Thanks to all who have posted comments on my AMT 1968 Ford Mustang GT500 build. I must first inform builders that this is an older late '60's AMT kit, where some of them were engineered to be non-rolling, with glue-in place front wheels. With a little extra work, working front steering and/or rolling front wheels are possible. Otherwise, it was a straight forward build and happy with the results.
This model is the first one I've gotten. I haven't started it but I was wondering... Do you have any tips for me? Especially for painting the dash because yours was extremely well-done.
IM working on this kit, but i didnt put harnesses or a roll cage in. i did put in though, a few pieces from revell's 68 GT. I used the engine brace, washer bottle, and interior from revell's 68 GT. i also used Testors Sapphire blue on it, bu ti t turned out slighty darker than my 69 GT500 painted in sapphire blue. Oh and i also used a gift card to help make it look more complete. Its still in the works but any way. Nice Job Man!
Hello@MadCheesecake, thanks for viewing and sharing your '68 Shelby build. I think it was brilliant of you to combine bits from Revell to the AMT '68 kit. I'd love to see your '68 Shelby posted when completed. For color, I used Tamiya TS-19 Metallic Blue, with Tamiya Clear gloss, polished with Novus2. I also trimmed the wheel openings with chrome paint, and added lower rocker panel trim from flat bar stock and BMF chrome. Enjoy the build! David
Hi David. You did one heck of a nice job with that kit. I've built several over the years to very good standard. I've always wanted to build a 67-68 Shelby but AMT is the only manufacturer that seems to make them. I have to say as an experienced builder that I cannot stand AMT kits. I don't like the way they fit; the detail and integrity is just somehow lacking. To each his own, right? Regardless, well done. You definitely made the most of what you had!
Hi Toodlem, thanks for your kind words! Working a 40+-year model kit revealed a lot of basic modification was required to complete this Shelby model kit! I think AMT's best years were early-mid 1960s, 1970's, and 1990s. Having built both AMT '67 and '68, the AMT/ERTL '67 Mustang GT and Shelby 350 are beautifully engineered and tooled in the 1990's, so you get CAD-accurate design and newer tool steel.
@davidleedesign hey david, this is an awesome model car you made! i have an pre-built 1968 ford mustang gt not the gt 500. also i have a porsche boxster S type 987, a ferrari 550 maranello 1996, and a 1957 corvette. the corvette broke, and all my model cars are pre-built. great job!
Awesome! Great! AMAZING!!!! i got the same set for x-mas but i don't have glue or spray paint :(. Good job though! :D
