  • Its called a fan

  • ah! i saw this last month. It was really neat!!

  • Great work David. I saw it at Truck Gallery on the weekend. For those who cannot get to the gallery, I recommend having a look at your video of the piece in "free form" in Glenmore Park. The way the real wind changed the sculpture is so similar to the way you made it work in the gallery, with all those pulleys and gears. Again, great stuff.

  • Not to sound ignorant, but how does it work?

  • @drjhospital Short version is, each pole has a weight on the bottom so it wants to stay upright. If you attach a string to that pole and pull on it you can make the pole sway side to side. Now if you rope a bunch of them together, and have a big wheel with bumps on it pull on the cord you can make them all sway in unison. Change the bumps to change the pattern. Come to think of it that was a long version but hope that makes sense.

  • beautiful!

  • Amazing! Well done David! Can't wait to see it when I get to Calgary.

  • Really a nice work, good luck with the exhibition!

  • Hot damn, that's beautiful.

  • Stunning genius! Was this all done by trial and error or do you have an engineering background?

  • @TotallyVeracious Actually, my degree is in Jewellery and Metalsmithing, but didn't have to use much trial and error. I built prototypes to calculate the loads, multiplied by the number of units, added margins and built a drive train around that. The cam profile was worked out by building a model, and pulling on a cord. A lot of the design was done in Rhino 3D, so I had an idea on all the clearances before I started cutting.

  • nice!

  • really cool!!!

  • lovely, lovely work. Thankyou.

  • Genius!

  • WOw. It must take a whole lot of work to get the weights and mechanisms just right to recreate this motion of grass in the wind.

Next: A whole field full of 'em. :D
