas City) and also lived in several places in California. 85F with nearly 100% humidity in the Midwest will kill you much faster than 100F+ and low humidity in most of California. Now if you're talking Sac I totally understand as the humidity can be just as bad of a problem but most of California is free from horribly high humidity throughout the hot summers.

  • Actually, if you have normal kidney function, your urine is well concentrated and should contain less than 1% Na (sodium). Your kidneys retain it very well. FeNa( fractional excretion of sodium) - google it. Just an FYI, great vid tho.

  • check my channel out got some out door vids comeing u guyses way, sub like my vids, and remember its free! link is to my new bug out video like it please.

  • a car shammy works really well as a common man micro fiber towel

  • Deuteronomy 23:12-13 Says Exactly What Dave Says In Regards To Relieving Ourselves Of Waste. It Even Mentions Using A Stick To Dig The Hole!

  • Did You Ever Make A Part 2 To This Video?

  • u were pretty firm about using nothing but a stick to dig a hole to defecate in, why is this?

  • @mrouterrim so u dont get dook on ur tools lol.

  • 10:50 lmao!

  • Dave Canterbury Great Video's Keep Up the Good Work Bro.

  • Dual Survival is my favorite show!

  • what about the old stainless canteens I have had good luck with the two I have.

any probs. you know of with those?

I boil them out all the time.

  • haha this guy will be the only guy left after the apocalypse.. he'll be wearing bear grylls' skin like a coat lol

  • When I was in the Gulf I had my parents mail me stridex. They worked like a charm. Also, after having some foot issues I began changing socks 2 or 3 times a day. Just my 2 cents.

  • Field Sanitation and Hygene Part 2 ????

  • Hahaha, at 8:13 as soon as he said the word "bugs" when he was talking about how bugs and things can get stuck on your head a fly landed on his head. It's like the bug was just sitting there listening to him and as soon as the bug heard it's name it was like, "Oh shit that's my que!"

  • VIKTOR REZNOV ;D

  • I shit where I eat... I'm a police officer

  • staying clean is a must, but if you want to hunt better get rid of the fragrance soap, every animal around can detect you coming!

  • @melonbro it dosent matter what i type at least im watching the video and its people that bitch at comments that piss me off

  • Dave: did you ever get around to making part 2? Part 1 is sort of left hanging, bro.

  • What if you're wearing moccasins?

  • your on dual survival

  • @SEGAFANBOY7

We have had plenty of those annoying comments.

People like you just annoy the shit out of me.

Posting, "Great video!", would be way more productive than the obvious

  • Excrements are territorial markers. Scattering them around is an act of challenge and domination. doing so in a territory where dominant animals rule ( e.g. bears, lions, etc. ) means looking for troubles.

  • Dave, youre my hero.

  • but if the water has bacteria or otherwise, like river water,is it safe to wash your face {just in case it gets into your eyes, etc} with that water just like that?

or do you need to purify it before you wash your face?

  • im a big advocate of the squat and waddle, it eliminates the need for leaves, or dirty hands, however it makes navigating through the forest more dificult.

  • i like it. learn together. oh how nice it would be to be free of office politics, the gridline, and government!...one of these days!

  • Thank you Dave, I learned a lot from this video's of you.!! Ihope to see many more of your vids, they are great !! Wish you good luck!!

  • oddly enought you can use smoke as a scent mask because animals are used to the smell of wood smoke because wildfires are a natural process of nature.

  • lol, Hippies with lots of ticks.

Toothpaste is unnecessary. I just keep brushing, running floss and rinsing.

Rinsing and washing every day is compulsory for me.

  • I thank God for you and what you do............keep teaching brother.

  • why dig your cathole with a stick? why not use a shovel?

  • If you get shit on your shovel your are carying that around and it could make you sick, plus save money to spend on toher things

  • This is brilliant stuff.

  • with a little labor, in the desert with limited water, or cold winter days, a sweatlodge and body scraper are ideal. I second the baking soda.

  • ownly problem is its hard to find somewhere thats in the middle of no where. ive checked and it seams that every hill and valley in oregons forests has a road on it. ownly place thats remotely far away from anything is paradise lodge area on the rouge river.

  • F tripple digets, and thats why i live in oregon

  • same i live in eugene just a short drive to many lovely places

  • lol down here in texas 85 is actually pretty cool weather. im used to triple digits. great vid dave

  • most invigerating way to wash is skinny dipping in a scottish sea, mid-winter..

disclaimer... please do not try this if your pregnant, suffer from a heart condition, on any medication or a pussy.

  • damn man great vid keepit up

  • Man I would love to feel 85 while out in the wilderness. Last week when I was out. (vids pending) it was triple digits.

  • An item I usually carry is baking soda. its multipurpose: use as toothpaste, footpowder, prob. even deodorant if that was necessary. use it as an antacid to settle your stomach. use it with an acid to make bread rise (acid-base reaction) I've used apple blossom petals, which contain hydrocyanic acid, with baking soda to make ash cakes more fluffy, less cracker like.

  • @northeastforager Ain't science great? Better living through chemistry. Think I might prefer capturing wild yeast for the bread though... .

  • I've had good results from using the leaves of Japanese Honeysuckle as soap. I take a handfull, twist them up a lil, wet them, and then squeeze out the juice. gives some suds. Certainly is a lot easier to find in quantity than yucca or soapwort.

Also, don't know if you have it in your area, but I've been using the Variegated Horsetail as a toothbrush, and I'll tell ya, it's real swell. supposed to strengthen the enamel too. Grows like crazy along the Housatonic River floodplains.

  • Where those whitetail deer in the beginning of the video, by the way? They look pretty cool, we don't have those here.

  • Dave, why did you say you have to use a stick to dig a hole? I can understand why you shouldn't do that with your knife (rocks in the ground will dull the blade), but why not with a shovel / E-tool?

  • thats true but then you would have to wash off and use moss to sterilize your what ever tool you use so you don't attract insects and contaminations .

  • Using just a dry towel to scrub off the goo and then hanging it in the sun is helpful in the high desert.

  • You mentioned the plastic canteen again. I had some issues with them in the Corps and use metal ones now.

What would be the advantage of the plastic canteen?

I know the aluminum ones I have should last as long as I wil ever need them.

  • Actually the only advantage of Plastic is 1. Availability and 2 The new Nalgenes are Clear so you can see contents. Aluminum has been linked to Alzheimers-SS Would be great but New ones are not made and Old ones are hard to find except in Arctic Versions.

  • @wildernessoutfitters dude that aluminum thing is a myth. aluminum is one of the most common elements in the earth's crust and contained in most plants, and thus animals. if you eat anything, you eat aluminum

  • @aseglkj Correction. We eat aluminum in microscopic particle size broke down to the smallest elements from plants and animals. Aluminum is one of the essential minerals we need but taken in high doses is very toxic. Those high doses come from overuse of aluminum products. Arsenic is a nutrient our body uses and in tiny colloidal microscopic size it's harmless. It all breaks down to the dosage size. We get copper from our diets too, but do you think eating pennies wouldn't make ya sick?

  • @HollowForm222 you are right in that anything can be toxic if eaten in high enough doses. People have died from drinking too much water or eating spoonfuls of table salt. But there is no reason to be concerned about aluminum canteens, because unless you put something acidic in there, your aluminum exposure will be miniscule compared to the amount you get from nature itself.

  • @wildernessoutfitters Alzheimers has not been proven from aluminum toxicity. There is a greater link to cerebral inactivity. Playing chess, Sudoku, crosswords, even video-games seem to alleviate the deterioration. It appears predominantly to be a genetic condition.

All the same, I wouldn't give up a dutch oven for the aluminum equivalent. Heavy to carry, but exceptionally versatile.

  • @aaronpetersutherland nothing is a genetic condition. thats dumb. the genes are always present, and are either on or off, the genes are the expression of the illness not the other way round.

  • @AbattoirDream With a call sign like "AbattoirDream" it assumes you care about nothing more than the dissemination of misinformation, toxicity and an overall desire to see people die. You show me your credentials about genetics and I'll find you the periodicals from professionals in the field that support my statements. Genetics predispose people to conditions. That's evolution. A diabetic father has a huge chance of having his progeny carry the same disease.

    Kind regards

  • @aaronpetersutherland didnt mummy ever tell you not to judge a book by its cover? i didnt think the name up, stop jumping to WELL OVER THOUGHT conclusions, fool.

bruce lipton, the biology of belief.. go watch it. genetics IS what creates malfunctions in the body, but its not the first link in the chain, your BRAIN effects genetics, your genetics effect your body, thats it. i misworded what i said, i literally meant an illness is an effect of the genes, but the genes arent the initial source.

  • @wildernessoutfitters plastic doesnt dent also.

  • @wildernessoutfitters The Alzheimers link is looking pretty unlikely as information/understanding grows. Still even though heavier, SS has a bunch of benefits over crappy Aluminium stuff. Melting point, durability etc. A magnet can be used to test for real SS, it shouldn't stick.

Yay for micro-fibre!! People don't understand bacteria, many think that detergent kills bugs (it dissolves grease). Anything clean (free from hiding holes/food/water), exposed to UV, will be disinfected.

  • re: plastic, avoid recycling numbers 3, 6, 7 outright, avoid 1, 2 if possible. Aim for 4, 5.

  • I love it. This may be your best, plain spoken, video yet.

I think it hit the nail dead on the head.

Common sense goes a long way in the wilderness, and in life.

  • woah that bird was getting in on that wrap up at the end

  • 10:42 "whore bath" lol....priceless!

  • Comment removed

  • I also want to mention that good nail clippers are really cheap. Most have a little hole at the end that you can put a key ring on and carry on your EDC and they are small enough to stash away in a first (or last) aid kit. Nail clippers are a multi purpose item too. I carry one in my tackle box to trim fishing line. You could trim a hanging thread, arrow fletching, annoying whiskers, etc.

  • A little something that I will ALWAYS carry with me and value as much as a sharp knife and paracord are nail clippers. I know that sounds silly and I'm sure it's often overlooked but they can be of great value for good hygiene because having neatly trimmed nails prevents bacteria and infection from growing and being transfered to say an eye if you scratch it. Plus having 2" long nails and your only option is biting them isn't good for you or your morale. Just my humble opinion.

  • Dig your poop and pee trench downhill from your camp. That way, if a hard rain comes along, you don't wake up in poop or pee washing down hill. E coli is one nasty bug you don't want traveling from someone else to you.

Deodorants contain bacteria killing chemicals. You can use roll-on deodorant on where skin meets skin (under flabby skin, crotch, or under breasts) to keep bacteria count down and rashes nearly nonexistent. You can put deodorant on mild scrapes or over tick or bug bites.

  • "Don't wash your crouch, then go wash your face. It's not rocket science." -Ha

  • i agree yellow springs is a beautiful place to take a nice relaxing walk

my sis lives on the base so we go there when i visit

  • Hmmm I think I'm going out to get a hair cut now.

  • A 1gallon ziplock freezer bag with a small hole in it is great for this. Fill up the bag, walk your 50 feet away from the water source, use a little on your towel, wash, ring out the towel. use more water on towel, repeat. You brought the water away from the source before using.

The 1 gal. bag is so light it is definitely worth it.

  • With Making the Sling Bow Cant you get some Company's to make it but say i want a certain % of the profit made or something?

  • That Blue Jay at the end sounds pretty mad.... Watch your head.....lol

  • what do you recomend for a substitute toletpaper?

  • Leaves, Grtass, Sticks, Pine Cones, Smooth Rocks....etc

  • @wildernessoutfitters PINE CONES! OUCH haha What about rabbits? I hear sh*t doesn't stick to their fur .....or is that just in the old 'bear walking through the woods' joke?! :D

  • @wildernessoutfitters Pine cones? You're a hard man, Dave.

  • I am of the female persuasion so

I got a GOGIRL so I could pee standing up when out and about. I have had 90% success with it and the rest left me peeing down my leg. Got to get the seal just right. Over all not bad.

I fined handy wipes and hand sanitizer to be lovely too. Pack out the wipe.

I know it is not survival stuff but both are very tinny and light. It is just nice for us girls I think.

  • My Girls carry an Elongated Auto type funnel .99cents and a pack of Travel Baby wipes, Great for them and you it sounds like! Thanks for your comment.

  • We carry the baby wipes for the wife and daughter, but I insist that she get/use scentless. Mainly for bugs/flies, in the northeast we're getting the humid season, and scentless product help cut down the attraction. We have a kit that we use camping/hunting, basically anything outdoors, everything is scentless (deodorant, shampoo, soaps, baking powder toothpaste, no hairspray/gel, perfume evething), not only does it help with the creapy crawlies, but also the bears, squirrell, and other game.

  • LOL!!! Love the Hippie comment! Next time you travel to Dayton you should stop in Yellow Springs - hippie capital of the Midwest!

  • i love yellow springs, been to dayton many times, can't stand the city but yellow springs was a good time.......beautiful area when ya get out a ways....N.W. Ohio here:)

  • great foundational video...thanks Dave

  • another great video .

  • our forest service specifically says to pee on a rock, why do you say i shouldnt?

  • As I said the animals like the Salt, so if you want them around camp-Pee on a Rock!

  • alright theres no need for exclamation points, i wasnt trying to prove you wrong i just didnt know the reasons, i do subscribe to your videos by the way i think you do a great job with them

  • No offense intended brother>

  • the man

  • you're watchin these vids for the intro???

  • "If you wanna be a hippie, I'm cool with that". Ha, that's so funny. I have dreadlocks and I go on treks very often. And yes, ticks do attach to my scalp alot.

  • thats really nasty, you should try to get some thin fabric or something to keep them out. just saying, nobody wants to hang out with a tick head haha

  • Ummm, how exactly is that nasty? It's just like having ticks attached to any other scalp, they're just harder to locate and get out.

  • Thank You Sir... For All You Teach

  • YEAH.... He DID!!!!!!!!!!!

  • did he say "whore bath" ? lol

  • very good video

    thanks.

  • jungle rot is a bitch gi wool socks are the greatest to me anyways

  • Dave, great video. It had actually slipped my mind that you could use smoke and sun to disinfect your clothes, even though I knew that was a way of disinfecting water and dealing with trench foot. I should have put 2 & 2 together, but thanks for the great reminder.

  • have you used a powder called zea zorb it is a anti-fungul powder that works wonders on rashes, wet feet, chaffed skin and ringworms, its kinda expensive but alittle goes a long way, also dave would you get a becker bk2 or a rat 3 if you already have a large survival knife(ka-bar heavy bowie) just wondering what you would do.

  • Dave, Do you use any kind of bug dope? I was out in the woods for two days last week and the ticks are bad in this part of OH. I shave my head so no prob there but I picked about 20 off my clothes!

  • All military manuals stress the fact that one should be wearing clean, dry socks; however, that admonishment soon becomes a bit of a hoot.

Under field conditions, when you have wet boots, your clean, dry socks will quickly become dirty, wet socks. Face it, fellows! Being in the bush means being dirty and often wet. Theres no hot shower waiting for you at the end of the day.

  • Thank you for sharing Dave! Rated as well. :)

  • Very informative,

Can you make a video on how to make soap in the wilderness?

  • he already has made a video on how to make soap in the wilderness. LOL!

  • Not sure why all the talk about humans suited for environment. If you don't want to wear cloths and shoes then I guess don't then, but leave the rest of us alone. Great vid Dave, I was wandering what you carried for teeth brushing.

  • if you do have athletes foot, smoke your feet or soake your feet in old mans beard and hot water

  • Also, for the slingbow, if you make one that is more custom, I will buy it.

I have heard of people using pulleys and latex flat bands to increase tension. The pulleys would allow you to have a longer band, but keep the band tight from the Y split. You can also just use one band instead of two for this method. There is one guy on youtube that has made slingshots like this with pulleys, and those things are seriously strong.

  • Some people may be offended by my assertion that Man is an animal. If you are religious and believe that we are made in God's image etc. Can you tell me why He designed us to be so unsuited for our environment? I think that Man is a tropical species by design. We were meant to live in areas where we could go about naked and barefoot. Africa, South America,Asia, Australia, South Pacific etc.

  • I am a Christian and have no problem being called an animal, man is King of the Beasts because we have the Brain and Reasoning to adapt to changes in our world that have caused many weaker beasts to become extinct. That is why as the saying goes the MOre you Know the Less you Carry.

  • That's easy, when we were designed, humans were living in a beautiful tropical paradise(the garden of Eden). Now we are horribly suited to our environment.

  • I got a question on the blowgun from a while back:

I got the 1/2 pvc pipe with connector, but I couldn't find a wire cap that would fit. I was wondering if the regular blowgun ammo would work.

  • If you watched the video you need schedual 80 PVC Outdoor specific for wall thickness. Or you can use paper cones for you current PVC

  • I used 1/2" PVC, it was outdoor specific, but it doesn't fit the electric wire caps that I found at the home depot.

  • Why does mankind have such trouble living in the wild? Our ancestors managed it for tens of thousands of years just fine. Why does man alone amongst all the other animals require clothes, shoes etc? No other animal requires a manufactured skin(clothes) or the skin from another animal. Look at the soles of your feet see how thick they are. Man was designed to go about barefoot. if we cannot go about barefoot and naked it is because we are living in a climate that is not suitable for man.

  • Our ancestors wore clothes as well man! Humans have evolved not having the outer Hair that early Hominids had for isulation. And if you think Neanders and Paleo man walked around in the snow barefoot you need more research, Google Otzi the Iceman. Humans have learned to Adapt and evolve to a world that has had harsh climactic and ecological changes, you dont do that bare foot and naked!!!!!!

  • im glad you decided to patent that thing, its a whole new kind of wep.

  • Another great vid Dave.. I put dental floss above a toothbrush in order of priority.. many uses with dental floss - junk caught between your teeth can drive you nuts and hurt too.. Hoo Ah

  • Thanks Dave . Its good to have info on how to keep clean . Nothing worse than feeling like a tramp when you're out in the woods for a while. I'm pleased you didnt try a crazy pot shot at the ram . I've heared of people shooting deer many times with a crossbow and it still didnt kill it because they shot the wrong areas . Kill zones are vital for hunting humanely !

  • Roflmaoooooooo.. "If you wanna be a hippie" .. That was too funny! Another great video Dave! And that canteen kit looks like to one I just ordered from ya..

  • Do you generaly caring TP with you? And if you use TP is it safe to burn it or with that just release a poopy plume into the air?

  • Another great video Dave...

  • In Vietnam, foot powder—Desenex—was absolutely a must in order to prevent ringworm. Dont be without it. Use the stuff liberally.

In war, sickness incapacitates and kills more people than bullets. Do take alcohol wipes with you to clean your hands after defecating. I never saw anyone in a combat environment do that. And failing to do that led to needless cases of dysentery.

  • bamboo socks! :D

  • great vid..

  • hey big man your poo can you burn it or dig it down what is the best thing

  • great vid man 5/5

  • Good video, thanks for covering some of the things some people might not think about. Or wouldn't want to mention.

  • I have heard to use hand sanitizer on your feet after a long hike, i carry some in my BOB.

  • i poop in my hand then just throw it up in a tree, works good with solids not too good with liquids

  • Lmao

  • Well, that explains your statement. Obviously none of it stuck up in the tree and it all fell back on your head.

  • its great for attracting animals, see i hunt bare handed, i find it to be the best for my liking. Saves weight, space. I have killed me game up to a bear with this method, small bear.

  • well i have been known to take a dozen beer in a single night, bare handed,(big ones)

  • whore bath!

  • rams? what state you have rams in?

  • I believe he's in Ohio. Big game sheep are all over the northern US and southern Canada. Colorado has some great Rocky Mountain Sheep hunting, from what I hear. A ram is a male sheep.

  • i know where he is, just did not know ohio has wild rams! im from Michigan and we do not have wild rams.

  • baking soda has tons of uses.

  • Don't urinate on plants that might be poisonous. Animals will come by and eat the plants while going after the salt in your urine. Pee on the dirt!

  • Dave, Thanks fol\r the info and updates. Hunting is just taking game. I would like to see footage of your hunt, the problems (Ram too fast, jump too high) and how you would overcome it, hunt other day or drive game to hidden hunter etc. I think your viewers can handle not connecting the first day.

  • Good video! thank you

  • Thank you

  • thank you and keep up the good work..

  • ok brother 85 degrees is fall here. We spent friday night in the woods and at midnight it was still in the high 90's with the daytime temp in excess of 104. Now thats hot!

  • favd and i must say, you are a very handsome man. (don't get worried, i'm very female). also subbed.

  • Awesome video Bro!

Great tips on taking care of yourself in a Buchcraft environment.

  • Great video thanks!

  • i like to bring a bar of soap, i wash my body, hair, and teeth with a bar of soap when camping or hiking. taists horrable but as long as gargle ur good.

  • Sorry for the stupid question but is there a video on how to build a fire ??

  • it s a great question. and yes there are many. just type how to build a fire in the search bar. many diff methods will show up. i have a video on how to make fireballs for easier fire making in the field.

  • Dave has over 200 videos. Some of them concern fire building. Check them out on his page.

  • A black trash bag filled with water and left in the sun makes a great shower. Just hang it up somehow and poke a small hole.

  • great idea. will even give you hot water.

  • is birch leaf soap good

    peace from belgium

you take som leafs put in a bag with gold water.wait 2 minutes. than ad hot water and shake a minute or 2

    dan wash with the water

  • Thanks Dave good info.!!

  • Another great video..sounds like things are going well with Discovery..hope so..good luck!
