If I had to take a guess, I think this problem affects around 5% of patients on statins in various degrees from very mild to complete loss of short-term memory. I would recommend that anyone on statins that thinks they are becoming 'mentally fuzzy' or if someone you love appears to 'be losing it' then you should take action before more damage is done. The YouTube site called the ‘Frank Cooper Health Show’ covers this subject and other cholesterol issues.
I am a Naturopath and author of the book "Cholesterol and The French Paradox" and very familiar with this problem. The reason there is some confusion on this issue, is that the drug companies do admit that statins cause 'short term memory loss' but the patient reading that assumes its merely a short-term memory problem. Wrong assumption! What happens is that your short term memory banks are permanently damaged, so you cannot remember what someone told you minutes earlier.
Please note the dry weight of the human brain is 8% pure cholesterol, so if you take statin medications to lower your cholesterol, than your brain may be affected. I am a Naturopath and author of the book "Cholesterol and The French Paradox". During my research I spoke to several women whose husbands took statins and they could no longer keep their jobs. They lost their ability to remember things they discussed ten minutes earlier! So they lost their jobs and were unemployable.
Statins destroy your coenzyme Q10, which is imperative for normal memory and brain function. I recommend a holistic Dr., or naturopathic doctor, for anyone who has problems with their heart.
What he meant to say is, 145,000,000 people are taking statins. Due to these large numbers, Pfizer has a lot of experience. He just got his words jumbled, it happens.
LOL! The medical (MD) correspondent is such a medi-pharma puppet...."The pharmaceutical company has 145,000,000 years of patient experience..." Experience in killing people whilst taking their money, LOL! "Talk to your doctor about lowering your dose" LOL! What? Talk to the very person who doesn't understand the body and want the patient to be tied to his practice by luring them with drugs? LOL! How sad. Seek chiropractic primary health care people! Safer and more effective.
I was in this Statin Effects Study, and the results were "Lipitor was the Likely causal contributor to the holes seen in my brain (biopsy) as well as the Mitochondrial DNA mutations...Cholesterol is an ABSOLUTELY essential NUTRIENT!! It is almost as preposterous as saying, we need to get rid of too much air!! Laughable!! Except these effects are real, and permanently disabled me at 34 years of age.
I HOPE YOU HAVE A MASSIVE SUIT GOING BECAUSE THERE IS TOO MUCH EVIDENCE OUT THERE WITH THE DAMAGE that these drugs can do to your CNS and peripheral system.......Nerves in your penis create NO to get an erection so if you have ED from one of these statins, then you can bet it's messing-up those nerves so stop taking them PRONTO!
We've seen Dr. Tim Johnson report on other medical alerts and he always takes the side of Big Medicine and Big Pharma. There is no such thing as "Bad Cholesterol". Cholesterol is not the reason for heart disease, chronic high blood sugar is the culprit. LDL is cholesterol leaving the liver to feed the cells whilst HDL are cholesterol returning to the liver to be recycled. The heart uses cholesterol for energy, Bile is cholesterol, hormones+ cholesterol, etc. We need cholesterol!
It's a well-established fact that women do not benefit from statins. It is also stupid to blame LDL when the studies found themselves that HDL is a 4 times better indicator. Stop looking at the "bad" and look at the "good." And to say that lipids are the only risk factor, has no one heard of fibrinogen? c-reactive protein? blood sugar?
The only demographic which benefits at all from statins are men with CHD... For any other demographic it's at best superfluous.

I don't know much about anything but I can tell you of my experience with lipitor. I took it for a few months and lost about 10lbs. I don't want to lose weight. I stopped taken it and the 10lbs. came back. My doctor said it wasn't because of the lipitor so i started taken it again and BAM! I lost the weight again. I'm convinced that lipitor causes unwanted weight loss. Doctors disagree but the scale has a good argument. I don't like lipitor.
I already have had some liver problems (fatty liver disease) & could not take something like Lipitor which has liver side effects. Sterolyn has done a wonderful job at lowering my LDL (down to 140 from 220 already!) without causing liver damage.
I really don't think that 2% number is right. I did not connect the memory problems with Lipitor until I saw a ad on TV from a lawyer that mentioned that was one of the side effects. You hide that little secrete from everybody out of fear of what will happen to you if your family, co workers or boss find out, so you can bet, there are lots more out there that are afraid to mention it.
I feel like I have been denied the right to make an informed decision as to rather the benifits outweighed the risk (for ME) in taking this drug. That choice was mine and mine alone to make! I can NOT get back the time that Lipitor stole from me, it is gone forever. Only 2 weeks into it the problems started and I would have gotten off of it then if these side effects had been fully disclosed. But that decision was made for me by someoine who don't care about the people they are suppose to help!
This memory loss in ONLY(?) 2%.. what if that person is a airline pilot? a tow boat pilot? a truck driver carrying hazzardous chemicles? A school bus driver? These are serious incidents waiting to happen and I am sure they will. The confusion, the fog in the brain that you live in, the inability to connect all the dots as to what you are doing and how to do it.... in a car, a truck, a airplane. I had to give up driving, was running red lights, stop signs while LOOKING at them.
It's called hysteria
