Yes, I remember this. I was eight years old in '84 and was freaked out by clips of it I saw on TV. Now that I'm grown up I can see both sides of the argument. On one hand it's just a movie. Can't really blame the producers for trying to cash in on such a novel idea. But on the other hand, come on, they should've known they were asking for trouble by making a movie about a psycho killer Santa. And that was in 1984, if someone tried that today...! Just my humble opinion.
THey managed to get a shitload of publicity, so they clearly made the right choice. Most horror fans think it'sa brilliant movie as well, myself definitely being one of them.
I think it's dumb that parents hated it because their little kids were afraid by it. KID'S AREN'T EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE WATCHING THOSE TYPES OF MOVIES!!!
So Siskel and Ebert were "horrified" by it? .. . well, it IS, after all, a HORROR film, .. so THAT is the WHOLE FUCKIN IDEA of it!!! And a killer Santa was a pretty novel idea at the time too! Though I do kinde of understand why parents didn't want their small children exposed to it ( I mean it really COULD mess up THEIR christmas if you think about it ) .
i agree about I Spit on Your Grave being completely terrible and outragious, but I found Silent Night Deadly Night to be harmless. Not scary or shocking but not repulsive like I Spit on Your Grave.
@Panorama1981 There wouldn't be these sickie blockbusters of today like Ireversable, Saw and Devils Rejects if not for flicks like I Spit On Your Grave 30 years ago !
Barmak has a point. I'm sure Siskel and Ebert were at least intelligent enough to know that reviewing the movie would only draw more attention to it. They did it for ratings.
If they found it genuinely offensive they could've avoided adding fuel to fire. It's not like it was some big potential blockbuster, It was a low-budget exploitation movie that briefly played a few hundred screens. They ignore other films of that caliber all the time.
ABout a boy who witnesses his father being shot and his mother being stabbed to death by a maniac in a Santa Claus suit.So now the traumatized kid grows up and has to work in a toy store as Santa one Christmas and it freaks him out, he impales one naked girl on a set of antlers, there's another woman with a bow and arrow, another with a knife, and yet, we see Santa give one little girl a bloody knife for a gift, and threaten another little girl with physical punishment as she sits on his lap.
"I find it so 'amazing' that if you say, "A guy gets into a Santa Claus suit and he has driven over the line." that people on the face of it don't see why that's funny."
I do recall well, Roger Ebert went on record with I Spit on Your Grave as his choice for the worst film of all time, what Earl Root would deem "Having no redeemable Social Value" Whatsoever, however, it's Horror, if you want Politically Correct or Polite, you're barking up the wrong tree!!!
Ebert to Siskel on Siskel Ebert Review Silent Night Deadly Night: "I am 'glad' you mentioned those people's names because, quite frequently, they think, "Gee, we'll make this exploitation film and we'll br able to buy our mercades and live in Bell Air and no one will ever know what we did." But Iwould like to hear them explain to their children and their 'grand'children that it's only a 'movie.'
I think that would be a 'real 'interesting' explaination."
The producer does make a good point. The whole idea of the movie is completely silly and laughable. Now I will admit the opening scene of the killing of the parents is pretty intense. And the beatings in the orphanage are disturbing as well.
@fnm4evr Because its Sci-fi and doesn't even resemble reality and it doesnt take a children's hero and pervert it. I don't agree with the protesting, but I understand it....
@thisislaser He's made excuses for himself, Gene & Roger told the truth, like about the Milwalkee group on Siskel Ebert Review Silent Night Deadly Night
ira richard is the man he just handled siskel and ebert and he is totally right thats great the movie is great people were wasting there time getting mad over a slasher movie it was only gonna bring more attention to the movie by acting like a bunch of morons.
Not review it on their show?!?! Look, Mr. Barmak, it is a movie, Ebert & Siskel reviewed movies, and they can review WHATEVER movies they want to. Don't tell them how to do their jobs. However, the movie looks interesting.
Saayyy, I'd like to see more of Mary in the last frame of the video.

Or, you know, they could just not take their kids to see the movie.
Seriously, anyone who protests a MOVIE because they disagree with the content of it, which is ALL FAKE AND FICTIONAL, is a fucking dipshit.

If they wouldnt have reviewed it and not stirred up controversy more than likely this movie would have been forgotten about.
