I commend Portugal on its leap of faith regarding drug legalization. I hope it is successful. Having said thus, I look at Portugal and see it struggling just as bad as the rest of Europe if not worse. The intended endgame more revenue or behavioral adjustment is short lived. I support DPA, MPAA and the likes because I believe in helping people rather than punishing them for their choices and actions, especially when nobody is harmed from those actions. The problem in this situation is abuse, and that is what we need to act against. And we will not help people with abuse problems by penalizing users. We don't ban sex nor gambling simply because they can be abused, why should this be any different?

Yet, all users are penalized, normal people like you and me who prefer staying at home with friends rather than going out to get drunk and violent. Look to Portugal, who in 2001 legalized ALL drugs. Yes, anything. Meth, Heroin, Crack, all legal, with no penalty for use or possession. Do you think this leads to high drug usage? Take a look at the stats- They spend far less money, incarcerate far fewer people, have less overdoses and have less drug related health problems.

This is the right idea, that War on drugs-Just say know works about as corny as it sounds. If You really want to help stop the use of drugs get it out in the open and stop making the cartels rich. I've not heard of the liquor store owner or Circle K accepting stolen goods for trade but the dealers do and they are in the school yards selling to kids.

I say let's give them the drugs - all the drugs they want, any kind they want, whenever they want - and I'll even contribute my tax dollars to help pay for their habit. And then, when all their brains have completely turned to mush, those of us with clear heads and sound judgement will take our country back and run government based on our constitution - so go ahead, take your daily dose! I find this interesting. How does this theory work with the prescription pill mills that have created deadly cocktails and are pumping them out non stop into the community with the result being chemically dependent people that get caught up into what they believe is a "lnecessary ifestyle" and the deaths of 5++ people on a daily basis. I believe marigjuana needs to be legalized - period. To aid in the relief of glaucoma, the side effects of chemotherapy, and drug withdrawal.

@sbtobler The vast majority of drug arrests are against users with small amounts of drugs. We spend millions incarcerating non-violent drug offenders. Alcohol and cigarettes are the drugs that inflict the most damage on our society, yet they are legal. Making a substance illegal puts it in the purview of criminals, hence the violence. The war on drugs is a massive failure. Critical enough for you?

What's next.... supporting the NAMBLA alliance?? DPA is a sad commentary on society. Notice how they skipped over all the harm drugs do from overdoses, crack babies, drug related violence and crimes. In their warped analogy they believe that by legalizing drugs it will make all those other drug-related problems go away (which they know can't happen). So what is the true agenda? I support DPA, MPAA and the likes because I believe in helping people rather than punishing them for their choices and actions, especially when nobody is harmed from those actions. The problem in this situation is abuse, and that is what we need to act against. And we will not help people with abuse problems by penalizing users. We don't ban sex nor gambling simply because they can be abused, why should this be any different?

@noccy80 You cannot justify one bad thing with other bad things. People who use drugs make a choice. They knowingly violate the law and therefore must accept the consequences for their actions. Lots of people are hurt by drugs. The families of users as well as those from whom they steal to feed their habits are harmed. Dealers get kids hooked on drugs and ruin their lives. There is no justification for not executing those kind of people.

@CommonSenseJoe The law is still the problem, dealers and thieves are spawned from the existence of a black market, and they only represent a fraction of all users. Yet, all users are penalized, normal people like you and me who prefer staying at home with friends rather than going out to get drunk and violent. Read up on prohibition and the organized crime that arose from it. We both want to get rid of the same plague, but to do that we need a controlled market to replace the black market.

There is a difference between a dealer and a user, but only in degree. Both are breaking the law. Blaming the law is childish and flawed. Legalizing drugs only makes the problem worse, not better.

@CommonSenseJoe I am comparing alcohol with marijuana. And believe it or not, alcohol is one of the most destructive drugs that exist today. Also, if movies were to be banned today because some spent all their time in front of the TV set, would you accept that law without hesitation too and throw away your movie collection, television, and all that goes with it? If not, you would choose to be a criminal. But what would your crime be? And how would this benefit the people with the problems?

Your analogy to movies is flawed because I have never robbed a person in older to feed my movie habit. If there was such a law, I would obey it until I got changed.
