The theme was not originally intended for Simple Minds, then, a group little known outside the UK. Nonetheless, he always thought of a band or a British solo to interpret it.
Keith Forsey asked Cy Curnin of The Fixx, Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol to record the song, but all three refused, without displaying the potential of the subject; Idol later regret and would perform a version of the piece in 2001 that appeared on her greatest hits collection
This song was originally written for billy idol, although he rejected it, and simple minds played it. billy idol then made his cover, which became quite popular.
i thought this was the best version of the song. I keep trying to listen to Simple Minds' version but just cant. i mean, i like it and all, but when i listen to simple minds i keep thinking of the billy idol version in my head
@GilstrapStudiosAlt same here. i get the same feeling whern i watch the breakfast club. how much cooler would that movie have been with this version on the sound track?
The simple minds one never made me cry. I think about my Friend who was killed on Friday by a hit and run driver who's been bailed out and due to go back in october. He was an innocent kid and he was a mate. His family are traumatised. I think about him and his family when I listen to this song and I can't help but cry my eyes out.
@HalanDinh u don't know what ur talking about.."Recording history
Forsey asked Cy Curnin from The Fixx, Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol to record the song, but all three declined; Idol would later perform a cover of it on his 2001 greatest hits compilation. Schiff then suggested Forsey ask the Scottish New Wave band Simple Minds,
Gosh, i like this song just as much as the original. Billy adds a special slickness to it, with his voice and juices it up....or maybe i'm just hungry ^_^
@MsDarqfyre interesting thing about that is that Simple Minds didn't even want to do the song. and then they kind of just forgot about it until Breakfast Club got huge.
I remember that I in the last year download to my Ipod this music. But the version was different. Please, if someone of you guys, know what i'm talking, pass me the other version or give me the link where I can find the original version. It seems that version in this video is current.
Billy Idol does a wonderful job. Been interesting if he had not turned song down, but I do agree he might not have been able to take it to number 1! I am so glad that he came back to it years later! I like him doing it better than simple minds, although I understand alot of people would not! Rock on though, I love it!
@juke52 this was originally for brian ferry (roxy music) but he turned it down. It took months for kieth forsey to get simple minds to do this track. Jim don't like it but it's a crowd pleaser for most MINDS fans
This song was originally written for him......but it didnt make the cut during that time....until Simple Minds gave it a go....and eventually made it No.1.....Billie must've been gutted!
goddamn man if only i could tell this guy what this song does for me man. well if you know him or know someone who does tell them to tell him ramon says thanks a lot man. you make life life.
I love the music of Billy Idol, and this cover is interesting, but he is right @beawheel, the original version of Simple Minds will remain by far better.
@87GetBig87 Wrong. Forsey asked Cy Curnin from The Fixx, Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol to record the song, but all three declined, Idol would later perform a cover of it on his 2001 greatest hits compilation.
if you listen to the simple minds version, somes parts sound like billy idol, interesting enough this song was originally offered to Billy Idol but he declined it..now he coverd it
Great song - I imagine he wasn't too happy after he turned it down and it went on to become the worldwide smash it did. Written by his producer as well!
@marine7977 This is not a cover: in a recent book, John Hughes loved listening to Simple Minds but did not want Billy Idol to perform it. Idol did not want the song, and Jim Kerr of Simple Minds did not want the song either! But he would perform it if he could add "Hey! Hey! Hey!" to it. So all three agreed.
Notes: John Waite rejected Open Arms. Bryan Adams gave Straight from the Heart to Bonnie Tyler before he recorded it. David Bowie did his version of China Girl.
