Cain requires airpcap to work... i tried to get this recently but it was not for free. In linux you can capture packets of wifi networks without airpcap. I want to know if cain could work in inside a virtual machine in a linux host, to capture the traffic of the lan in which it is connected.

Ya, my Antivirus was blocking, you go to ur AV's quarantine folder, and look for Cain.exe and right click and just like return it to ur desktop

Soo... Basicly he posts a tut, hoping to help you guys out. And instead of thanking him or leaving a decent comment, you bash him. That's why noobs or so frowned upon. Whatever, ignore their comments, it gets them nowhere. Obviously they didn't understand it or they'd be thanking you.

Anyway, Good tut. Could have gone into a little deeper though in regards to setting the sniffer up. You kinda just jumped into it. But it helped me out alot. Thanks and keep up the good work.

I have to agree with you PsychoticRat, at least this guy went out of his way to help us out with the program. I also have to agree that he could've showed how to set it up. I tried numerous times to download 'Cain and Able', but everytime I try opening the program, it says browsing for 'Cain and Able', if you anyone knows how to get it successfully, please send me a personal message and help explain it to me, thank you and thank you for the tutorial.

the file IS NOT a trojan or virus, your virus scanner is set to false trigger on programs like this....download a CD crack for any video game, your virus scanner will false Trigger too!

Theres TONS of progs that will set off scanners that actually ARENT harmful.

This program works for VISTA.

It's NOT malicious, it can be used to recover passwords on your own network like I need it for!

Also can use it to hack into WEP networks...which basically have ZERO security anyways....

I am just interested in capturing user names/passwords that people use on my computer.

When I use the sniffer feature and then log into a site like Hotmail, the sniffer records an encrypted username and a password that says v=1.8.

How do I set up cain & abel to just display the cracked versions of the passwords it records?

I am basically interested in using this software as a password/url logger.

a keylogger would overall better for monitoring information... it would write to file in realtime so even if it crashed- all info up to the crash would be saved... skimming thru the keystrokes would be the only down side but hey...ctrl+f and youll find the 'sections/kind of entries' ur looking for in no time... and a keylogger would run in processes and boot up on startup hidden

OK I understand how to get the data with the sniffer. Unfortunately the passwords it retrieves don't resemble the password I enter. They look like random letters and numbers.

I think you could use it without a wirless router but I am unsure. Try selecting the lan cord connected to your computer.

I've set it all up like you've said (Sniffer and APR) and I'm actually seeing some decent results the only problem is for things like Facebook and Myspace I only get numbers for passwords, like 1 or 16, when I know in fact those are not the passwords.

The only site that actually gives me the real password is Youtube. Any suggestions?

just download the program for windowsxp,2000,ME or that kinda shit and if you have it full installed: right click on the program on your desktop and select run as administrator

now it has to work

You can hide Cain & Abel easier if you push alt+delete and then push alt+page up to make it reappear.

i have a question....im using my ipod to sniff all the packets, and when i try to open the file from my ipod, with cain, it says the file was processed, and on another tut it sed to go to sniffer->passwords, but the info doesnt show up anywhere in cain, ive put it into many different formats and tried, and ive put it through wireshark and tried, do u kno how to get the passwords and all that from the file?

Loving Cain and Abel on my first day with it. Pretty fun to see your password there :D It does seem antivir hates this, but I just disable guard while running it and it's ok. No viruses in this puppy. I also git some random stuff in the password field, with stuff from google looking similar to -f-n/bf-i/ and it goes on for a few more /'s. Won't post the whole thing in case it is a weird encryption system. Any thoughts on what this is?

ok, this File/ Exe Is "NOT" a virus it is just if u are using widows defender or some Norton versons, it is an UnWanted Softvare and that is because some antiVirus programs takes Cracks as UnWanted.
